    I heard that ants will fight based on scent. If an ant doesn't have the colony scent they kill it.
    So it's really interesting to see them accept pupae from a different colony.

      Yeah, at least the guy on the their channel proves they actually test their products before they go on the shelves. He even uses his fire ant colony, a species know for their escaping abilities, to test and make sure the products are durable.

      I know this comment is pretty old but... Ants Canada is far too expensive. Especially when you live in the UK and there is like £80 shipping. I would love an ants Canada setup but its just far too expensive mostly because of shipping and the actual formicariums and outworlds are very pricey!

    I also accidentally took 2 male larvae and a princess larva, all of which have now hatched. One of the males did fly out of the outworld, so I now keep the lid on. They won't do any nuptial flights though, so they'll either die or just help out in the nest like workers. Or possibly mate within the nest.

    Hi Rebecca, I love your videos, I own a 14 week old leopard gecko, 2 ant colonies and 1 cat. I was wondering If you would be interesting in buying another colony, I recommend messor barbarous as they are good starter ants and are sold on antkit, they have major ants which are slightly bigger than workers and break down seeds that you feed them with their jaws, the workers then eat the mush. You can also get a sample bag of seeds from antkit which is free, and £1 200g bags of seeds. A lot has happened, thanks for the tip about the connector, I'm a novice too but you can still ask me for help.

    having fliers in a colony that young would be a terrible strain on their food supply in the wild so they will probably end up killing them off and using them as food. shouldn't hurt the nest. the worst thing of brood boosting is the possibility of bringing in parasites.

    I know out of your kind heat you moved those pupa into your colony, if you ever watch ants Canada, he says himself you could start ant ant war doing this. If any of those other pupas hatch and goes unnoticed it could potentially kill your workers and even the queen! Anyways great vid... These are so exciting !

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually watched an antscanada just after I put them in, and he said about brood boosting, saying its fine if they're the same species. However at the time I had no clue they were males, thankfully the workers are sorting everything out. It's good to see how well they protect their queen :) Thanks :)

    • @kidthebilly7766
      @kidthebilly7766 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have to find a queen, set up a test tube nest (tutorials online)
      and then use a heat mat to create a comfortable setting for the queen
      then the queen will lay eggs
      the workers will be born
      then add on to the test tube with different tubes connecting to different areas

    The workers can tell very easily if a pupae is damaged and they will kill it and feed it to their larvae, this is what happened when the worker removed the head of the virgin queen. The big pupae are alates (males and queens) and the smaller ones are workers. It looks like you damaged a lot of the pupae so I'm not sure if you are going to get any health ants from the pupae.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it was a virgin queen, almost certain it was a male, because the queens are larger and come in bigger cocoons. The other pupae are totally fine, they may look kind of dark in the thumbnail but I think that's just the photo because in reality they look like normal, but thank you anyway :)

    • @mdrogun
      @mdrogun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leopard Gecko with most pupae it is impossible to tell whether or not you damaged them. It doesn't matter if it was a queen or a male what I was talking about would still hold up.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diego's toe bled a tiny bit once because his nail came out, it soon scabbed over, and the nail grew back pretty quickly. Just make sure its kept clean. Do just wipe it with a q-tip/cotton bud once a day until you see that it has scabbed over. If it does look like its going bad, or its leaking something, you may want to seek some veterinary advice :)

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't yet since the colony is still too small. The ytong nest is for colonies with 200-400 workers, and if you move them in too early, when they're too small, the workers stray off, they store most of their rubbish in the ytong area, just overall its a no-no, unless you have a tiny ytong suitable for a small colony :)
