There are lots of videos about streaming mistakes. They mostly all say the same thing and some of the advice isn't even sound. They never talk about the type of audience that is spending their time on Twitch or how to fully optimize your discoverability. Lemme help, yo. Also, honest question, do you think Emilia Clarke will ever notice me? I don't know how many people actually read this paragraph so help me figure that out by answering that question in the comments. Personally I've had 5min streams because my power cut because of financial hardship, I dont have a donation button and stream for fun, if I ever complain about financial situations it's from a place of exhaustion and I feel comfortable to discuss that with my viewers, i dont believe every streamer is baiting donations when they talk about financial hardship, as he said in the video alot of streamers and viewers dont socialize outside of streaming so if you have a moment where you talk about it then do it and dont judge, its ridiculous i, if I didnt open up about my situation I wouldn't have found out that one of my viewers was going through a rough patch paying a power bill where his power was cut for 3 days at a time, its thinks like this that create relivince bitween streamer and viewer as long as what you said that the streamer isnt useing it to farm there viewer wallets which is dirty asf

I've been looking for something like this and it's honestly not easy to find. I can't thank you enough for the plethora of insight.

I started implementing a "question of the day" on my streams. I'll ask a question related to the game I'm streaming, and then engage my viewers who answer. It takes a bit for people to respond, and some questions go over better than others, but it does help with viewer engagement.

Just started watching your videos and already watched a lot of them today. I totally agree on a lot of things you are saying.
Currently building my own Twitch channel with a specific niche (a soccer manager browsergame in german language) with support of youtube videos.
It is a lot of fun and I am in since January 2020. Recently upgraded my mic and will upgrade my lightning next.
I wanted to thank you so much for the insights, tips and wise words.
One thing I miss in your videos: Building, growing and cultivating a community. It's about communicating directly with viewers through other channels, helping them and giving them support for topics related to the topics or games you stream. For me, it is the key to build up my viewer base. This is of course not maintainable on a bigger scale (you can later produce videos about those things), but it helps a lot to build a stable viewership.

I find it difficult to socialise in groups too.
I find any meaningful conversation is taken over by who can talk the loudest and dominant with physical attributes.
My response is to usually stop talking, and take a back seat. But this is not my natural way of being, so it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Twitch for me levels the playing field, as viewers cant use there physical appearance to dominate the conversation.
The streamer is in charge and that's where I feel most comfortable.

I wanna start making more YT videos, but the thing that scares me away from YT is what is defined as "original". When YT first came out, it was easier to create unique, one-of-a-kind content that people want to see. Nowadays, there's content on YT for 99.99% of things that exist/have existed. Where does discoverability come into play if you're essentially growing two platforms from the ground up? Great video as always Harris!

Tim Conte while yes TH-cam does have many sections covered, getting discovered is all about your personal actions and personality. Great videos and advise. I do need to say that i currently use streaming to work through my Burn-out. I don't have a really regular set schedule, only two days that i'm on for sure, but not set a starting time.. I've been doing it for a month and i've noticed that when i start i sometimes ain't into it, but then some regulars come by and I start to be a bit more alive again. It's a bit meeting up with friends (that ya really don't know..)...
So I don't stream to become populair famous or get rich... but since i started i have thought about how people grow and what kind of mistake someone can make... this video is a good help for them.

I'm really glad you mentioned the mental health thing in point number 4, because Mental Health is something I've been struggling with for years now. And I know I have to give it my all and work incredibly hard, but I oftentimes pushed myself into an even deeper depression. Since you mentioned that, I'll refrain from it and try to differentiate between "I kinda don't want to right now" and "This will hurt me if I do it."

I've been streaming casually on Twitch for roughly 6 years. I was pulled out of work due to a back injury I sustained a while back that's recently gotten much worse. I've decided since I can't work a 9-5 at the moment, I might as well make a go at streaming full-time. This video has given me a few tips I wasn't aware of as well as alerted me to a few mistakes I've been making. Entertain, engage, interact & appreciate. Really great piece with lots of advice. You gained a subscriber and I'll be posting this video in my community's Discord. Thank you!

Completely relate on the social anxiety, a couple friends, I'm good, add a couple more, the dynamic changes a tab bit, add a few more, no thanks, I'd much rather be on the sticks in my gaming lair. The social power struggles, (as you stated) "the battle" to be heard, and the flipping Egos!! No Thanks.. I'd much rather escape to my creative universe, talk life, laugh till it hurts, over the wire, playing whatever it might be that we're playing that session.

Hey, I'm just starting out on Twitch after trying to convince myself that it's still possible to pay a bill with money I make from entertaining people. I've pretty much always wanted to be an actor or something of that nature, but I've been very intimidated by not knowing what to do or where to start. Your videos on mistakes for streaming and giving counter advice have been really helpful in building my confidence that this is a possible thing. I do have a few questions, though:
What exactly is original content? Is it content that no one has done before or is it just content that I make for that specific platform?
If I'm doing one thing for a game on twitch, but I know that isn't very clickable on TH-cam, is it disingenuous to do something else in that same game for TH-cam that I don't do on Twitch yet? For example, I do shiny hunts on Twitch because I can just hang out and chat while I look for Pokemon, but, on TH-cam, I feel like doing content for competitive battles and news coverage would do better for me because most people don't seem to want to just sit around and watch me hunt for a shiny pokemon (and, I'll be honest, it's taken so many hours so far that I couldn't even post it to TH-cam) with the exception of reaction content to finding the thing.
And, finally, I saw in another one of your videos that a picture of myself is better than a logo, but having a logo is also very good, so where should the logo go? Should it be in my Twitch overlay, in my emotes if I ever get there, on my TH-cam page?
If you get a chance to reply to this, I'd appreciate your feedback and, even if you don't, I appreciate all the advice you've put out and counter advice to go with it so I can push myself in positive directions.

I understand you point about not putting up twitch highlights to your TH-cam channels, but one of the reasons i think its valid is that sometimes your audience wasnt able to see you on twitch on a certain day and to have that available for them to watch when they can is a cool idea so that they are still informed.
Edit. Realizing after talking to Amethystkorn, you did say that there are exceptions to the rules and what i was talking about would be the exception to the rules so I see your point more clearer now :)

    • @amethystkorn

Not to be rude but just wanting to point out that Twitch provides that feature IF the streamer has VODs enabled. Why would someone come to TH-cam from Twitch and why waste your own personal time posting something to another platform for something they/you can find on Twitch. That's the point he's making. He did point out that ofc there are exceptions where that type of content would do well here for some reason for some but for the most part we come to TH-cam for a different type of experience, at least in general.

    • @NathanKeysMusic
      @NathanKeysMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Amethystkorn Nonya Fair point :) Just my perspective on someone who follows twitch people on TH-cam and they show their twitch content on TH-cam for those who dont have time to see them live. The main ones that I’ve seen people doing wrong is just going live expecting people will find them, and also it takes WORK to get to where you want to be as well.

I have to agree and also disagree about the posting Twitch Compliations to TH-cam (and I know you say there are alwayse exceptions to the rules lol). I feel it depends more on the type of game you play and the demand for the game by viewers. For example, right now my main game is Hunt Showdown, and for a small, niche game like this, there is a decently large audience on TH-cam wanting to consume that content and not as many streamers/TH-camrs providing that content. Therefore, a Twitch Highlight video for that can go a long way. But Fortnite... no. There is SOOOOOOOOO much Fortnite content provided by SOOOOOOOOO many streamers/TH-camrs that you're correct in saying that you can't just post a Fortnite Highlight and expect views.
So, I argue that you should really reflect on the game, it's overall audience and demand, and how many people provide that content. If it's a game like Fortnite, then you would be wasting your time posting highlights. But if it's a game like Hunt then it could be worthwhile. But this also ties into the fact that you should enjoy the game you play. If you love Fortnite, accept the fact that you'll have to create original content to get discovered so that you can stream the game you love and be authentic while streaming.

Hm I’ve had such a different experience than you in uploading twitch highlights to TH-cam. I stream to about 150 viewers and my stream highlights get good views, 5,000+. My subs appreciate being able to see the highlights when they can’t catch streams. But I upload daily, and twitch highlights are a very small percentage of my TH-cam content. If I didn’t upload daily it might be different.

@@TheSmokedKarma "staying in character for 6 hour stream in unreal."
It's not particularly hard. We're trained to play a character with certain peoples in our lives. At least most of us are. My work persona has nothing to do with my "at home" persona and I can hold that one well over 6 hours. If my work was twitch streaming, there's no reason it wouldn't hold true. That's the only thing in that video that sounded like bullshit (although I'm sure he believed it himself). You don't know someone because you know them on twitch. Even if they try very hard to only tell and act truly to themselves.
