They lived! For anyone interested, one of the people in the kayak is a wildlife filmmaker, and he's writing a book about this experience and how it inspired him to learn about animal communication. it's called How to Speak Whale and comes out this summer.
+Paul Frech People seem to not understand humor these days. Puns are my favorite form. People in the internet keep missing them and trying to correct people in their ignorance. It ruins the mood of the joke.
+Roger Smith Never mind. You have nothing to do so close to the wales. Please a little bit of respect for Nature. Claiming you are doing it for science is not true, it's only business and the main goal is making money ! You should share with the wales.
+Jordan Link yup, all I could think was they're going to need help do something. Minimum they're capsized in the ocean, worst case they could be paralyzed face down or dead omg. Luckily they seemed safe and smiling there in the end photos.
+Onyx53GamingVideos - The kayakers should not have been that close to the whales. So yes, I too would put the whales well being over the kayakers who got too close.
***** I get what your saying but they wasn't really disturbing the whale or anything. The whale could easily swim 10 times faster than the kayakers away if it wanted too, but it chose to attack for no reason. And saying ''I hope the whale was okey'' is just stupid The kayakers could die from breaking their neck.
+Onyx53GamingVideos not a troll at all, this is classic people. People are inherently dumb, and this is what happens when we act inherently dumb.. This is equivalent to tourists in the WOODS taking pictures of a bear, and then getting attacked by said bear, and then having to put said bear down over people just being dumb. Just heard the filmmaker who was in the kayak being interviewed. The video was later analysed by an animal movement expert and they concluded that this was wholly accidental and in fact the whale saw them as it breached and twisted aside as it fell to avoid landing right on top of them.
+Philip Butterworth I'm more worried about the sake of the whale. How many times have people sought vengeance after animals just being animals? People have no business thinking they're safe around animals in general.
+kate summers People who kayak with the whales run the risk of getting crushed by the whales. Why are you worried about them when they place themselves in harm's way, unlike the whale?
I love how some people are cheering, laughing, and clapping even.... Great way to respond to 2 people almost biting the dust... Some people just have no sense at all. This feels something akin to bystander effect. For one thing, its just kinda stupid to Kayak purposely by whales coming up for air. The reaction of these people confirms the stupid part of the crowd. To the woman who realized 2 people in danger, you are one of few people there with any sense, hats off to her.
Someone mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but one of the people in the kayak wrote a book about whales which starts off with this story. By the sounds of it they weren't intentionally trying to kayak in so close to the whales, the whales came to them, and kayaks can't outpace a whale when it comes to giving the whales space
What's amazing is the fact that after the huge whale 'landed' on those two poor souls, the people watching were laughing and clapping and i think i even heard a 'wow'....they just treated it like some joke instead of realizing that two people could be seriously hurt or even dead...the whale must have weighed in at a minimum of a few tonnes
30 tons. it weighed 30 tons. the whale only saw the people in the kayak after it breached. it then changed its direction so it wouldn't land on them directly. it didn't mean any harm. they were very lucky!
"I got him on video..." would have been my SECOND response, right after "Oh shit, I hope they're O.K." being my first! And I certainly wouldn't have had a jovial tone in my voice, at least not until I had an idea of how the kayakers were. Shallow, callow people indeed.
Oh my, those kayakers are living my nightmare, imagine something as huge as a whale popping out of nowhere and knocking you down leaving you just floating there not knowing what's beneath you.
I’m reading the book of the kayaker in the video, his name is Tom Mustill. It’s interesting seeing his view on what happened compared with what others saw. The books called ‘How to speak whale’
I know, this is unbelievably but the same thing happend to me yesterday (Oktober 6th) at the same place in Monterey bay. We saw a larger group from far away. No whales have been in our surroundings. Then, without any early warning, a full-size humpback whale jumped nearly compleate out of the water and landed right beside my boat. It was as close as here in this video. I also knocked off my kayak. The splash of 40t pushed me and my kayak under the water. How can this happen again after 4 weeks?
From the view of the video it would seem like the kayakers got crush by the whale, but slow down and just the slpash that knock the kayak over. Lucky indeed.
+kwambam1 Im pissed off about what humans are doing to our environment "oceans" and I don't even live in the oceans. I cant imagine how pissed off they are!
Why are the people watching (including apparently the cameraman) so pleased that the two kayakers almost died? Is this something people go whale-watching hoping to view?
John: "Hey, did you hear about Bob?" Jack: "Aw, what happened now?" John: "Yeah, he's dead-funeral's this week". Jack: "I'm so sorry to hear that. He lived a hard life...took his leg in Iraq, lost his job from the pills". John: "His wife just filed for divorce, what a shame eh?" Jack: "My heart really goes out to his family; the drinking must've finally did him in huh?" John: "Um no...a whale landed on him."
Yeah they almost die but you and the other people where more amaze about it rather than be worried or show some concern and some are even clapping like it was the most amazing thing they ever saw.
People should NOT be allowed to kayake near whales. What are they thinking? If that whale landed on them they would definitely not be laughing and smiling.

I was out of Yaquina Bay and had one come up under our 12' boat. It rose slowly, straight up until you could reach over and touch the barnacles on it's back from either side of the boat. Then it just slowly dropped straight down out of sight. AMAZING
Wow.This whale tour came with an added bonus. Explain please why you use something as small as a kayak instead of something bigger? In the end, I guess it really doesn't matter. Interesting vid.
Breaching is a way for a whale to show its power, size, health, and happiness. This whale that breached on these kayakers wasn't doing it intentionally. They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But notice how the whale spins during its breach, which is unusual. This whale noticed the kayakers in its path before coming down, so it turned to avoid a direct collision, which if it occurred, could have killed them. The skull of the whale and the top part of its mouth is one solid bone. Being struck by this portion of the whales head can been fatal!
I saw what you saw. The whale corrected away from the kayak mid breach. Consequently did not 'stick the landing'. That's a 4/10 from the female humpback judges. I noticed mid breach, the whale's eyes seem to briefly protrude. Is that possible?
@@jamieb4687 I didn't notice any protrusion of the eyeballs. Might have been barnacles. Whales can't protrude their eyeballs, but they do have eyelids to protect their eyes from hazards and irritants.
+fenix lily Well its not a good idea to paddle out to where they are at. I was salmon fishing and I could hear an Orca pod coming and I was right in its path. I was a long way away still I should of moved. Even thou the pod was a long way away. Then suddenly a big giant male Orca swam close to my boat and scared me out of my mind it was huge and stared right at me like get the f*** out of the way. The dorsal fin was at least ten feet high and it was massive and its giant eye staring at me. I will never bother those animals ever again and move out of the way long before they arrive. I was taught a valuable lesson by an Orca whale I will never forget.
I wonder did the whale mean to land right beside them or was he pissed that he didn't manage to land on top of them. I wouldn't feel safe so close to creatures that size.
Lol. A pack of security guards. I would imagine that could become quite expensive. It sure would be great to have a cigar holder though. Right now the only cigar holder I have is me but I heard I can pay for one somewhere on Main Street. I don't think it's in my budget though.

For some strange reason these people filming thought the whale "knocked the kayak over", when in truth, it landed on top of the kayak. Given that the guy filming was looking straight at the scene, I'm not sure how he missed what happened. Maybe his eye wasn't looking at the whale.

Yes, it’s out now and reads great! Looks like the whale actually avoided crushing them.
Just finished the book. Great read!
That was one hell of an interesting read. Felt like I was watching a movie.
Thank you, God, they live.
Book is called How To Speak Whale by Mustill.
Sees somebody die in front of him... "Ooh I got it on video [laughs], He knocked it over!"... sounding very pleased.
But he didn't knew...
Sorry bad english, knew is the past tense of know, I thought, still have no clue :/
+KYRboom stanley Damnit man, don't be a grammar nazi

If you take a closer look, it didn't land on them. They were likely flipped by the wave from its landing. Very close though.
+Shane Yellin The boat did sustain bow damage. I was one of two kayakers that paddled in to help T-up and drain the flooded tandem kayak.

Incorrect. Totally landed on it. The Kayak was heavily dented by the blow.
0:34 onwards is actually audio of the whale expressing his joy after getting a sweet shot of some wild Kayakers on his GoPro.

gotta love the reaction of the people in the video. they couldn't care less about the kayakers.
Or the whale. 😞
I've always wanted to see this. This video made my life.
I like how everyone didn’t even care about those people lmfaoo

The slow speed makes it sound like a demon applauding the action.
Looks premeditated: perhaps the whales are getting wise to who is killing the oceans.

Awesome breach! That was a tandem sit inside kayak, that's a lot of force!
Why are the people watching (including apparently the cameraman) so pleased that the two kayakers almost died? Is this something people go whale-watching hoping to view?
+A Pink We were on the radio calling the coast guard as soon as this happened. there was nothing funny about it as far as our crew was concerned.
+A Pink because people are stupid and they needed to die for their stupidly. it is called the Darwin awards.
+A Pink Did you notice that the people that were in the kayak that was hit have smiles on them that couldn't be pried off with a cro-bar?
+Iffy50 exactly! They look very happy!
If I watched someone get run over by a train and they were smiling while it happened I'd still be upset.
First time ever a cameraman got a really good shot on epic moment.

whales can move much faster than kayaks. so instead lets make it a law that whales are not allowed to swim near kayaks.
people should be aloud to do what the fuck they wanna do and suffer the consequences of doing so

+mzk123ify I believe they're birds.
