- December Catfishing with Starkey Outdoors. Catoosa Oklahoma is where the McClellan-Kerr Navigation channel meets the Verdigris river. Pretty much the headwaters of the 445 mile journey to the Mississippi River.
Follow me along on my first catfishing trip there and see what we catch.

Channel cats are common and easy to get outta the Verdigris and not bad eatin' but to me the BLUE CAT is the Lexus of fresh-water fish! Especially when you catch 'em for breakfast and cook 'em up on the bank 5 minutes after you catch 'em! Best bait is perch or crappie...Catfish are like bananas, Grab 'em, peel 'em and eat 'em.
You bet.
thats my stomping grounds... Love it out there...
Good stuff man! I have had good luck around Afton Landing. Just so many huge cottonmouths out there, damn near infested. Makes bank fishing a little sketchy.
Fishing around some of those river boat ramps is sketchy for sure b😂cause of the seedy crowd. I try not to night fish there.
I think small cats like these are called "dinks". Still, a lot of fun and good eating size.
Boy you sure get around to all parts don’t you. Enjoy watching your videos. Some day I’ll have to sign up and go out fishing with you sometime. Be safe keep up the good work God Bless
Love to have you on board. Thanks.
@@StarkeyOutdoors I’ll make it work someday. Be safe out there. What drone are you using, DJI Mini Mav?
Mini 3
I guess the theory is that the boat will chew up a bunch of shad and they will fall to the bottom for an easy meal so the cats start looking after it passes. Wish we had those down here. I never fished that area when I lived up there.
Maybe so. Shad wouldn’t stand a chance in that turbulence.
When the bargest go through , the cats bite,, i can attest to that for a fact. Fishe the intracoastal canal in Louisiana many years , we just used shrimp never used shad or perch
Shrimp works here as well.
blue cats we put them back way to much red meat, love chanle cats
Thats funny. I wont eat channel because they taste bad to me. I release every one. Each to his own I guess.
I did a lot of fishing in San Francisco Bay for Stripers and Halibut and you would always catch fish after a tug boat cruised by. Something about the props churning up food off the bottom gets the fish crazy and into eating. Maybe the same thing happens with barges.
Absolutely.
I tired the nav channel couple times this week for the first time. Only caught 1 blue it’s been tough. Trying to find the good spots Im to river fishing usually fish lakes so little learning curve. Crappie are great in there though picked off several on structure.
Good luck!
I have fished that river for 30+ years keeps my freezer full of catfish GJ
What part of Oklahoma is that
We call it the barge bite
Sure is isnt it.
Do u ever dip your cut bait in bills stink bait
Sub’d to help out a fellow Okie. If you enjoy fishing for blues around barges, head over to St Louis and try it on the Mississippi River. Some triple digit fish in there!
I've heard they grow big there.
Why the live shad
Flathead catfish like live bait better. Blues eat both.
What stretch of the nav channel was this? I'm in ne ok
Rogers Point
If you want to catch bigger fish, use bigger bait.
You’re just eliminating the smaller bite with a bigger bait. Big fish hit small bait just as well. Ive caught two 60lb catfish on small bait. If i was tournimate fishing and didn’t want to catch little ones because of time management I would use a bigger bait. However thats just my opinion and you could be right. It’s always exciting to get a hit on a big bait. Thanks for watching.
I fish that river and catch giants
Did you purchase your 7 rod permit?
Your allowed 7 rods each in oklahoma. No such things as permits here. Thanks for asking.
