My brain need to do different stuff one day to another. I naturally feel into this after the first year or two in business. Now that I have my niche, I have a small following but make way more money doing what I love than I did in the beginning. I create an “experience” every time and they keep coming back for more 🙏
This is great advice for a lot of solo businesses. TH-camrs for example make channels for different types of content becaus ethey know putting everyting on their main channel will harm their growth in the long run
There are differing schools of thought in re this question. Life is undoubtedly much easier if one knows what works for them. A good presentation with a compelling argument.
So I like this a lot from a strictly business perspective! Makes sense to narrow down your focus and improve in one area; helps refine your business and make your sales clear and defined. I did notice someone else in here say that they have ADHD and can't stay niched in one area, to which I agree and feel! However, my approach is to keep business and "artistic" pursuits separate. You can absolutely crush it in the business, and as things go along it'll open up the way for you to explore the craft artistically. We shouldn't stop exploring and dreaming just because we want to build a business! Yet with business, we can't go chasing so many things that take us nowhere. Both pursuits can be achieved with some time and diligence.
I have been a pro photographer since 2008 - I have never had a client say he help me with my Branding…or lifestyle or anything other than take pictures of people or stuff and we will pay you to do it. There are few pros in my area who are worth more than $200/hr. As far as niche for me, I focus on shooting photos of people wearing clothing and occasionally food for restaurants. This pays the bills for me!
I'd like to make money with photography but I don't know how with wildlife photography. I feel like this video only helps with other niches and if you already know how to make money with your niche
@@stevecarty Miss you to buddy. She's now a 2 time stage 4 cancer survivor. Life is challenging but we carry on. Keep up the great work! Would love to catch up with you some day soon :)
Hello Steve. How would you see the PISS method applying and working for profit if the photographer's niche or specialty is wildlife and nature photography? I see how it can more easily apply to portrait, wedding, product photography, etc, but I often feel that wildlife is almost impossible to reach the same levels of profit as the other genres cited here. I'd truly appreciate your feedback on this 🙏
Only thing I can think of is doing photos for a preserve, zoo, animal shelter, etc., maybe. But obviously that’s different than true wildlife photography.
Thanks all, exactly... sad but true. I definitely need a second niche for profit making. Too much investment in time and equipment to not have any financial return.
This advice applies to almost any business. In grad school (Health Care Administration) we had an exercise called "ATAP". ATAP stands for All Things to All People. This exercise was a financial exercise that very quickly showed the students that attempting to be all things to all people is almost NEVER a successful strategy.
True. I’ts also skill. Watching seasoned wedding photographers trying street photography. It’s underwhelming. And they know it. Or a guy in England who only shoots meals in a certain look. He is an a niche of a few, and his specific look is his brand.
Well, that’s certainly ONE way to look at it, HOWEVER….in a major city, I’ve been doing non-niche work for 44 years….people, places, products. And no weddings. My advertising clients LOVE a vendor who can handle more than one specialty. THAT is my edge….DON’T be limited by subject Matter. Lastly, I have a terrible online presence, low followers, zero engagement, and…I could care less! I engage with those that are the decision makers…the art buyers, directors, etc. Being “popular” with non-industry types is of zero significance! -68, 44 in the trenches; 1980 Art Center/LA.

Now I'm hesitating for the next one, even if I checked that they are real. Is it better to open an Instagram shop than to wait for an offer?
What's wrong with me ? I simply want to make great images in photography at subjects that I find interesting, such as vintage junk yards, vintage car shows, vintage drag racing, and landscapes. Money is the furthest thing from my mind. I take photos out of a personal need and desire discovering these subjects for my own and sharing them with others.

@ it’s a title. Jeez my guy lighten up on creators trying to help you. You’re spending a lot of effort trying to prove me wrong, poke holes, he did first,… don’t you have a business to run?
I've been a professional photographer for 10 years here in Australia and due to the size of the industry ( 1/10th the size of the US) it's not sustainable to just be e.g a head shot photographer...that being said in the past few years I've started shooting for film and television and I absolutely love it ! BUT I am still not at a point where this is the only type of work I shoot, I still shoot commercial work to pay the bills...different sized markets can dictate what is possible and sustainable....i've noticed ad photographers shooting for film and tv now because there's no advertising work 🤷🏽♀
Just keep upping your skills. Your work determines your market. Do more commercial work for better clients with deeper pockets. Up the level of the work, your techniques, style and customer experience. Once you say yes to everything you’re average at all of them.
@@iunderstanphotography2780this may be true! BUT. The general consumer cares less about the quality of the product in favour of the photographer's likeability. For example. If photographer 1, has a big following on Facebook, the general consumer will think they are really good as they must get lots of work. And if photographer 2 has a small following, the general consumer will not be attracted to them unless they really really like their aesthetic.
you're making statements that are true because you believe them to be. You're also working for people, who have no clue or money over companies who have a reason and a need for the work that i create. choose the average consumer as your client base and you'll always be dissappointed. i don't deal with the average consumer. I deal with people who see my value.
All good points and great video. I just don't have the attention span to even finish this video let alone niche down to one thing. that is so sad this is what the industry has become. 30 years ago, you could do it all and it was fun. doing only one type of photography is just business and business is soulless. There are many of us that want to do different things in photography that is the whole point. For a photographer to be good they should be able to do it all, it was never that hard of skill set to master and now with all the Automatic AI functions anyone can do it.........but that is why you have to niche, it's the only way to stand out. that's sad. that's not photography, that's hell.
I’ve been in this industry for 34 years. You can complain about how things used to be or you can adapt and work today in the way that things are. Things will never stay the same. That’s happened exactly. Never. Life is about developing. Like we used to do back when I started film when I was 14 years old.. I shot film for 20 years before digital. What if I didn’t adapt then? No career. What if I wasn’t a specialist? No career. Adapt or watch the world pass you by. That’s the word on the street. Complaining about how things are gets you nowhere. How can you expect to achieve mastery if you’re trying to be the jack of all trades? Think of a samurai . Think of a monk. Think of a player of a musical instrument. How many gifts do you think you get? You can shoot anything and everything that you like . Which will make you absolutely average at everything The only way to achieve mastery at any one thing is through obsession . If you want to make a living at Photography, you have to obsess over one niche. Obsess or cry about it .
Sadly, they won’t. Without an audience you’re just doing this for you. Either sell prints or books or both but without an audience, who are you shooting for? Are you even making video content?
Yeah but when that one part of the industry fall back you fall back too, or end up dying from being bored or burn out because of the monotony. People want to categorize you like you can do only one task right, but it's not for everyone. Take examples from other jobs like house renovations. Nowadays one people or one team can work on the whole house, not just knowing to work on the bathroom or on the living room or on the kitchen. Because they are similar jobs. So it's not like everyone just need to do this because that is also following a trend.
Actually that representation with smarties is wrong. 😅 because you should number how much violett ones are and then one of every color with the same number. Because it s full it has the same lvl skill on purple too🤣
well i for sure could have done that but if you watched until the very end, you would have caught the joke about there not being enough purple smarties.

I also have a good understanding of TH-cam's algorithm. Let me know if you'd like to collaborate! Best regards, M Creation
Been doing it for almost 10 yrs off and on. Here’s what google says. Why are men wearing nail varnish? Men are wearing nail polish because they feel comfortable doing it. They no longer feel like there is anything “wrong” with wanting to express themselves through little flashes of color, or even black, on their nails. And there is nothing wrong about it. Mar 8, 2023 Pretty much sums it up.
Interesting idea however I think which ever niche market you choose it’s saturated with content so you have to diversify, me? I’m the Swiss Army knife of photography 😄👍

@@stevecarty yep, but teach that principles for more than a decade, so "nobody teaches You" is not so precise. :) Still, great video what so ever.
@ it’s a title. Jeez my guy lighten up on creators trying to help you. You’re spending a lot of effort trying to prove me wrong, poke holes, he did first,… don’t you have a business to run?
Hi ! is it true for a small market as a little island of almost 300000 people ?
You should
Book a free consult with me. I’ll teach you how to do it.
Great advice!
Glad it resonated.
Thank you!
i'm here for you.
Very well said!
thx ethan.
@@stevecarty "...Once you say yes to everything you’re average at all of them..."
@@stevecartyus market has a completely different potential than any other...
Great stuff!
Thanks for watching.
Which will make you absolutely average at everything
The only way to achieve mastery at any one thing is through obsession . If you want to make a living at Photography, you have to obsess over one niche.
Obsess or cry about it .
I enjoy landscape photography but don’t know how people will pay me for that. Lol.
You know more than me then. Go to it. Start a channel.
Love the finger nails color very tasteful
my girl and i go together. it's a thing.
Drowning, that’s photographer #1. Only 1% of that so to speak type of photographer is strong enough to swim in the deep water.
Are you making lots of money from your photography?

Now you’re making me hungry for candy 😋
Bro, where have you been the last three years 😂❤
Here. And STEVECARTY.com I’m an actual photographer. Not a ytr.
These videos are not made for people with misophonia 😬. Great info though
emotional responses are sometimes exactly what's needed. TH-cam is hard.
This was a great video 📸
Thanks for watching!

Why painted nails?
Why do you care about my personal style choice? It’s personal style. This is all. I’m not the first dude to do malepolish.
Just want to understand why man paint their nails? Must be a reason...
Mar 8, 2023
Pretty much sums it up.
PISS? Bruh!
It seemed to work.
Interesting idea however I think which ever niche market you choose it’s saturated with content so you have to diversify, me? I’m the Swiss Army knife of photography 😄👍
Which means you’re average at all of them. What have you obsessed over? SteveCarty.com
