Today we are unboxing a legend among watch enthusiasts, and one of the most affordable mechanical chronographs on the market, the Chinese Air force Seagull 1963. Created in the 60's as an asnwer to a request of the chinese government to have their own military watch instead of depending on other countries for supplying one, the 1963 chronograph was created using a swiss origin. Venus, one of very few Swiss companies manufacturing chronographs, was developing a new movement and offered their last generation the Venus 175 for sale, with all the blueprints, tooling and know how. They offered it to the Soviets, but they already copied an older Venus design when they made the Strela. So Venus turned to China, who at the time was developing their own chronograph, and they agreed to buy it. They slightly modified it, added a couple more jewels, and the legendari ST19 was born, and with a short stoppage in production, it has been the same as back then.
This variant of the watch is as close to the original as possible, design wise, as it has been upgraded with sapphire and an exebition caseback. However, you can still opt for the acrylic crystal and closed caseback if you want the real vintage experience!

This watch is stunning. The cream dial, golden indexes, blue hands and the chronograph red hand, all together makes an amazing set. There's this issue about official and unofficial watches, but I really don't care. They probably comes from the same factory. I think I'll pull the trigger for one of these soon.

Bought one of these exact watches a couple of months ago, with a soft Rios 1931 leather strap.
The watch was the power reserve of a fly, but it looks amazing and if you are a watch enthusiast, you cannot help falling in love with this piece. It doesn't matter whether it's this 'semi-official' copy or the real deal.

ive had one of these for about 5 years. it runs almost exactly +15 seconds a day. i haven't tried regulating it yet, but its remarkably consistent.
the little blue colored bit in the crown popped out at some point and now its just got a matte finish around the star which looks okay, but not great.
sometimes the chrono hand jumps a bit when you start it, but most of the time it is fine.
i think the "blued" hands look a bit tacky, and i hate the shape of the running seconds hand.
it's a pretty good watch for the money. the nato strap it comes on really sucks.
I bought the original reissue from SeaGull. I really hope this lasts well as it would be very expensive to maintain. Waiting for your review!
Can I ask you which official Seagull website you bought yours from? I found two that claim to be official but I don't know which is the real one haha

Ive had a few of them, they’re fragile. (The movement in particular) zero shock protection so If you drop it it’s game over. Be careful with it, don’t overwind it and fingers crossed you should be ok

The so called fakes were actually first before seagull realized the potential and started making their own official version . so if you want to pay three times the price for the same watch go ahead.

This movment is obsolete. It's not even 3htz - 21/2 for God's sake. The Swiss sold off the machinery when they upgraded it. Good luck with the service cost!
I think the point is that it's beautiful, has history, and you can buy another one for less than it costs to service a "new" non obsolete movement.
This is about the closest to an actually vintage watch you can buy new in 2023. Thus, it is very desirable to more than a few watch enthusiasts.
All mechanical movements are obsolete....and yet we buy them.

Is it true that after using this watch for sometime you'd have to throw it away because the servicing cost is too high it would be more affordable to just buy a new one? This watch is very beautiful and It would hurt me to have to throw it away if it stopped working after sometime.
