  • A left-wing coalition has pulled off a shock win in the French election in a nail-biting runoff.
The first round of voting put Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally on course to win in a result that sent shockwaves across Europe.
But tactical voting and high turnout allowed the New Popular Front to pull ahead.
The party is formed of a loose alliance of French socialists, greens and communists.
Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance finished in second, with National Rally in third place.
No single party has a majority in parliament.
Although the far-right did not do as well as they were projected to, they have drastically increased their number of seats in Parliament.
Probably need a national rally reaction here for balance
The French prime minister, Gabriel Attal, said he would resign.
Emmanuel Macron will continue on as president.
But the next few weeks will see intense political negotiations to pick a new prime minister, and form a government.
The president will likely have to share power with a leftist prime minister, opposed to his pro-EU, pro-business stance.
He took a major gamble by calling an election in the wake of the EU elections, where the far-right battered his centrist alliance.
