    Don't take this video too literal. I'm NOT showing you gear here, I'm showing you an idea and mindset. I've been doing photography professionally for 15 years (now also videography) and I've NEVER owned a Sony G-Master or Canon L lens... I always go for budget options. And yet, my work has been published and I've won awards for projects shot on old used manual focus lenses I bought on E-bay. And right now, 90% of the time I'm using just one camera, one lens and a mic. Some people even make a living from making videos with their smartphone! Now, of course, some extra gear will help you once you go pro and it will inspire you but it won't make you magically succeed all of a sudden. Anyway, you got this. 👊🏻🔥

      I agree with you. The only thing is that I think that my Canon M50 is a bit limited for lowlight video. I did my first wedding a couple of weeks ago and I’m starting to see the limitations of a budget camera. I love it in every other situation though, and I don’t want to get rid of it or upgrade, but I feel forced to! Any suggestions or thoughts?

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're absolutely right about the M50 and low light! So, if low light is important and it seems like it is I'm afraid you'll have to get something else 🤔

    • @youtubecharlie1
      @youtubecharlie1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JorisHermans what would be a good option, then? What’s the next camera to purchase? - something affordable but good in lowlight.

      Initially I thought’NOT ANOTHER GEAR VIDEO” and though it is, you still capture the essence or point of the basics, which for almost everyone is all they will ever need. There is this constant stream of new this or that and yet a camera probably 5 years old will meet your needs and then some. Most people should watch an hour worth of gear videos (or less) for every 10 hours they watch on technique. In a way it reminds me of a cyclist friend who was so excited because he paid a fortune for a new bike 5 lbs lighter than his old one (he is just a recreation cyclist who was slightly overweight at the time) and I suggested it would have been far more productive if he simply dropped 5 lbs; would have likely been faster and certainly healthier. Too much gear focus, too little time spent on ‘doing’. End of my rant…and I’m a bit of gear-head so always need to remind myself too! Enjoyed this btw!

    Thanks for the valuable essentials, a lot of folks have GAS and think they need the most expensive and greatest, you make it realistic for most case uses. Also, love seeing the growth. Keep rocking !

    I switched from tamron to Sony - big difference. I think camera conspiracies is right - 3rd party lens are horrible with stabilisation and focus.

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're not horrible, Sony's Active stabilization is just not supported with 3rd party lenses 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I got the 17-28, and have loved it, but i never vlog so i feel the 20-40 would be better. 20 is great for sit down filming and if ur on a7IV you can hit 60mm with apsc mode😊. I have the 35-150 now and almost never take it off, but sometimes i need a wider shot for a group in a tight space. And it is heavy...

    Hi Joris, i tried using a VND once, and i was put off from using it again. Whilst using the VND, i had to take off the lens hood (as it didnt fit with a hood), and as a result i was getting massive amounts of lens flare to the point that my whole shot was blown out. I noticed most film makers who use ND/VND's dont have a lens hood on. What's your recommendations to get better with using VND as a beginner?

    • @JorisHermans
      @JorisHermans  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used a lens hood so not sure how you get massive amounts of lens flare. Bad lens? 🤔

    hello my friend! thanks for the content. Here's some feedback from my perspective for you about your video. You might want to keep little bit shorter on the intro part and use different angles at least two for your videos to keep audience engaged. Still it's a thumbs up video for me !!

    Joris, sage advice. I did go semi-costly with a Sony a7IV hybrid but learned from an earlier experience with expensive Nikon glass that Tamron is very, very good too. And with their partnership with Sony, Tamron's AF is excellent on my Sony camera. Second your opinion on their 17-28mm f/2.8, fantastic for videography indoor & outdoor. Your other points all hit home as well! 💥💥 BTW, after watching your "Is an UltraWide Monitor Worth it? [ft. BenQ PD3420Q]" video, I used your link to purchase the monitor- hope you get commission from it. Opened up a new world in DaVinci Resolve editing, for sure❗😊

    • @JorisHermans

      It's OK to go semi-costly or even costly. We all love gear! 😎 Just wanna show beginners it's not needed to start and get somewhere 💪🏻💯 Oh, and great monitor indeed, once you go wide... 😅

  • @bikecommuter24
    @bikecommuter24 ปีที่แล้ว

    Camera body and lens everything else is an accessory.
    Since I stopped or retired from doing photography and writing I got a very minimal kit, one body, one lens, two filters, a microphone, a lume cube for light and I have a smart phone clamp and extendable pole for my smart phone if I need another camera or want to get a different perspective.
    I still got my old tripod up in the closet but its about ten years old and there are better and lighter options, truthfully my Sony a6600 has pretty good stabilization and I can always finds a wall or post or something to use for support LOL I have even used my bicycle for support putting it on the saddle just the perfect height sometimes.
    cheers.
