  • I just bought a 2019 Subaru Ascent (Premium) and thought I would do a customer review. I love the car but there are a few things that could be better.
    Pros:
    Tows 5,000 lbs
Seats 8 people (5 comfortable and the a small back row)
Smooth ride and good acceleration for an SUV
    Perfect sized touch screen
Built in sun screens for the second row
All weather floor mats fit perfectly and are durable
Roomy front seats and second row seats
    Cons:
The digital speedometer doesn't match the gauge speedometer.
The cup holders are too big for a standard cup.
    Ascent Build:
    Premium in Abyss Blue Pearl
    All Weather Floor Mats
    Second Row Sun Shades
    Third Row Sun Shades
    Tow Hitch

Great video! Thanks for going over the towing hitch details. This will be my 5th Subaru next year to buy as a lease return! As a landscape contractor, I will use it occasionally for my business!👍

I’ve had myn for 3 months and absolutely it is the best suv I have bought. I checked out all of the competition and this was the clear winner. Have to say the eye sight feature that drives itself is so amazing, I went for a 4 hour camping trip and that auto steer is a game changer

Very good review. I like these types of honest reviews by normal people (like myself). I watch reviews done by bunch of auto journolists, but they get paid and don't nearly use the car as all of us (average consumers) would use.
Anyway, good job. I am thinking about getting one of these.

Good review. I’ve had my Ascent Touring since August and love it. I have the captains chairs in the second row which make it way more comfortable for adults to sit in the third row Thanks for showing the tow hitch cover , you have been the only review I have seen that shows how it goes back on.

Yvonne killa I did have issues with the radio. But Subaru stood behind their product, and the dealer replaced the infotainment system after two updates did not fix the problem. I have also discovered I need to use a brand name charging cord for Apple play to work properly. And not sure why, but if it is acting up I only have to take out the charging cord from my phone, turn it once and reinsert and it works fine.

You should be able to change the display in the middle of your instrument cluster where you have the digital speedometer. My Outback has up and down arrows on the steering wheel that allow to change what displays while driving.
    Glad you like your Ascent.

I like the Video great break down of the Good and Bad of the Ascent. I drive a 2012 Subaru Outback and for me this is big, but when I sat in the Ascent I had only one Complaint is that the Driver Seat didn’t go down into the floor like my outback. So being 6’2 I had not very much Head room😔. But over all the Three Row SUV I’m looking at Subaru Ascent is on the bottom of my list for now but I mite consider it anyways for purchase down the Road.

Good review. I'm leasing a 2019 Subaru Ascent premium and yes the cup holders suck! I've called Subaru people about fixing it and they just don't seem to care. Another weird thing about the driver seat is this..... When I get into the car the seat feels a little off. I told my roomate when you get in the car sit in the driver seat. He did and said "so what's the problem?" I said..."OK, scoot over about an inch closer to the console." He goes, "I see what you're saying." I know just a weird little thing but try it. I think it's kind of what you said. It's probably set up for a larger driver. Anyway I'm just leasing the Ascent. I own a 4Runner which I love. We love all of our Subaru's and Toyota's. Oh I almost forgot.....on the info screen my gas mileage says I'm getting anywhere from 6.2 miles to the gallon to 99.9 miles to the gallon WTH is that all about????

We have it too and it's my wife's car. I didn't really like the shape but she liked it so we got it, I'll admit that car floats, it's a really nice ride. I test drove the Telluride (too sporty) yes for me that's a bad thing, after a while that ride gets uncomfortable. I also test drove the Palisade and that ride just fell short, it just felt off somehow, really nice interior. This Ascent just has a really nice ride and holds it's resale value better than those other two, yes next to Toyota, Subaru holds it's value best. Anyhow, my wife and I are both over 50 so maybe that's why that ride was a priority for us.

Dude! I'm also in Dallas, and have this exact model Subaru, even in the same color. Got mine at Randall Noe in Terrell (where I'm at). I'd add a couple of Cons though. I've had mine since July of last year and can say I'm not as happy as I"d hoped I'd be. For the Cons, (I'm 6' with a large build), the steering wheel is a little small, and the arm rests are not in a comfortable spot for someone my height. I had to add pads I got from Amazon to get my arms to comfortably rest on them. Another is the Android Auto only works when you plug the phone directly into the car, using one of the USB ports. It's also the only way to get Navigation on the Premium model. Yet another is that the Eyesight system works MOST of the time, but not all the time. And I"m not talking about in heavy rain or fog, but in traffic. I've had the cruise control set for highway use, and while coming to a stop for traffic slowdowns, I've changed lanes and the car immediately accelerates back towards the speed I set it at. This has nearly caused and accident a few times. This has also caused me to nearly panic brake when it failed to recognize the fact the car ahead was slowing or stopping. Likewise, it's randomly accelerated when driving behind a vehicle that I've been behind for a couple of miles. And, the gauge speedometer does seem to be a couple of miles off whether you're on cruise, or not. And it seems like nit-picking, but the only way to get Wifi is to subscribe to a service offered by AT&T. And it ain't cheap. Other than that, it's a great car with decent features and loads of cargo space with the 3rd row of seats up and especially with them down. I do totally agree with the size of the main front cup holders (also with the who cares about 19 cupholders?) being too big for a normal size cup. I had to add some rubber cup holders to one so I could fit a normal cup in it. And for anyone considering this, or about to buy, be sure to get the weather guard floor mats as well as the back seat mats and cargo floor mat.

nice car. we ended up going with a used explorer in lieu of a new ascent though. was feeling skeptical about the CVT/2.4 but maybe next time. also, the explorer does have option for the large screen, leather etc we paid about 26k for a used low mileage explorer that added the nav/remote start/4wd. the ascent def feels more roomy though. i hope they do a 6cyl someday and traditional transmission

I've noticed the speedometer thing too. It's because of the angle that you are looking at it. If you move to the right to look straight at it then it's the same, at least in mine. Otherwise it's a bit off. And one thing I don't like is the little light in the cargo area that is down low. It doesn't light up as much as an overhead one and gets easily blocked by stuff.

    • @CenCalBimat
      @CenCalBimat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I realize this is 3 years late, but check our Subispeed! They have a light that mounts in the hatch so it really lights up the back and outside area when opened. It looks a little complicated to install, but it’s only $60!

Good review. I've got a few issues. The price point for the Touring is a bit high for the features. I think you have the Premium which is probably the best value. I have the same "likes". My dislikes are as follows: 1) Base model should have blind spot monitoring as an option, versus paying and $3K+ to get that in the Premium level. 2) You should have the option for a bench seat on the higher trim levels; 3) Power folding side mirrors - I drive into the cities around me a lot and parking this can be a challenge, especially in garages. 4) Lastly, the top line trim levels should have the Drive Selection option (to include snow mode) like on the Forester. Again, the Premium level is the sweet spot for this SUV. I just think there's not enough amenities in the higher trims to justify the higher prices.

We bought a 2019 Ascent new with a factory 100K warranty.
The bad; The windshield quality is terrible and chips, pits and cracks at the slightest road debris. The factory tires are flat prone.. 5 flats in 35K miles and zero flats in next 35K after replacing tires with Cooper tires. The combination of turbo lag and a CVT transmission that won't downshift when you accelerate causes a huge bog and then just as the turbo boost starts to catch up it downshifts one or two gears it lurches forward. It's unpredictable and annoying and causes torque steer which could get an inexperienced driver in trouble especially on wet or slick roads. The rear brake rotors warped after the first hard stop around 20K miles. It took a combined 2 years to get a fuel pump recall and a CVT recall addressed. We have had an exhaust leak at the manifold that is not covered under the warranty... In fact it seems all the common problems are excluded from the warranty and the dealers don't have the parts to fix most problems. Next week I will be replacing $12 exhaust gaskets that the dealer wanted $600 to replace (not covered by warranty even though it affects emissions) 22mpg average commuting 80% highway driving.
The good: my wife likes it
Don't waste your money on the factory extended warranty, Suburu will figure out a way to deny or delay any repairs under warranty. So far not one problem has been covered.
This is my 3rd Suburu and also my last Suburu. Their good ratings are from a bygone era.

Jay G. I do agree that most of the highlander models had a (Buick) ride, that’s why I opted for the sport model. The sport has tighter suspension, large sway bars, and 19”(vs18”) wheels with a shorter sidewall and overall more sporty feel.
As far as the engine goes- I’ve learned there’s nothing wrong with an older, but proven, engine. With the start stop, and the ability to shut it off, (I believe the ascent you can’t?), that adds fuel economy and value.
With regards to your all wheel drive comment: Subaru does have great awd. So does Toyota. I’ve also learned (living in New England and the south) that the tires are the majority of the equation for traction. I’ve seen Subaru’s with bad/worn tires not able to do what a little fwd car with the correct tires can do. Also, you’re in TX, I’m sure you don’t even need (or know much about) awd.
I know my Toyota’s and Subaru’s probably just as good as you too, I worked for Subaru and Toyota, as well as owner both brands to boot.
My point is they are both excellent 3row suvs- but my money is on the 2.4turbo, cvt, and interior having reliability issues

I would absolutely buy this car next; however, the oil filters are terribly made and I'm skeptical about the reliability of these in the long run. On the other hand I follow the severe maintenance schedule almost all the time so I believe I could make it last a very long time. I absolutely HATE the highly reflective interior. I love the interior of my 2011 legacy 3.6r limited because it is so well made (I did not care about soft touch doors because who rests their arms on that part) I much rather have something durable than plush. I refuse to buy a truck even though I plan to do outdoor type activities mainly cause of the cost to own them. I drive tons of highway but I NEED the capabilities of AWD or 4WD because of what I do. I have never had issues in snow with my legacy (seen at most 6in) but I have passed well respected suvs on back roads that had gotten stuck while my CAR prevailed. My car is going on 8 years now with almost 90k miles and have never had an issue. I have yet to even replace the brake pads and I have had it for 3 years and have put 50k miles on it. DO NOT BUY THE BLUE OIL FILTERS THEY PUT IN THESE CARS. They are super small, and made from fibrous paper material. I highly recommend either ordering a WIX XP, Purolator Boss or Bosh premium oil filters for our subarus. The oil is the life of your car and if you want your 30k-50k vehicle to last, buy quality replacement parts. Link to filters and how they are constructed: th-cam.com/video/18ctlBsRcGs/w-d-xo.html

still waiting to hear back from Subaru as to if they will honor & fix this bad paint job!!??? 5th time my new car will be in the shop !!

    So far, pretty disappointed !!

My sister has a 2015 Honda CRV that has been in the shop over 5 times and now the trim is falling off and they won’t fix it under warranty.

Gemster18 the Explorer is a good vehicle, be honest. If it weren't it wouldn't still be around and there's TONS of them on the road. Even the 90s ones are still running strong around where I live. I would only get Ford SUVs or trucks. With Subaru all of their vehicles are good. I think you get them cause they're usually more affordable and they're hands down better than most in snow. They are usually underpowered though by 30-50 hp. I do think the host didn't consider the Ascent is brand new compared to the Explorer which is a 8/9 year old vehicle. I don't anyone should choose a model that's ready to get a major overhaul which is going on now.

don't purchase this Truck. Don't get me wrong I use to live for the motto "love its what makes Subaru" but it should be more like "Subaru we will not be held responsible" I purchased the ascent Last year and already we have gotten the rotors replaced, and the brake pads we have had to take it in for electrical malfunctions with the radio and sounds, cosmetically we have had to take it in because one of the handles on the car doors was not properly assembled, that should have been huge warning signs. WELL THE CHERRY on the top of this terrible cake is that we took it to La Jolla we paralleled parked on a nice street and left! We enjoyed our evening, but when we came back to leave the wheels wouldn't turn, we thought something must have been in the way, well I got off of the passenger side and circled the truck making sure that nothing was hindering the truck was turning or moving. NOTHING WAS IN THE WAY, I stood on the side walk and asked my husband to turn the wheel, and when he did that was a noise that came from the inside, he asked me if everything was good, and I thought it was, the left wheel finally turned perpendicular and I told him to move forward, but when he did I didn't check the right wheel and because it was still pointed at an angle when he pushed the gas the truck slid. We didn't even move 2 feet before we called the towing company and had the truck towed. The next day they examined the truck and said our warranty wouldn't cover it because we had damaged the truck. We had no fault in the failure of the disengagement of the steering rack system. The suspension was hurt because of the friction of the one wheel being at an angle. THIS IS A NEW TRUCK, its a Subaru! we loved the truck despite its many failures. We reasoned with the ass for an hour and he still blamed us. We called Subaru of America and they said they would get a second opinion. EVEN IF WE WERE TO PAY FOR THEM TO FIX IT ALL THIS WOULD CERTAINLY HAPPEN AGAIN BECAUSE WE CAN NOT MANUALLY OR EXTERNALLY CAUSE THE STEERING TO LOCK AND NOT DISENGAGE!! I can not tell you now how unsafe I feel in this Truck, I will be making a WHOLE dedicated video on my channel. I will not be silenced on this, they could potentially put people in danger for their failure to acknowledge the trucks failures. IF you had in mind of buying one of these DON'T get the MDX its up there in price, but the bugs have been fixed and you don't have to worry about the company not taking action on their faulty vehicles. I have a Subaru 2019 ascent its a lemon. I purchased it for 51,000 dollars, I will be selling this piece of shit for 37,258.15. IT IS BY FAR THE WORST TRUCK I have ever owned and I've owned Toyotas, Nissans and tundras, we had a rubicon and it was a dream, this is a solid nightmare. @subaru TAKE responsibility for your trucks failures.
