The costumes and flag were already a lot but the Hitler hand sign just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The song is fucking great, just like the whole album. I think it’s more like extreme radical performative art than offensive, or at least that was the intent. ( not saying it can’t be taken offensively , given the history ) but since the lyrics are anti-war, I do believe the intent was to make one uncomfortable or queasy with its imagery. Similar to movies that deal with the topic.
This is not really the nazi salute per se, the Japanese used it like the Romans did in Ancient Rome. That's basically how the Japanese soldiers saluted the Emperor, shouting "Hirohito banzai!" (long live the Emperor!). The military uniform the members are wearing is actually the uniform of the Japanese army, and the flag that Yu~ki is waving is the Japanese flag, the flag of the rising sun (not that it's much better, mind you). And yes, it's really tacky. That being said, Cantavanda is right. A lot of Japanese people don't know much about the nazis. For them, they were just some "bad guys" who did some "bad stuff" in Europe during WWII. For them, Hitler was a bit like a cartoon villain, a crazy short guy with a mustache, a lunatic who screamed a lot. And that's pretty much it. That's why the Japanese don't see anything wrong with nazi imagery. That's why you will often see Hitler in manga and animation. That's why Sugizo used to wear a swastika and a nazi uniform on stage in the 90s, just because he thought that it looked "cool". Sheer ignorance, even if it's hard to believe for us, Westerners. Thank god, things are changing a little, but there's still a long way to go.

I mean, it’s par for the course for a highly refined studio band to be a lot weaker live. And the earlier eras didn’t sound that “manufactured”, so they probably became too fancy in the studio to be able to pull it off live. Because it's a protest song, like how movies about war show things, they are showing in that kinda way and not like those kpop idols who wear clothes with those symbols without knowing the meaning.
Long time MM fan here and honestly its kinda shitty they cosplayed as nazis and waved around fascist Japan's flag. Very unfortunate. You could say the lyrics are about the brainwashing of imperial japan, but its too ambiguous and ultimately too e d g y and ultimately corny lol still love MM tho
i agree, i don’t think they had to go that far, their more recent version of it for the 25th anniversary shows a better performance without all of this stuff…, but it’s their pretrial of n.p.s.n.g.s, rather painting imperial japan of blame. every japanese person was being brainwashed (as u said) to think japan was gonna win the war, but of course, they did not. i honestly thought it would be cool if they just burned the flag on stage and would make a better shock value bc n.p.s.n.g.s is definitely the best song to hear being performed live. it’s weird tho bc when i first watched this, i never understood why no one talked abt the fact they were waving around the rising sun flag, something that gives people horrible memories of what imperial japan did, but i guess that’s mm for you, and no one thought too much of it. the lyrics definitely counteract what they are displaying on stage, so maybe that’s what they were trying to go for, who really knows. and making kami slowly dying near the end is just kind of poking at japan making all these people die in a war that japan knew they weren’t gonna win, while shouting “die game” a double meaning phrase depending on how you interpret it.
This is a subject that deserves to be better understood than saying that one or the other is n**i or fascists. Many vk bands have at one time used n**i outfits (malice mizer wore JAPANESE ARMY WW2 uniforms) or n**i symbols, but at no point was it appreciating the n**i and yes to shock or purely for the look . Something similar happened both in the US with some punks in the 70s and in England in the late 60s. I don't want to relativize this subject, but as I said at the beginning, we have to be very careful not to judge wrong.
@@mrzagalia it is not just for shock, but due to the fact that japan was allied with the nazis, a lot of their horrors didn't reach japan and therefore they are more tolerant and some even praise the nazis (not in a racist way but out of respect and for thinking hitler was cool, cus believe it or not hitler made it so Germany was the first country to exit the great depression by re-arming Germany and building better infrastructures)

it’s preformance art. it’s meant to make you feel something. the disgusted feeling you feel when you see that salute, is what they wanted you to feel. and means you’re a decent human. but, if you’re not brutally reminded of what exactly facism and war is, you will forget the seriousness. since you brought up s3xual themes in their other song, i’m going to assume you’re young (which there is nothing wrong with), so you may not understand this, which i understand because when i was younger i also thought things like these were unacceptable no matter the context. it is a complex subject.

i agree, i don’t think they had to go that far, their more recent version of it for the 25th anniversary shows a better performance without all of this stuff…, but it’s their pretrial of n.p.s.n.g.s, rather painting imperial japan of blame. every japanese person was being brainwashed (as u said) to think japan was gonna win the war, but of course, they did not. i honestly thought it would be cool if they just burned the flag on stage and would make a better shock value bc n.p.s.n.g.s is definitely the best song to hear being performed live. it’s weird tho bc when i first watched this, i never understood why no one talked abt the fact they were waving around the rising sun flag, something that gives people horrible memories of what imperial japan did, but i guess that’s mm for you, and no one thought too much of it. the lyrics definitely counteract what they are displaying on stage, so maybe that’s what they were trying to go for, who really knows. and making kami slowly dying near the end is just kind of poking at japan making all these people die in a war that japan knew they weren’t gonna win, while shouting “die game” a double meaning phrase depending on how you interpret it.
Its not ambiguous if you speak the language is it
This is a subject that deserves to be better understood than saying that one or the other is n**i or fascists.
Soft pussay boi
I’m not what you call a “Fan” of malice Mizer, but I do listen and vibe to some of the songs. I get it, this is an anti-war performance, and I do get that WWII is seen VERY different in Japan than it is here, but honestly this aged like milk. I do get they’re trying to get the message that war is wrong, but they rlly didn’t have to do the n@z1 salute, it leaves a very bad taste for me, and I rlly wish they didn’t do it, if they were going to make N-P-S-N-G-N-S an anti-war story, they shouldn’t have cut it out, this is also one of the reasons why I don’t rlly consider myself a fan (right next to Gackt, and how provocative Illuminati was), the idea of making a song/performance on how bad the war is was such a good idea, they just shouldn’t have done that salute… :(
it’s preformance art. it’s meant to make you feel something. the disgusted feeling you feel when you see that salute, is what they wanted you to feel. and means you’re a decent human. but, if you’re not brutally reminded of what exactly facism and war is, you will forget the seriousness. since you brought up s3xual themes in their other song, i’m going to assume you’re young (which there is nothing wrong with), so you may not understand this, which i understand because when i was younger i also thought things like these were unacceptable no matter the context. it is a complex subject.
Eesh
