    Awesome timing. I have a 4hp Evinrude 4hp (1986 but not the deluxe) with the stuck driveshaft I’ll be working on this weekend! Managed to get it apart after soaking for weeks but camshaft needs changing (driveshaft OK). Torque wrench in hand ready for the changeover (got a cheap cam shaft). Then probably service as per your video. Thanks 👍

    Just did the water pump on a 4HP deluxe from 1986. After doing the water pump and head gasket it’s a great runner. Both cylinders have 110 psi. Original head gasket was sort of a red rubber ish look. New one was carbon and thinner.

    Belgian deluxe power! Love my little 1988 Evinrude 4 deluxe. Even added the optional OMC charging kit! Have spent many hours using it on my little square stern canoe.

      Only real weak point with these is the starter. Not exactly the best design choice.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean, the worst pull starter you'll find?
      Its only one step about the 19030's engines, that you just wrapped a rope around and pulled.

    I have two of these little beasties that will be heading for the workbench sometime soon. The shed they are in is ready to fall over so I'm claiming them for video content.

    So many times we hear nothing but perfection from people about these motors - but your experience and knowledge tells more truth.

      Compared to motors from the 2000’s they are perfect! A motor that lasts 50 or 60 years has long been gone , you’d be lucky to get 15 years out of a new motor !

    I just took mine apart tonight for a water pump rebuild but the drive shaft is stuck like you said. I was hoping yours was stuck too,{ selfish I know}, so I could see what your solution is. I thought about vice grips and tapping it out but I don't want to mark up the shaft. Any suggestions? Thanks , love your vids.

    Must be to hot to be outside down there ! Don’t ya love the sound those little ones make , I do ! I have a 6hp late 80’s LS that sounds and runs so nicely I hate to sell so I over priced it ! Lol

      Thats the way to do it.
      Someday it'll sell, and you'll enjoy the money and be sad your engine is gone all at the same time.

    Just randomly ran across this video and I have a 6 hp Johnson 1984 hanging from my ceiling by the driveshaft and I can’t figure out why that Fricker won’t come out of a powerhead. Now I know. It’s been driving me crazy for three days. What do I do?

    I have a 1990 4.0 deluxe johnson. I am unfamiliar with the motor and cannot find an owner's manual - operator's manual. So, what are the functions of the two controls on the front of the motor just to the left of the pull cord as you face the motor? The one to the far left would be the choke but, what's the dial type control? How are those controls used?

    I have the same motor. I replaced the impeller and it is pumping water now via a test by attaching a hand drill to the shaft and running it while submerged.
    The issue now is…the shift rod came out. The gearbox is now engaged and I cannot fully reinsert the shift rod into the unit by about a half inch. How do I reinstall it?

    Your lucky living in the United States to get outboard motors so cheap. Not the case in Canada for used ones or classed as a parts motor.

    I own a primo ( literally new condition) 1980 evinrude deluxe 4.5 hp. A family member bought it new. Probably has no more than ten or twelve hours run time on it and it has sat inside bout near ever since. Its a smooth runner and it runs correctly. I’m gonna use it this summer on my old 1971 Sears 14’ v type fishing boat. It pushes the boat at 9mph. Is there anyway to get a little more speed out of this motor? I like little boats and motors and this one runs nicely and looks brand new to boot but it sure would be nice to pep it up a bit and maybe get 14-15 mph out if it with my lightweight boat. Is that possible with a carb change maybe by installing a 7.5hp carb from the same block size family of engines?

    Great video!
    If you're able to share; is there an online source for parts (that after the user selects year/make/model), that would show a diagram/parts list? (Similar to the way that you can purchase vehicle/atv parts)
    Thanks!

    I notice when you’re running you’re outboard in the tank the water looks to stay clean? I ran my old 74 model 6 hp Johnson and the water got oily real quick does that mean I have a bad seal? I haven’t changed the water pump yet just got this motor but it’s spraying water good

    On the driveshaft splines that go into the powerhead, don't use grease on the splines, use Neversieze.

    When you inspected the water pump and you said it looked like it had been run dry several times what were you looking at? Is there substantial wear on that paddle that would cause it not to push water??

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Several? I said seconds.
      Anywho, picture dragging a piece of rubber across something for a while - you'll get smooth flat spots where the rubber is wearing away.

    so what's a scrap value for these? A resale value? I see them on FB market place in "it ran last time I put it away" condition, in $150-$400 range depending on time of the year for a 4 HP in my area. So at the min $100 - $150 in service parts but could be more if something is busted.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scrap value, figure you might be getting $0.08 a pound, so $8ish?
      And yeah, when this is all fixed Ill probably have $200± in parts into it; and thats the basic stuff.

      @@BrandonsGarage I'm still thinking pre-Bidon prices...everything more expensive for parts now. I fully rebuilt a 1986 Mariner 2HP I got for free (submerged)..it was only $100 in parts to get it going 4 years ago...
