    One of the best and honest insights into the reality of wood-to-sales involving CNC I have seen. Love your approach. I did what you are doing now a few years ago and paid for my Shapeoko 3XXL in 6 months. There is a serious learning curve when first learning how to make your new home CNC do what you want, just like there is a learning curve when it comes to what to make and how to sell it. Just do it! Get in there and engage, find your audience and customer base, dip into social media or start looking into markets and events. A little research goes a long way. Thanks for the video and I am looking forward to your other projects.

    Love the video and I’m looking forward to the series. I’ve been running hobby CNCs for almost 10 years but my latest is also a Onefinity. You are spot on with your tips for pricing, there is a lot to consider not the least of which is what the market will bear. Anytime you can find a niche or a unique customization, you can really up your return on your items. I can’t wait to see how the Artisan market goes for you!

    I, thankfully, just stumbled across your channel. Love the project, nicely done! I appreciate your explanation as to how you yourself charge for your projects. A good take on the most difficult question.
    I myself have had my LongMill CNC for about 3 months now. Mainly made my clamps, a couple of signs and a cribbage board so far. Learning and growing every day. Your channel will be very helpful and inspiring. Keep it up! I have a market in November.... so I will be patiently waiting until October to see yours in action!

    Just a tip: You can use a round-over bit on the Onefinity too and save yourself the hand router work. Once you have it in your file you don't have to worry about making mistakes rounding over the wrong section. ;-)

    • @JoeLazzara
      @JoeLazzara ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Taliesen, that would require a bit change, right?
      Also, would rounding it over be a separate tool path?
      Im a newbie, thats why I'm asking lol. 😊
      Thanks!!

    • @Taliesen.
      @Taliesen. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoeLazzara Yes and yes. I'd actually cut with it first then switch to the 1/4" bit he was using to do the rest. That way you are not risking the piece moving once the profile cut is done. Carveco posted a video on YT a couple months back on using a round-over bit, talked about how to create the tool profile, tool path, etc. It may still be their most recent video if you want to find it.

      But you have to round over both sides, so you'd have to do a 2 sided carve - MUCH more complicated.

    One of my issues with my own designs is the blade being a little loosey-goosey. I think it’s because my design is slightly off kilter causing them to be a little bendy. Hoping your design does better for me! fingers crossed!!

  • @wmcrash
    @wmcrash ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bro, that was a ton of wasted walnut! It's not that you could have squeezed a third item in there, but even the small offcuts, I'd be finding smaller things to fit in between. Like I'd fit small 1oz size mini-bowls that people can use to put their herbs and salts and spices when they cook with an audience and need to look fancy.
    Good luck with everything!
    Also, make sure to livestream the craft show.

    Hey dumb question for ya - I use gorilla double sided tape for workholding and when my endmills reach the final pass on the bottom of the piece it sometimes picks up some of the tape and it gets the endmill all gummed up. Do you ever have that problem? What kind of double sided tape do you use? Great videos btw!

    I seldom buy files, I'm of the mindset I rather make it myself. Saves money and at the same time keeps my design skills sharp. That being said, for $2.89 I couldn't NOT buy your bread knife file. Came out nice for the most part. Had some issues with tabs and may have lost one of the two I made. Ended up with a ugly gouge. I may be able to dress it up with some epoxy. I also made a matching board though that I did on my own.

  • @McCartWoodworks
    @McCartWoodworks ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree with your pricing to an extent. You never really factored your time into it. You need to pay yourself and that is not the profit of the product. I like to go with (material cost + hourly wage + cnc time) * 1.5. This covers the materials my time wear on my bits and electricity and then provides a profit to the business. Now after I do that if the price is to high and I do not believe I can sell it I may just not do that product but if my clients I sell to will pay more I may adjust the price up a bit. This pricing model allows me to pay myself and also have the business make a profit that is separate from my wages to put back into the business.

    • @HamiltonDilbeck
      @HamiltonDilbeck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats great insight, thanks!!

    • @McCartWoodworks
      @McCartWoodworks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HamiltonDilbeck No problem. Just think of yourself as an employee of your company. Like any company they would factor in materials, labor and wear on machines then mark up the product to make a profit. If was making a batch of 10 items and used $100 in wood and hour of my time to prep and finish all 10 and 100 minutes of cnc time I would charge as follows. $100 (materials) + $60(hourly wage) + $100 (cnc time) = $260 *. 1.5 (profit margin can be reduced or increased) = $390 /10 = $39 per item. Now my materials were covered, my time, cnc and the company now has $130 in profit. I also first pay for the materials, my time,cnc then profit in that order as the items sell. This way if only a few sell them at least materials were paid for then myself and so on with the company being the last to be paid.

    @wmillios ปีที่แล้ว

    Did I miss something? You had seven dollars in the wood and the blade, then six minutes on the CNC at a dollar a minute - you said that's $3? It should have been six dollars, for a total of $13 product cost?
