I bought this bike 5 months ago from the person you sold it to a couple of years ago. It was described to me as being a nut and bolt restoration when he bought it. I do not know if he was naive as he described in his ad, in the same way he purchased it from you I was told. Maybe you both were naive. After receiving the bike it was clearly apparent this was not the bike I purchased as described in his ad. I also note in your TH-cam review the previous owners effort of undertaking restoration. I have been restoring these particular airhead models for 20 years to a very high quality standard. The bike I received had been what I would describe as a tart up job. Seat not secured, no seat brackets fitted. Incorrect seat for the bike. Rusty main frame touched up with a brush, front and rear wheel bearings rusted by someone water or soda blasting the wheels hubs without removing or protecting them. Front brake master cylinder leaking, paint touched up to hide the damaged paint. Brake lines replaced with a stupid dual line from the master cylinder to the brake calipers. Ignition Coils moved forwards to allow fitting of the ignition black box to be mounted behind them. This causing the bike to stall due to the coils rubbing on the tank.I note in an invoice from a so called Sydney bmw expert, the owner mentions in it a rattle coming from under the tank. Their fix was to wrap the coils in cutdown foam stubbie holders. No idea. To remove the rear wheel had to cut off the left rear wheel bearing.Visual scoring on axle where the axle was hammered in. Incorrect wheel bearings fitted. Hazard wiring loom had removed by chopping off the loom where it enters the main wiring loom, and wires left bare. There are heaps more faults I can list. I have pulled the bike apart, and am currently completing a proper restoration on it. My word of advice when buying a airhead era bike is to be educated in them before spending your money. If I had the opportunity to see the bike before purchasing (not just pictures), I would have walked away. When I have finished the bike it will be properly restored.
Sad to hear your not enjoying the bike! I miss this bike terribly and sold it only as I had a young family. I’d actually love to buy the bike back at some point. The bike was never a professional resto. It was an engine out home restoration by an enthusiast. It was never “perfect”, and never put forward as being such. I’d suggest that if you had spent as much time organising a PPI as you did commenting on the internet, you’d have had a more realistic picture of the bike and not gone in “naive”. Regardless of my complete lack of involvement in your purchase (I haven’t owned this bike in years), I look forward to seeing the bike have even more love put in, and excited to hopefully have it back in my life one day!
Thanks for posting this vid. I'm looking to get back on the saddle after 6 years. I've had an R65, Triumph T100 and an R1150RT. Looking at something with a bit of age for historic plates so this bike seems to fit the criteria like a glove.....and so the hunt begins.
Nice bike!!! BACK IN 1995 I BOUGHT A 1978 BMW R80\7, FACTORY BROWN with YELLOW PINSTRIPE!! ThE SPORT SHELD and BMW REAR BAGS!!! NICE CLEAN BIKE!!! HAD A CARRY RACK!!!!! LOW BARS!!! I RODE HER FOR 3 YEARS!!!! NO PROBLEM!!!! IM LOOKING FOR ONE NOW!!! I WOULD LIKE A R100 S!!!!!!! ENJOYED YOUR FILM!!!IA GOOD FRIEND OF MINE LIVES OUTSIDE OF BENDOC AUSTRALIA!!! RIDES A BMW VINTAGE BIkE!!!!!
Because it used to be an RT, it probably still has the RT final drive ratio Try exchanging the fd with one from an R80 or R80/7, so then you have longer gears
Nice, what handlebars do you have fitted, I have just got hold of a 78 R80 and in the process of tidying it up, mine currently has high bars that are awful.
Lucas classic low. If you lower the bars, you’ll need to lower the clocks too or it just looks weird. Caferacer make an ultra low bracket for the original clocks.
Did the /7 style seat go on easily or were there any modifications you had to make? Great sound, old beemers are awesome, couldn’t really let my old ’85 r80 go if I wanted!
@@classicbikeenthusiast3595 didn’t mean to hurt your pride. But an elderly bmw mechanic taught me finally how to ride a vintage bmw. Those are high rev motors and the whole dynamic of power and balance power is incredible once you find that sweet spot. Or remember going 70 in high rev and the motor felt like it was going to lift me off the ground and fly until a Tesla over took me thankfully.
I just grabbed an 81 R100 and absolutely love it. great vid

Hi. Love the bike. I have a very similar bike. What mudguard is that? Mine seems to be longer

It’s an aftermarket one made for this year. Went in easy.
@@classicbikeenthusiast3595 what is the brand of the replacement seat? Or could you share a link? Hoping they do a monolever version :)
I’ve been rebuilding a r90 for the past year. Still have a head oil leak to fix.
Rev that engine to 5-6 k in gear. Shifting less .
Whats the price for a decent r80/7 outside of germany ?
Nice.
Lovely bike, what kind of km/l are you getting on it?
No idea. Hahaha. Not good though I’m sure.
I have the slightly bigger R90/6. I get around 7l/100km. With spirited riding, the consumption increases haha.
Pearler!
the Bike sounds like way to lean !
As far as the mufflers ah a fancier noise ?
Buy a Harley Lol .
Any other advice, or just “rev your bike like me and buy a Harley?” Let me know if it is not your favourite colour too and I’ll be sure to repaint it.
