Control Review - Truly Brilliant

- Remedy Entertainment is a studio with a storied history, so to say that they're at their absolute best here is no slight praise, and it's not praise that's easily given- but Control is just that good. Whether it's a story you're looking for, or engaging gameplay with mechanical depth, Control has more than enough up its sleeve to keep you rigorously engaged from start to finish.

HeelHookHokage the best games are
Garbage respawn mechanics, it's not perfect.
3:58 this IS a horror game. The best designed horror games, just like movies, don't resort to cheap jump scares, but rather use atmosphere and tension to terrify you. This game does it perfectly.
Remedy has always done that.
They make THE most immersive shooters out there
@@yellowbat79 yeah their games have always been very atmospheric and kind of disturbing. Even Max Payne definitely felt like a psychological horror game a lot of the time
I'd say it's moreso paranormal creepiness than an actual horror game. It's bizzarre and weird, and the narrative is genius and not fully explained, forcing you to fill in parts of the world with your imagination.
@@yellowbat79 they are good at that BUT personally I think dead space 1 and 2 could give them some lessons
ikr this IS a horror game. i had to quit playing it for like 2 months before returning bc it made me shiver, even though i know there's no jumpscare in this game
this game is incredible! I highly recommend it
Cant wait! Is installing now!
recently downloaded this for free as a PSN game of the month. wasn't expecting much, turned out to be one of my favorite all time games. the storyline is RIGHT up my alley. love weird ambiguous shit like that. best part of the game is: its fucking COOL. feels like watching twin peaks. knowing about it makes you cooler than everyone else.
@@jackoo666 Same downloaded a few days ago and didn’t expect it to be so fun !
Just sunk my first couple hours into it.
It's the first game where I am reading every little piece of text I pick up.
It's just so interesting so far.
Hope it doesn't get too hard cuz I'm awful at 3rd person shooters
If you like the flavor text files...you need to check out the scp foundation wiki that's online. Control took major inspiration from that website
Have u completed it now? How’d u get on? I’m literally waiting for it to download so probably just leave it until tonight to start playing it now unless I decide to start this afternoon? Either way I decided to try it after hearing good things
Mark Wheeler did you enjoy it? Good timing with dlc just dropping
David Pitts I’ve finished it and even got the platinum trophy:) it was bonkers but fun, not got much of a clue as to what it’s about still but it was certainly different and I love that.
milixe1 ur not alone, I watched Control explained and thought “man I got none of that and still don’t get it but it was fun anyway”! Best was the freaky as fuk Threshold Kids episodes and the video of Dr Darling singing dynamite 🧨😂
I finished the main story... Finished the dlc.. And want more. One of the best story based fps games I've experienced in years.
i knew this game was gonna be good but WOW was not expecting this much praise... so excited to get my hands on this!
I'd been looking forward to this since the first teaser trailer in a sizzle reel a couple years back. I saw a Before You Buy and I was instantly sold. I bought it day one and I've not been able to put it down; it's absolutely my type of game. It's like Bioshock, SCP, and The Lost Room all rolled together into a Metroidvania. It really begs exploration and you get the most out of reading every little document you collect and piecing together all the lore. The only downside I've seen so far is the framerate dips and texture pop-in, but that sort of thing doesn't really bother me as much as other people -- I'm not a graphics snob in the least, but this game is FREAKING GORGEOUS. That and the amazing gameplay totally make up for any performance issues IMO, which hopefully they can fix with some patches. This is honestly one of my new favorite games ever.
While it was God tier back then, it didn't run good on ps4. Now I have the enhanced for xbox series S/X and it's beyond god tier. Top 10 game on anyone's list that has a working brain.
5:56 "it's no ORDINARY gun", pun intended
So far this game is absolutely amazing. I'm in awe with the story telling. Literally picking up every document I can find.
@Lightbringer Wtf?
It’s certainly a major hi-lights of this game. I’m a hardcore Bioshock fan and it harkens back to that.
Pun intended?
Finally a review of Control that I wholeheartedly agree with. For me, Control is at the same the best Remedy game to date, as well as GOTY 2019.
Playing it for the first time on PC. Almost max settings. 4k. RTX on. This game is a fucking visual feast.
This game came out of left field, what an experience so far though
Please gamers get this game its awesome support remedy
It’s a very good game😊🔥🥰🏆
vin 950 well I got it for PS4
Fuck Epic Games and there shitty Streaming service
So yeah I don’t blame you😊
@Henry Niemi Only you feel that DUMBASS. Don't buy the game. Plenty of people are going to. They DESERVE our love. Now go play call of duty bitch.
@vin 950 It's up to the publisher not the developer
@henry niemi Wow, grade A bullshit. Control is fun as hell and they deserve love for it. What games or publishers do you like?
@Henry Niemi What are you talking about? Control is one of Remedy's best games. It definitely deserves a lot of support and love.
Who knows if this does well enough we might get a sequel
WE WISH...
remedy doesn't like sequals
Its time to give us Alan wake 2 and Quantum Break 2 .Remedy is an awesome studio .
SONY Exclusives, they are buying this Studio after the success of THIS game
@@Joeki11a "success" Lmao. More like *trash, it's more accurate.
Mr. Snake It's getting 8-9s in this era a game like this gets 5-6s remember Days Gone?, this is Remedy MultiPlat success!.
@@Joeki11a Only for alan wake, it was a success. Control is nothing but an empty shell of his former predecessor.
Mr. Snake this is more Quantum Break, this character is Way more Dynamic. oh Alan Awake is mentioned in this game files.
I just bought it on way home so excited to play it!
I was hesitant to buy this game and now I can honestly say it's the most fun I've had with a video game in a while, I havnt finished the main story and can't wait to dive into the dlc after, worth every penny!
Bro this gale is boring af
Borrowed it from a friend. Giving it back soon, just bought my own copy.
It’s like Returnal: SCP edition.
This game is so freaking insane and ultra cool, remedy knows what we want and this paranormal madness is so delicious and a feast to the eyes
Now if they can just take what they learn from this game and apply it to Alan Wake 2.
This basically IS Alan Wake 2. It explains items and events in alan wake and even has an appearance from alan wake in one optional part
Yu fking serious on that last part?
@@PikaLink91 through multiple parts of the game there are references to Alan Wake. They bring Alan Wake into the lore. More like a "shared universe" kind of deal.
wajubalo I see, but while that is super cool and shows they still have him in mind that doesn’t make it a sequel.
@@PikaLink91 gto the panopticon 5th floor and look around there is an open there. hover there and you will see ACTUAL alan wake telling you something with his character ON SCREEN.
I played it for 2 hours and so far I like it more than I thought. I remember that I didn't like Quantum Break, didn't kept me as the original Max Payne or Alan Wake, and I thought this would be more downfall of Remedy, but it's the opposite of that. It's less linear which I like for a change from full linear story based games of before, but still has some interesting story concepts so far mostly in the notes you find. The environments have some amazing atmosphere. The engine is amazing, most impressive destructive environment I have seen so far, and the action gameplay feels more simple and fun than QB I think.
I fetlt this game reminded me more of Max Payne than Quantum Break
Control is best on a RTX capable pc. 2080, 3070ti, or 4060 with dlss enabled if you are coming up through the gpu generations. I play in 4K with dlss enabled on a 3080ti and it’s smooth 60+ fps the whole way.
The lighting in the northlight engine is awesome, especially once RTX is enabled.
Content wise the game is top notch with incredible world building. I can’t wait for Control 2.
And the tie-in to the remedy-verse is huge. Control is going to act as the base to which all other remedy game worlds attach. Quantumbreak probably won’t get included because MS owns the IP, but it does have hints or Easter eggs which point to the Remedy-verse. Alan Wake is 100% in, and the others Remedy owns are likely involved.
I love the way Control went about with its world building. Finding all the redacted memos and documents scattered about. And how they fleshed out both prior events, and the people who wrote them.
Just FYI, modern guns generally don’t use “clips,” almost all are now “magazines,” unless you’re talking old old guns that used these metal rails to hold the ammo.
So remedy are fans of the SCP Foundation. Thats is definatly 100% where they got inspiration from.
I didn't watch any videos first time playing it my self best experience and the destruction is fenomenal I study construction engineering and this is just so correct
I recently finished the game on my PS4 Pro and apart from framerate dips and (for me) overdone motion blur the other aspects of this game are just phenomenal.
I wasn't that interested in the game by watching the trailers but then I watched 30 mins of gameplay and DAMN I'm gonna buy it once it's on sale, looks awesome
Definite wait for sale... full retail price for a 10-15 hour game is questionable.
@@lewishague123 huh I thought it was longer than that but oh well. Guess Imma pick up ac odyssey first and if I have the money I'll buy control on sale
@@veiga4051 A lot of previews & reviews have stated 10-15 hours, with the odd one a few hours more... many also stating there's no replay value (no new game + for example). I'm sure it'll be discounted in a month or so!
Lewis Hague I'll never understand this mindset. Just because a game is 100+ hours long doesn't mean it isn't well crafted and absolutely worth the price of admission. Maybe it's because I've been gaming for some time but not too long ago games were $60 and less than 10 hours. For me and many others the price is well worth the admission.
@@shark_bytes_666 Each to their own I guess. Until they fix the glaring frame-rate issues i cannot see how anyone can justify a full retail price purchase (for people playing on console)
you should mention the hidden spaces that you can find by blowing up wall in the game.
From the makers of max payne wow.
Just started playing this. Love it!

Same. Was a bit worried leading up to release, but the praise is so refreshing.

The amount of frame-rate drops in this is inexcusable. Sort your fucking game out before shipping it at FULL retail price for a 10-15 hour game.
Aim Pierce is what you were showing us. Not the Charge Weapon, The Charge Weapon shoots up to 3 rockets.. But however I can see why that was a easy mistake because the Charge and Aim Pierce Weapon both have to charge up before it can fire off a round or rounds..
I'm on my 2nd playthrough and I gotta say...
"Control Is Bad Ass"
This game is amazing I can not stop playing it.
Ima cop for new gen.
Yes I'm so excited for this game!!
@Lightbringer I will be levitating for extra immersion!
@Lightbringer lol who hurt you?
@Lightbringer This level of hate towards women for just existing isn't right, you should get some therapy. Good luck!
@Lightbringer Women have no place being in masculine roles? That's just sexism. Women shouldn't just "stay in the kitchen." You realize women have been in the US military for decades, right? And on your third point, what's wrong with having a woman as main character in a video game? It's not like she's going around talking about her boyfriend or something the entire time. Not every game has to have a huge Marcus Fenix dudebro as the protagonist.
Loving this game so far. It’s fun and eerie at the same time
@Lightbringer you wanna see them in it?🤨
Remedy did something amazing in this game. Alan Wake was fenomenal, but Im sure Control is even better, they surpassed themselves, hope they continue like that.
Quantum Break was pretty darn great also. Control builds out new mechanics from its predecessor.
This game is really good but for me Alan wake just had that wow factor, 10 years later I still NEED AW2. I'm totally fine if there isn't another control.
Remedy is trash and fucked up this game. They dropped the ball. Remedy is trash. Period.
Finished it and ngl it was pretty good, went to it without knowing anything, just download it bc it was free, 8.5/10
I should have gone to bed by midnight but nooooooooo ! I'm gonna be up till stupid o clock in the morning now. Oh well 🤗
One of the best games I played
Remedy make beautiful games, stunning, pushing visual effects. I just feel most of their games tire the mechanics after the second act. The gameplay doesn’t really grow start to end. I hope this doesn’t follow the same.
It's funny you should say that, the combat starts off really basic and the guns are meh. I was really itching to get the floating power, which imo you get a bit too late in the game. In terms of fun though, the second half is actually a lot stronger.
This would’ve been a humongous W for Xbox if they locked this one down
Jay W. Any exclusive would be at this point
AB shalom what?
I was really looking forward to this game ever since I saw it announced. It's great to see it getting an overwhelmingly positive reception, and now I'm even more excited to play it.
Can't argue with any of the review. Big surprise of the year and the lack of hype makes it all the better. 'Didn't see that coming'... as they say
Such a unique and shining gem
Too bad brainless games like cod and fifa will sell much more copies than this
When you are talking about the "charge" weapon, you are actually showing the "pierce" variant, from what I can tell.
ok, the start of this answers my question. I was wondering if we would hear narration from her and I guess we do. Was wanting to buy this game and its nice to see it has a storyline.
Sony please pick this studio up before it becomes unavailable
The best game of the year so far for me.
My RTX2080 is ready!
One of my all time favorite games
You could have mentioned how hard this game is, holy shit they expect you to master it in the first hour
I didn't find it that hard. Given that tho, the floating boss kicked my ass a couple of times. But it isn't that hard to master once your used to it
I thought that at 1st lol. Gotta keep moving & collecting health off enemies you kill! I've done 3 story missions so far, it's OK, I wouldn't give it a 9/10 on what I've played but each to their own!
She reminds me of Fetch from inFAMOUS: First Light for some reason.
Maybe it's the same actress that motion capped Fetch in Infamous Second Son?
Fetch would beat her ass
Good sci-fi combat game. i was expecting alot more in terms of the story and its ending but gameplay wise, its a solid 8/10.
I finished this game and loved it
Much better than IGN 👍🏾🔥
I have nearly got the Levitate skill, then I can really start exploring. Loving this game it so awesome!!
I like how each reviewer has different compliments about the this game.
Not sure why people say linear story game is bad. I really hate choice making games which have ambiguous ending, so frustrating especially when it doesn't have sequels.
Is the standard ps4 version worth it on ps5? Its on sale for 8$
That is why you play games like this on PC and not PS4 ! Btw one of the best games i ever played .
I've asked Santa for this and CANNOT wait!!!!!!
The game mechanics were fun but the story fell flat for me it was a basic story and when i was 1/4 through the game i could already see the whole story and ending
The enemies were cool for awhile but they became stale quickly and other things that would only make me give this game personally a 6/10 i played it but i wouldnt play it again
Just started playing it. Wild stuff. Hard not to like.
Incredible game from remedy as always and Im playing it right now, cant stop playing.
But there's one thing... I pirated the game because it was only on the epic store and... no... Im not supporting that
Yeah I didn't wanna get off it good thing it came out at the end of August instead of fall time too many games coming out to get like a borderlands 3 and maybe call duty and many more but dope game overall hopefully this leads on to Alan wake 2 or a control 2
I guess it was a wise decision to pre-order it!
Preordering is never a wise decision, you filthy casual.
Love the storyline but this game needs skill levels like Alan week because if you come across one boss that you can’t beat you lose the whole storyline
9 points= 7points the game + 2 points the Remedy name
So basically this is a grown up Eleven.
@Frankie Basile U clearly didn't watch season 3
Control is a great experience. Truly amazing game w/breathtaking graphics & an utterly phenomenal atmosphere comparable to that of the "Metro" trilogy (which is REALLY saying something)!!!
see I can't even play it because my anxiety is acting up and not only that it's so much dust that has collected in my PS4 that it sounds like a vacuum now.
That was quick
Control Xbox One X Review: One of the Best Games of 2019
Control from Max Payne and Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment is the studio’s best game to date.
Remedy entertainment is just trash. Their games are garbage. They're just one of the worst companies ever seen. Remedy is trash.

@@GameMasterpg Reviews means nothing at all.
First of all if this game sells well, Remedy has no sell away their independence....if the game does bad, its unlikely that anyone would get interested acquiring them in first place...
So I would hold your horses with the "Sony would buy them" speculations when Remedy actually would prefer to remain independent.
Truly brilliant how awful the frame rates are
Shut up and take my money!
ambitious and outlandish ambissions
No hookups here. Allthough i play it on pc. So is an unfair comparison

Really surprised to hear critics say this is Remedy's best game ever, none of the gameplay looks all that impressive.

@@iangray1980 question. I know it's not mecessarily open world but how "open" would you say the game is?

@@iangray1980 alright that sounds dope. So it's like semi open but you gotta unlock more parts of the building to explore more?
Well if we look at the average review scores then Control is rated nowhere near as high as first two Max Payne games were, but definitely better than Quantum Break (which was not that hard considering that it was their worst game to date) and even on PC and Xbox its got bit better reviews than Alan Wake.
Psi Ops 2019 edition
Psi ops was a banger!
@@Slim-Boss 👍Those were the good old days. My girlfriend at the time totally took over my game and beat it. We also had the lastest Time Splitters game at that time. Psi Ops in my opinion either needs a sequel or remaster the first one. Those Jedi type powers were amazing at that time. Psi Ops would make a good Netflix movie also. I think Netflix is the place where we will start to see more video game based movies. Think of a rebooted Tomb Raider or Bioshock Netflix movie🤔
I love that game. Sucks how it ended on cliffhanger and was never resolved. I still play that on PC emulator sometimes and would wonder why no game devs play around with more telekinesis like powers. so awesome. I remember you could "mind control" the AI too and have them shoot each other. was such a blast. hopefully this game comes close

They are taken directly from their game engine that Remedy used in Quantum Break.
That character looks like black widow
ahaha ikr, Cyrstal Dynamics should borrow the character model in this game to replace their terrible black widow in The Avengers: The Game
This game is really fun too play .. how super hero games shud feel like
Control isn't brilliant and this review is awful. The respawn mechanic when walking into an area has massive flaws. From retriggering when walking over one with in seconds to excessive respawns in general. Throwing trash mobs constantly at the player is beyond annoying and not having a setting to fix it directly was unacceptable. It was hardly necessary to make this absurd mechanic when there was so much other content and the game didn't need that kind of annoying padding, which is what it felt like.
I had to either massively nerf the game to squash that annoying mechanic, which I did, or put up with waves of massively annoying respawns through out the games maps. It practically ruins the game.
You can kill people with cardboard boxes
Only 3hrs and 52min before release...
serpenthydra Really? I thought it releases tomorrow? Because I get a free copy of Control with my 2080ti I purchased and from what I remember it said it releases the 27th (tomorrow for me)
@@xNoto1riouZx Well... relative to time zone of course. It was 8:08 PM when I wrote that. I have it preloaded on my console - one of those times Quantum Break's time corridor would really useful.
Baring a reality ending paradox, of course...
@Frankie Basile Right.... And yet it comes with significantly less stuff! And what if the disk gets scratched?
@Frankie Basile Charming!
Ok but does it have jet packs!!!
Its a great game but don’t bother unless you’re on a top end PC or the xbox X
Why? I can run it at 1080p med settings and 60fps on a 1060gtx and a AMD FX 8350 CPU. This game at lower settings would run fine on even a gtx 960. This game is very optimized.
Now sony will love remedy even more, it make sense why they trust remedy and control now 😆
