Yes the thrown around 10 min ab routines are mostly bs, but i also think saying that your abs will only be visible if you lose belly fat so don't train them is so oversimplistic. Imagine saying your quads will only be visible if you lose fat so don't train them. The problem is that people look at ab training differently than other muscle groups for some reason. They do these inefficient 10 minute supersets with no rest in between instead of progressively overloading their abs with rest time in between sets of 10-20 reps like any other muscle group. Plus, core training has several benefits for your other exercises, mainly squats and deadlifts, and your posterior chain in general.
Hey JC, to be clear I completely agree with you. I'm not saying don't train the abs! I do 2-3 ab exercises as part of a structured training plan, rather than lengthy follow-along ab workouts. Apply progressive overload on them as normal and they grow like you say. The point was that spending 30 mins on them is a waste of time, I wasn't saying don't train them at all 👍
