I’m so happy you talked about free client work. I was able to get two clients during this upcoming grad season to shoot their grad pics for free. It’s the first time I’m going to be doing a shoot for someone besides a close friend or family. I’m nervous as hell but I trust myself to do great. This is so encouraging
Broo good luck!! I was like that for a long time. I'm so introverted too. I was only using friends to do shoots and I'd take my camera everywhere just to take free photos for practice that I never had photos with people outside of my few friends. I started photography 8 months ago with literally no knowledge of any of it. Now, I'm getting booked for shoots by other people it's overwhelming but such a great feeling to know how much it paid off because I know what I'm doing now. I did a college soccer team a week ago, I'm doing a brand in April, and I just got hired for the atlanta tattoo convention next weekend! You'll do great! Just don't ever ever give up even when you doubt yourself.
@@esquero I know I am not the intended person but thank you for this response as it motivated me as well. I basically started taking photos late December and trying to build my portfolio to book clients. I did a couple shoots free for friends and family but still need more exposure. I am more introverted so I get extremely nervous or experience imposter syndrome when I am asked how much I would charge to do a shoot. But I am pushing myself to be confident in myself.
@Rodean Lewis hey man good luck fr!! I wish you nothing but success! Just remember DO NOT GIVE UP. There will be many many days where you doubt yourself and where you feel like you might not make it but I promise you that if you can push past that barrier you will make it FAR
I am an event and studio photographer and started out by going out at events I enjoyed and shot for free then sent the shots to the project manager (if I could find them), word to mouth, being available and boom, you get the ball rolling. Great video Eric, down to earth !
any recommendations for studio photography? im a high schooler who mostly shoots sports but I'd love to venture out andshoot grad pics, portraits. etc.
As a starting photographer I only focussed on pregnancy, newborn and couples but I am getting bored of it. Last weekend I made an amazing portrait of my sister and then it hit me, why limiting myself? My work is absolutely gorgeous! You just inspired me more to go and experiment.
A business mentor of mine said. " you can't give it away for free, don't charge". It always made sense to me because if you can't give your product/service away, it's not good enough for someone to pay for it.... side bar thank you for these FREE & HELPFUL tips ❤.
Photographing for free is often overlooked for networking/building your portfolio when done strategically. I am glad you spoke up on this controversial topic to grow a successful career as a creator! I still utilize this sparingly, even as a seasoned photographer.
I loved how you explained how to serve your client, also how to allow your own creativity to take over. Both require being genuine and human, rather than distracted and robotic.
I am an automotive photographer, I really sympathize with going above and beyond for my clients.... I have clients that have literally stated that the reason they don't try new photographers is because I treat them well... I surprise loyal clients with posters of their cars, I feature them at events when we have our booth setup, and as a Canadian, I always ask if they want a Tims (if ya know then you know) ... This is absolutely KEY!! Great advice and great video
Shooting for free has been a boon to my business, great tip and definitely a skill/perspective expanding practice. It’s also definitely something to get over when you’re starting out.
❤️❤️❤️ I still can’t believe how much shooting for free gives me more opportunities. Such an amazing business tactic that no one wants to engage well into their career.
I want to say this video is a voice of inspiration for me. At this moment in time I have recently revived a couple 35mm cameras. I spent my last couple days off wandering around where I live burning through 10 rolls of film. And after word meeting the curious few intrigued by the film format and pondering the possibilities of photography. I found myself smiling uncontrollably without prompting the muscles to do so. Struggling with anxiety and depression as far back as I can hold a memory, trying many things to cope, heal, or move on in life. I have tried more hobbies than I can count and none have left me with a feeling of reward or purpose more than what I did in the last two days. I am now waiting for the negatives to be processed to see what worked and what didn’t
I think this is the best 'how to become a photographer' video I have seen. It felt real and like the advice came from a place of knowledge rather than 'just what everyone wants'. This has actually inspired me to photograph more and worry less about the money and more about the experience and what I have to learn.
Probably one of the humblest and more real and encouraging video have seen about getting in this business. I myself I’m facing all that and more. Starting from scratch, following my long time passion or trying to turn it from a hobby to something real and full time, after 16 years working corporate, felt like it’s time to put my work force on something mine. Took the chance that I moved to other country and started to pursuit my dream. My previous job allowed me to have some commercial vision that makes me keep my feet on the ground and know this is not an easy business but it’s nice to see inspiring videos such as this one from someone that traced that path and shares some of the formulas to help us getting there.
I’m a professional at this point by that I just mean this is my career. I still shoot for free when I’m trying to add something to my portfolio or if it’s a niche I wanna break into where I have nothing to show for yet. I meet a lot of people with bad attitudes who are in their first year and think that they should never have to do anything for free and clients should just be falling in their lap. Don’t be like that, be grateful for every dollar you get to make as an ARTIST. And give back as much as you can.
The whole free photography angle has to be such a fine line. You don't want to be known as the guy that will work for free, but you also want to get your foot in the door with new customers. You'd have to have some pretty clear boundaries set up pretty early.
Amen my friend. Pushing hard right now to do this full time and creating full time. Connections, the people, the clients, and the freedom to add something awesome to the marketplace.
This video is right on time for me. I'm starting my photography business and these tips and lessons learned have proven to be a great help in this process. Thank you!!!
I have just, ever so lightly, began to take photos of things/activities that interest me. I’ve been taking photos of friends and family and sharing them without any intent to charge. I’ve been doing both black and white film and digital so far.
this has been THE BEST advices I have ever received. I am about to start my Photography business after 13 years of shooting different things and getting shut down by my friends/family. and boom your videos pops up on my feed. THANK YOU !
This video was so unique and truly insightful. Your words felt genuine as if you were giving advice to a close friend. It was refreshing to watch. You have gained a new subscriber my friend.
I've been shooting for 3 years and I can always see a slight improvement every shot that I take. I want to move on to getting paid stuff just on the side and I'm really thankful that I found your video!
You gave great tips. Last one made me subscribe. So many people fixate about the financial part of photography and forget what it's all about. Got yourself a fan :)

So the business I worked for closed last Thursday and I have decided to try to become a professional photographer. This video was so reassuring that I'm heading along the right path so far and it also taught me stuff as well. Thanks Eric.
@highresopenings4610 notngonna lie, its difficult, working part time as a teacher and taking photography jobs in between but I feel like I'm pushing the ball rather than it rolling 😂
This is great advice for a newbie like me. I'm getting a camera very shortly and Autumn to Winter has great events for me to practice in different situations, Halloween, Christmas and a trip to Norway in the dead of winter.
Absolutely Inspiring!! I personally struggle with booking shoots. I don't have a huge portfolio so this definitely gave me that little extra boost of confidence and encouragement to keep working, push a little harder and go get what I've dreamt of for years now! Thank you Eric!!
I love this video! It gave me hope and inspiration to actually go out and take pictures and slowly become a wonderful Photographer like I have always wanted and dreamed of... Thanks so much!!! 😄
I'm brand new to photography, in the sense of wanting it as a career. I have devoured so much information in such a short window, but this video actually gave me complete insight as to where I should start from. The world will know my photography one day and I'll have you to thank. ❤
Love to see you leaning back into teaching the basics! This is where the spark is provided for a new generation to begin the journey. Keep it up man, I'm rooting you on!
I’ve been saving for a professional camera in order to become a freelance photographer & I just want to say I loved this video. FIRST of all. Amazing video, great advice as always! BUT CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE STYLE?? Good lord, Wes Anderson, filmmakin', vintage lookin', gorgeous colors and warmth UGH so pretty.
always love your videos, friend. I am in year 2 of being a freelance wedding photographer and it's still growing, quite slowly tbh. but I feel it getting more this year! even now, I still shoot some sessions for free to really get my portfolio better!
I just started my Visual Communications program and am photography and videography focused. This was really helpful for someone whos picking up a camera for the first time!
Clicking on this video was an accident, but I'm so glad that I did the thing that stood out for me was "get bored and create" as someone who is always trying to consume, being bored feels weird, like I'm not productive enough, I'm not living life to the fullest, yet I lack the creative space to just think. I felt like it was good advice, not a career I'm interested in but if I was, I know where to come back to this video!
This video really helped clear up some things i was wondering about, didn't think about and already knew in a short and well put together video. Thank you!

But it's a work in progress and hopefully it will take me to new heights at some point. It's something that I want and that been dreaming of for a long time, so it's always good to see and learn new approaches. Thank you for this very informative and interesting video.
This was just excellent. I've been doing free shoots and getting some slack for it, but it makes sense and helps get my foot in the door. Great upbeat, knowledgeable presentation. Many thanks!
"Shoot for Free" Whenever I hear a photograp[her saying you should NOT shoot for free, I know they have never been in the business. Shooting for free is how most fashion photographers, editorial photographers, and commercial photographers get started. Every single successful photographer I have ever known has shot for free. Shooting for free sometimes means shooting for access, or shooting for exposure, or shooting for the love of a great project. There is a difference between shooting for free and being taken advantage of, but that's on you as the photographer. I rarely find real voices in the tubes, ones who have walked the walk. Spot on.
LITERALLY!!!!! shooting for free has been great here recently currently iim working at a coffee shop and I've been doing their advertisement photos and they have been getting me so much local exposure and getting my name out there but I completely agree I would recommend that its great to shoot free until you are able to gain jobs on your own
Your photo style is so.beautiful. Wow. I've never seen a video like this. I am a budding photographer and looking for this kind of advice. I am starting out the same, running with the opportunities that come my way. I am working on building my website currently. I hope to use my passion for photography to create art that shows and showcases pure beauty. Hard to balance what of that to post, expectations, how to not sound like a snob when marketing myself, etc. Genuineness like yours seems rare in this business. Huge compliments to you! Inspired by your business and advice.
Amazing, truly amazing.i'm a beginner photographer and i was really enlightened listening to you❤❤❤,i also ended this vedio by subscribing to your channel, thank you 👍👍👍.
yes, shoot for free but also yes. to do it when you think it will help/benefit you in the long run. im sure that sounds selfish but you really have to think like that at times or else you might continue shooting for free not thinking you are good enough. theres fine lines to shooting for free, but i agree with you on that 100%. great point. overall fantastic vid
Question for you! How do you deal with people telling others that you will do photo jobs for them for free? The problem I find with shooting for free is that the next time an opportunity comes up, because you are known to do photography for free, people expect it for free and when you tell them pricing then the opportunity can disappear… Thanks for your help!
Whenever I shoot for free I strictly state that I’m doing it for the occasion and portfolio experience. If someone else develops the expectation I find a kind word and the honest truth to be helpful. Most of the models I’ve done for learning portrait and expressing my ideas were asking for free and for a bit I lost a few when I’d state no, but I found tailoring expectations and telling people where I’m at is important.
Great question we all have asked but if we're being honest- we already know the answer. Truth is, we have to be honest & now say that you are charging X price for the project. Problem is, we're scared of sending that message. Truth is, we have to eventually be fine with missing out on opportunities by not doing it for free being it is no longer *sustainable*. A very important word Eric used in this video I learned late in my career.
Another piece of advice is, whenever I do free work, I quote the project & put in a contract telling a client: I will be doing XYZ providing XYZ deliverables, which is priced at X amount; however, I will be doing it for free. Then, next time someone reaches out, let's say it's the same thing, now you tell them that's the price. If it's something different, quote them differently. Does that make sense? If not sorry lol feel free to ask me more questions
Very inspiring, i do photography for just me and my little family and I love it! I just need to get out there and do some free shoots to get more experience with other people as well. I’ve gotten compliments on my pictures but never went past that! Thank you!
Eric thanks for this video, literally appreciate all the advice you gave us. Super excited to get my website going just not sure what i should post or blog about just yet as im only 2months in with my sonyA7II but im enjoying the journey and learning Patience
I feel like I hit a plain wall whenever it came to shooting for free but I am becoming more and more experienced and I agree we have to go out and shoot. I have been shooting for almost about a year and I love everything about this. I have a couple of gigs here and there but I am convinced that the more I shoot for what I like the more I will get rewarded for my work sooner than later. I really love your page by the way. Create What Inspires! MI :)
Good stuff here - I cant emphasize enough the power of partnering with other creators as well. I do it for free because of the marketing impact it can have(it has to be strategic and with purpose). I don't consider it giving away my services - i consider it adding value to my brand. I have also got some of my best repeat clients by proposing a free shoot to show them what I am capable of. It has lead to multiple re-occurring photo shoots. It has to be for brand/portfolio building or have a purpose. Free marketing has lead to more business than anything else.
Nice video. 1. The black square thingy background is intriguing to me. Can you tell more about it!! What's that? 2. And your room tour, editing setup, editing start to finish process.

I shot for free a lot! Not only did it create content to market but I learned how to talk, direct, do business, and of course it started building word of mouth. A few hours of your time goes a long way.
Such valuable content, thank you so much for the advice. I've really been into photography the last few years and recently have wanted to try out doing photography for others. Thanks so much
How to become a professional photographer 1 - Learn the basics Exposure Aperture Iso Composition Lighting Editing 2 - Take your camera with you and shoot your friends 3 - Shoot for free (friends, family) 4 - Make a website 5 - Get a photo delivery service 6 - Share your work everything 7 - Serve your clients

yes, shoot for free but also yes. to do it when you think it will help/benefit you in the long run. im sure that sounds selfish but you really have to think like that at times or else you might continue shooting for free not thinking you are good enough. theres fine lines to shooting for free, but i agree with you on that 100%. great point. overall fantastic vid
That last part was powerful and exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you so much dude🙏
Great advice. Especially love the last minute of the video. So down to earth
That felt super wholesome at the end.
Damn near teared up. 👌🏼♥️ great work man.

Thank you Eric for your inspiring wisdom and sharing your experiences, great video! Thank you!
Very inspiring, i do photography for just me and my little family and I love it! I just need to get out there and do some free shoots to get more experience with other people as well. I’ve gotten compliments on my pictures but never went past that! Thank you!
I've been doing photography for nearly 3 years now and I still work for free. I need that portfolio and practice! May as well do it for free! ✌
MI :)
The typeface you're using is wonderful! I love it
When I first started. Taking pics for free has been a big help for me to practice as well
Good stuff here - I cant emphasize enough the power of partnering with other creators as well.
Appreciate the very heartfelt advice - Service your clients!
It takes an incredible amount of time and effort to get one great shot
Nice video.
1. The black square thingy background is intriguing to me. Can you tell more about it!! What's that?
2. And your room tour, editing setup, editing start to finish process.
what about for someone like myself just starting out, is adobe portfolio a good starting as a "website" type thing?
What a great video with some out of the box tips. Loved it!
The fact that you appeared on my feed makes me proud of my algorithm

This is incredible! Thanks
I shot for free a lot! Not only did it create content to market but I learned how to talk, direct, do business, and of course it started building word of mouth. A few hours of your time goes a long way.
This really helped me a lot as a Junior in high school. Thanks. I needed this reassurance
Thanks you. This was a very helpful video for someone looking to get back into photography.

Awesome video!! Thank for for being so real. A lot of common sense stuff here that is unfortunately becoming more uncommon. Keep up the great work!
Loved the play with lighting in this Eric. Reminded me a little bit of Bo Burnhams “inside.” Also, mustache game is on point 👌🏻
