the cooler is much needed in summer. Phones can get quite hot even when they are only sitting on the desk charging. Most of the world don't turn AC as low as North Americans do.
I mean, cooling is always necessary, but there's only so much you can do when it's going through a pane of glass. If the peltier device drops the surface temperature a lot, and I do mean a lot, the temperature delta between the outside and inside should be able to make a difference if its able to maintain it.
Please more benchmarks on emulation. Dolphin, Citra, AetherSX2, Skyline. All great apps that really challenge this devices. Also clarify resolution and configs. Or specify everything on stock. Makes huge differences.
fun fact newegg doent only sell electronics they also have workout equipment. No i'm not trolling they legit have a section of the sight for workout equipment
Well... that's kinda what I expected. There's only so much cooling you can do to a device that is also being designed to be weather-resistant. Phones and handheld cameras are just the worst for cooling. They have to be built like a thermos just to avoid dying from a light rain or roasting the hands and leg meat of the user. Phonemakers are gonna have to really think out of the box if they want the "gaming phone" to be more than just a marketing stunt. Maybe a copper heatplate with a gasket covering it would do the trick, but I doubt it'll pass the durability test. Another idea might be to insert a "cooling unit" attached to a copper rod that you kinda... stab through a small hole in the device. Anything to actually wick the heat out of the case rather than _through_ the case material itself.
What a shame there's no SD Card slot, considering how it's for GAMERS, who'll probably have a bunch of screenshots and other recorded content, extra storage would've been nice.
not only that, but having an SD card allows you to offload temp storage, app storage, etc so your faster internal storage stays free which over time can help reduce "age lag" that some android phones can get when their storage approaches 90% full.
I know that this is a Short Circuit video, but I don't think it has any business being 17mins long if it can't even touch on features that the cooler adds to the phone
I mean, MicroSD is not really usable on Android these days. Because of Google's DRM-driven measures, it can only do photos, SOME video (4K60 and 8K are made to default to the internal storage because of low sequential R/W speeds), and downloads of spicy content and torrented (pirated) media. You can't run ANY games off it unlike the Steam Deck.
@@odeiraoloap Still nice to have so you can offload the less important things/stuff that will still work on the sd card to the sd card, which frees up internal storage space for the things that need it.

I have, from experience, come to find that the most times that I drop a phone by accident, it always lands on a corner, nowhere else. The phone I currently have took me a year of dropping it an untold amount of times by accident with a cover that only protects the entire back, sides, and edges sticking a couple - if even that much - mm above the screen, before my screen finally ended up getting a small scrape on it. Granted, I don't know anything about that particular case, and the one I have is - if I remember right - designed to absorb some - or a lot - of the kinetic force upon impact, so it might not be a fair comparison. But my phone still largely only ever landed on the edges or corners before it dropped onto either the back or front, and the few times that it landed on the front - and minus that one time - it also was protected enough to not damage the screen.
The Samsung S24 leaks show the GPU will the 50% faster than it already is. I think next year we are going to see some insane performance gains over the already great 8 gen 2.
why would you need a bigger resolution than 1080p on 6,7" screen? Even 2k resolution is in diminishing returns on that size. It's waste of performance and battery. LTT pls have some common sense.
I'm on 2 years old ROG phone 5 and it's still going strong. One of the more useful features is the charging limit that can be set to 80 or 90%. But it has a potentially fatal flaw which may have been deliberately engineered into it: it can easily deform in the middle. Also, damn, that inflation in price is wild.

Because putting a phone on the market (as in actively selling it in stores/online) and then have people who bought it new, buying what's essentially a 1-year-phone, isn't OK.

As someone who has a very young daughter who often stole my phone to watch her youtube vids while I sleep, the very thin casing ROG Phones offer still offer protection. It has prevented screen cracks, glass cracks, and bends on the aluminum frame numerous times. So no, saying the case is too thing to offer any sort of protection is incorrect. It may not offer the protection that a heavy duty, full case offers, but it still protects from otherwise unfortunate falls that would've otherwise bent the frames or cracked the glass aspects of the phone.

I'd be interested to see if the cooler makes an active difference if you were to stick this in the temperature control box or whatever its called. Really crank the heat up and then see if the cooler makes a difference because I doubt those temps you got could actually get any lower.
This,👆🏽
It kinda feels like the addition of labs is ironically resulting in less content about the testing process... which is a little unfortunate. Hope this gets a little better over time.
100% agreed. They did close to no testing about the cooler...
Like as a junior engineer, I have so many questions and so many possible tests....
Not to mention that the lab testing isn’t even that good or informative.
The purpose of the cooler is to maintain the soc peak performance, not to give a higher peak performance
Ikr...super lame review
@@aditya_gupta LMG is going to shit.
Pretty unfortunate they only did a 20 minute benchmark...
Labs needs to disclose methodology... What is the "Longevity test" ? Leaving the phone with the screen off ? Music ? Video ? Standby ?
The red magic 8 pro really nailed a better looking "gaming phone " design imo. Looks better than all the other ones
Redmagic 8 pro is so much better. Less bezels, built in fan with all the same bells and whistles while being half the price
@@supaboi9 Will it give software updates as long as Asus?
@@supaboi9 I actually prefer the bezels on the ROG Phone 7 because of the built-in stereo speakers and they make the phone better to hold in landscape mode. Plus the bezels aren't even that big nor distracting.

Some endurance/thermal throttling test would be nice for products like phones and laptops. Sometimes due to overheating FPS drops and games start to lag or jitter.

He did talk about their labs doing tests and that there should be a video about that coming out
@@InfernosReaper yeah but how he talked about it here was awful, great it has the same frame rate and score but he didn't go over the temps at all, all he proved was that the phone operates at max performance regardless and not any wearing it might have or etc
@@landmine36 yeah, that's a good point. probably shouldn't split the info on a product like this into multiple videos
@@InfernosReaper yeah especially when their other testing methodology was flawed too.
They took games where the game has a hard frame rate cap of just 60fps that was mostly achievable since the ROG5 and said there's no difference in performance beyond margin of error they didn't even compare to other phones of the price range or chipsets.
Where's the load time comparisons, where's the multi tasking comparison, frame rate impact when using the built in screen recording software.
Where's the differences in performance based on phone modes
was this video done in Ultra Durable batter mode, or Balanced where performance of the device is hard capped, or was it in X-Mode where the device is allowed to go a bit harder or X-Mode+ where the Aero Cooler is required for use, Rog Phones have 4 and 5 Modes 1 of which is locked behind the cooler being used.
I get that we might get most of that from a Labs video, but the fact nothing of any importance was gone over meant this video was a whole bunch of nothing other than we got the phone and labs tested it somehow.
I don't know if I missed it in another video or something, but I'd like to see it compared to other phones playing games, like a samsung ultra or Iphone pro
the back isnt plastic, its glass for both the regular and ultimate
its matte glass on the ultimate and nice n grippy, thats prob why you thought its plastic
If you don't like the look of the interface, use a launcher. Have people forgotten launchers exist? Also, AMOLED screens don't inherently feature punchy, saturated colours. They can be used in sRGB if the software permits it and that should be the default or at least an option
Launchers exist but they have always not been worth it. Another point for a security leak, uses more battery power by overlaying a whole ui over the default one.
@@sategllib2191 launcher doesn't use more battery though? At least nova doesn't, as there's no overlaying involved with launchers
@@sategllib2191 They don't overlay over the regular UI, they replace it. It's always been this way and the launcher does not need to have any permissions that would impact security any more than any other app. You don't seem to know much about them
@@cfilorvyls457 In my experience (have used it for probably 8 years now) it even saves battery compared to some default launchers, especially in the past when heavily themed UIs were the norm (looking at you Samsung)
Yes and no. While launchers are more approachable than ever, and you and I probably love them, a lot if not most general users either can't be asked to dabble in or haven't ever thought of 3rd party launchers like Nova. Hell, one of Apple's main selling points is just how idiot-proof/smooth the experience is out of the box. Even if it's a gaming phone we generally have to assume the user is the lowest common denominator: ie someone who's ignorant of things like launchers and doesn't care to learn.
I wish they'd implement interesting designs like this in regular phones. I'm not interested in mobile gaming, but I'd love to a have a phone that isn't a minimalist monochrome slab with a camera bump.
so why don't you buy this one? it has great battery life, no hole in screen, great sound and 3.5 jack. I'm thinking to buy one just because it's a good phone
Buy a gaming phone? I use my gaming phone for both gaming and also normal use. One time i went outwide my house for 2 days and this phone was still on 60% since its battery is really good and also i am a multiplatform gamer and yea
I love the short circuit reviews, but I wouldn't mind them being a bit longer to be more accurate 😊. There are a few other reviewers who have much lower temperatures and more stable frame rates/frame times. Also a few of the specs are inaccurate. Very enjoyable review though keep it up
"I love the short circuit reviews, but I wouldn't mind them being a bit longer to be more accurate"
They're as short as they are, because they're explicitly not reviews. =)
I agree... It felt rushed... Would've liked to see their inputs on the improved sound with the cooling accesory
It's crazy to see how just a little work from labs took this from unboxing and impressions to competitive with reviews.
They will never put more effort than this. As you know that's what the channel is for.
well is because they aren't reviews, they're first impressions/unboxing videos
Thank you for this comparison! I was tied which one to choose, you answered my questions.
Aerocooler is good accessory because of back buttons, and it prevents throttling. I bought the upgrade AC for my RP5 and I love it.

i need this man to tell me "you're doing good" on a daily basis, man i love his voice
He is such a good persona in front of camera. Super plus point he has a "radio voice" too man...
the cooler is much needed in summer.

Well... that's kinda what I expected.
You did not show that the "stand" also doubles as a controller for the phone. (Or did I miss-remember that from another unboxing video?)
I feel like 99% of people would rather have an sdcard than 2 sims.
93 degrees Freedom is ~34'C. It's barely warm.
@@tim3172 they did convert correctly though...
I know that this is a Short Circuit video, but I don't think it has any business being 17mins long if it can't even touch on features that the cooler adds to the phone
I could actually use a macro camera multiple times a week for work stuff.
The cooler would be good to test with extended gaming for throttling.
Really cool phone tbh, but I need MicroSD expansion to toss on a ton of ROMs to making a gaming phone worth it :\
Yep. I need a headphone jack and a MicroSD. I hate how companies keep removing them.
I'm going to throw the ASUS ROG phone into my next "select a new phone to buy" round up just for the fact that they've kept the headphone jack. I sorely miss mine and have spent at least $80 on dongles and adapters to charge and use wired headphones/car stereo at the same time. None of them worked so far. I don't have a smart car stereo with Android Auto/Apple Carplay, so don't @me about that shit. I just want to use a fucking headphone jack!

no sd card slot makes zero sense on an android phone in 2023.. especially if it's gamer focused, as i'm sure many of the customers of this type of "gamer" focused phone load their SD cards with games, etc.
with that much storage is not like you will end short

For all their upgrading, labs etc, LMG's channels are really going down hill quality wise lately. It's turning into the buzzfeed of tech.
The Aero Active Cooler reminds me of the HandyPak™ Color for Game Boy® Color by InterAct, which was the pinnacle of mobile gaming accessories back in 2000.
For macro cameras, I would like to see a circuit board used to take photos of components to get details unreadable by a pair of 20-20 vision eyes. I adore my OnePlus 7T Pro for the ability to read model numbers of different IC's, transistors, resistors etc.
"Genshin doesn't allow for more than 60 FPS" Actually it does, but only for iPhones.
Also they lock Controller support to iPhones. Android users just keep getting shafted in the weirdest ways.
Come on - Asus announced the pricing of both models on their announcement stream about 2 weeks ago. Evidently you missed that then
so is Newegg not on the sh*t list anymore?
Ironically, I put an old GPU fan on my Kindle, and it definitely cools the processor down!
Some people had motherboard problems, which became apparent after many months, because of this. I don't know if I'd trust ASUS not to engineer a flaw into a phone again.
Also, damn, that inflation in price is wild.
Don't know the details of this phone, but usually when these kinds of devices deform it's because the high internal heat causes battery swelling
@@go-away-5555 no. This one is deformed by bending. Search youtube for the rog phone 5 bend test. It fails and cracks. Mine and the others bend at the same place.

I’m so done with LMG straight up lying with these titles.
Yeah Linus has talked about the algorithm and having to do thumbnails and titles that reflect that, but when the title flat out lies about the content of the video then you’ve hit a threshold about your credibility that is damaging to your brand. Very disappointed in LMG.
Great review though and content of the video is solid. Keep up the good work Bell and the production crew.
9:39 IMO, they should switch those around. 4 (preferably, at least 5) years of OS updates and (then I'd be more willing to accept) 2 years of security updates.
And IMO, that should probably include some 'X' amount of those years should start ticking when the company stops selling them. Because putting a phone on the market (as in actively selling it in stores/online) and then have people who bought it new, buying what's essentially a 1-year-phone, isn't OK.
9:39 "What is nice it does come with two years of OS updates and four years of security updates"
You call that nice, I call that BS. A Highend smartphone could definitely handle more OS updates just fine and after 4 years your supposed to throw it away, or just live with a potential vulnerability?
I'm aware almost all Brands do the same but still, I wouldn't call that nice...

In every video we see casual mistakes and regular misinformation about products that are being reviewed.
Linus, if you're trying to get a lab and videos that people trust them why are you always making videos that have basic errors and lots of misinformation?
If I'm ever learning about a product I'm thinking of buying then I never rely on your videos because they are consistently inaccurate.
Are they ever going to be accurate?
As someone who has a very young daughter who often stole my phone to watch her youtube vids while I sleep, the very thin casing ROG Phones offer still offer protection. It has prevented screen cracks, glass cracks, and bends on the aluminum frame numerous times.
So no, saying the case is too thing to offer any sort of protection is incorrect. It may not offer the protection that a heavy duty, full case offers, but it still protects from otherwise unfortunate falls that would've otherwise bent the frames or cracked the glass aspects of the phone.
