  • Here is a video for Dewey Cox's Beautiful Ride from the film Walk Hard.
    Lyrics:
    Now that I have lived
    A lifetime's worth of days
    Finally I see
    The folly of my ways
So listen when I sing of
    The temptations of this world
    Fancy cars and needles
    Whisky, flesh and pearls
    And then in the end
    It's family and friends
    Loving yourself
    But not only yourself
    It's about the good walk
    And the hard walk
And the young girls you've made cry
It's about make a little music everyday 'til you di-ie
    Beautiful ride (Chorus)
As I stand on the precipice of death
    My perspective is enormous
    Every leaf, every cloud
I see the hands which have formed us
And some days all you got
    Is a nighttime graveyard walk
And you whistle some quick melody
To the ghosts down at the dock
    It's about the good walk
    And the hard walk
And the young girls you've made cry
It's about make a little music everyday 'til you di-ie
    Beautiful ride(Chorus)
    (bridge--)
    Sing in to your hand
    Lead the marching band
Don't you let 'em fade your colors gray
'Cause when all is said and done
When youth is spent and burned
You'll see that it's all about
    Music!
    Flowers!
    Babies!
    Sharing the good times!
    Traveling not just for business!
    Excepting your mortality!
This- is finally what I've learned!
    And then in the end
    It's family and friends
    Loving yourself
    But not only yourself
    It's about the good walk
    And the hard walk
And the young girls you've made cry
It's about make a little music everyday 'til you di-ie
    Beautiful ride
    (Chorus-2x)

The songs in this movie have no fucking business being so good. It's crazy how much work they put into each of them. They totally ride the line of being brilliant in a comedic sense and genuinely brilliant.

It's not just you. Jake Kasdan, the director, and Judd Apatow said in the Bonus Features for the DVD that the reactions they got from test audiences were similar to yours - they got choked up. So they actually added the comedic "flashbacks" into the song to lighten the mood.
As much as I enjoy the movie, I listen to the soundtrack even more. Also, there's a deluxe version of the soundtrack - only available as a digital download, as far as I know - available. I think I got it from ITunes. And I believe it contained every song from the movie except the remake of David Bowie's 'Starman,' which, oddly enough, IS on the regular version of the soundtrack. I read somewhere that they wanted to release a physical box set and call it "Box of Cox," but for whatever reason, that never happened.
And there's one more song that I know of that only appears in the Bonus Features - and is also here on TH-cam somewhere - 'A Dewey Cox Christmas.' John Reilly channels Elvis for that one. :)

This film is very underrated. It starts as a simple parody of music biopics, but ultimately ends on a heartfelt message. It uses comedy to ease the audience in and takes a shift in the third act. Much like the characters life, it begins in the sphere of esthetic and worldly pleasure to ultimately end in the sphere of self reflection and existential understanding.

And a Grammy. It really is that good. Whoever was behind writing each of the Dewey Cox songs in the movie should get a Grammy, An Oscar, Presidential Medal of Freedom, be Knighted, and have at least one item on the menu at McDonalds named after them.
Being a big fan of American music from every era in the 20th century, it was a lot of fun and actually edifying to listen to the songs on the solid track and figure out who he was meant to be mimicking. “Black Sheep” is obviously an homage to Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds, “A life Without You” is all Roy Orbison, “Royal Jelly” is 100% Bob Dylan. The soundtrack is one of the most criminally underrated, original musical compilations ever attached to a film.
And can we talk about what an amazing vocalist John C Riley is?? I have actually put “Beautiful Ride” and “A Life Without You (Is No Life At All) in my Favorites mix . They really are that good.
These songs are genuinely great on their own, but when you stop to think about the fact that the writers were actually trying to capture the sound of particular artists without straight up copying any of their music. The fact that they were able to do that, and do it SO well, takes the music to a whole different level in my opinion. I can’t wait until my daughter is old enough to start watching movies like “Ray” and “Walk the Line” (the serious biopics) because once she has seen them, the culmination of her musical/artist biopic education is going to be Walk Hard. The way the writers and producers managed to work in SO many life experiences of other famous musicians into one lifetime makes Dewey Cox the Forrest Gump of the music world.

This song reminds me of looking at the big picture. It's not about work, meetings, paying taxes. It's about appreciating what you have and trying to enjoy your ride in this world and making sure that the people who love you know how much you love them back. In the heat of everyday life, it's very easy to forget that and songs like these help you remember it and can get you out of really dark spots in your life. Yes, I took all of that from a movie with lots of dicks on screen and where a guy breaks a sink every time he gets angry. I fucking love this movie and love this song even more!

Whenever i am down i just sing this song to myself, it has been almost 20 yrs since this movie came out, and not one comedie movie has topped it ever, and to not forget about the wonderful songs which are funny yes but brilliant in every sense of the word. John C Reilly is an amazing artist and he gave us a gem with this movie and i am so sad it os not talked about more

For me this is not just a comedy movie. Just shows us that along the way we make a lot of mistakes but fortunately it would never be too late for us to change and straighten everything out. And it shows how much struggle he put through in order for him to achieve his dreams even without the support of anyone he forged on only believing in himself.

A lot of the songs from this movie were written by a singer songwriter by the name of Dan Bern; this song included. I've been listening to him for years and one day I stumbled upon this movie and when I finally finished it I was really surprised to hear Beautiful Ride finishing it off. If you liked this one, I suggest checking Dan out because he has a lot of fantastic songs similar to this one.

And it is Dan at the organ in this scene. there was an outtake where he gets up to fix the speaker... wish they used it. I arranged and conducted this song (and the whole score) Everyone who worked on music did a cameo somewhere (like Dan in this scene).

It's a hysterical movie with some sweet parts thrown in, but the finish; that last song. Beautifully sung, fantastic lyrics, very poignant, wonderfully shot. The quick cut to young Dewey at the end as the camera pans is one of the best edited scenes ever. For what it is and what it's supposed to be, it's perfect. In two days, it will be three years since I lost my bride. I always loved this song, but it means so much more now. I tear up a bit every time I hear it and I'm not afraid to admit that I'm crying while I type this. Miss you, Donna Lou, more than you can imagine.
