Outstanding selections Jon. This only reaffirms my respect that I have always had for your tastes in artists. Any type of folk music was never a part of my musical upbringing. But as you get older you learn to appreciate the genre a little more. I do have two of those albums. You can probably guess which ones they are. The more popular names. I was listening to Veckatimest about three months ago. I am sure that you know the album was named after a place here in Taxachusetts. The first time I heard Two Weeks I immediately thought of one of my all time favorite American bands The Beach Boys. Stoked that you loved their live show. Anyways. Thank you Jon. It has been raining here overnight. Long overdue rain even though I am not a fan. Thank you for shedding a little sun/brightening up my morning~ Rob/Boston
Grizzly Bear definitely brought The Beach Boys harmonies on Two Weeks. Other songs of theirs too. Fleet Foxes as well at times. Yes, Veckatimest Island. I knew it was somewhere on the New England coast. I didn’t say it exactly correct. I think it’s more like Ve-KAH-tim-est, right? That’s a brilliant album whichever way it’s pronounced. It’s been a long and wild storm season. Crazy stuff happening on the West Coast. I guess the snow is piling up now? I haven’t looked at the weather up your way, Rob. Stay warm! As always, great to hear from you. Cheers ✌🏻
Great "Gimme Ten"! My favorites lists are the ones where there is overlap; common titles that are in my collection and another half I've never heard of...this expands my musical horizons and is why I watch. Shout out to The Long Cut channel where this happens for me as well. I totally agree that Our Endless Numbered Days and Women King were peak Iron & Wine for me; I own them both on vinyl and caught them live around that time. Cheers!
I wasn’t able to catch them in the earlier years. Finally saw them in 2011 for the first time. That was when he had the huge band. Not my favorite material. I finally saw him solo in 2022. At Red Rocks. It was glorious. The best way to see Iron & Wine/Sam Beam imo. Cheers! ✌🏻
Great List! Here are a few more suggestions in no particular order. 1. Richard Buckner: Bloomed 2. Meg Baird: Furling 3. Josephine Foster: Hazel Eyes I Will Lead You 4. Jim O'Rourke: Bad Timing 5. Gillian Welch: Time the Revelator 6. Akron/Family: Love is Simple 7. Innocence Mission: Birds of My Neighborhood 8. Varnaline: Songs in a Northern Key 9. Elliott Smith: Elliott Smith 10. Jens Lekman: Night Falls Over Kortedala
It’s a favorite of mine, too, Chris. Especially when I don’t participate, because that means I’m learning something from others instead. 😁 I have an idea for another one but it’s not based on genre. I’ll get around to it eventually. Cheers! ✌🏻
Loving this G10, Jon. I like that you've brought in the early 00s kind of precursors like Cat Power, Early Sufjan and Califone, thru to the (personal) big hitters like Van Occupanther and Fleet Foxes, and onto the latter era stuff like Middle East (just as the indie folk world went all overground and Mumford). Glad to see the love for the EP - done right and they can end up a critical release in an artists catalogue. Given that, I need to go listen to Woman King, new to me. Very grateful you sent me that megafaun album bury the square, can totally see why the band is included here as a leading light. Great video sir!
Saying Johanna Newsome has a unique voice is putting it mildly. I bought one of her more recent albums and it was sooooo out there. I remember when the one you showed came out and it was highly praised How is Dean doing, I really miss him. I do have Fleet Foxes, so I guess I’m into Indie Folk. I also have that Grizzly Bear album. I need to revisit these Jon as I seem to be missing something from them. Wow, you have made a lot of videos lately! Well done. Always a pleasure
Dean is great. I won’t speak for him, though. I’ll let him respond. 😎 I’m making a lot of videos to keep myself distracted from the world burning down all around us. Love seeing all the recent-ish hiking photos, Steve. Your record is en route. Cheers ✌🏻
👋hey Steve! Going alright here, thanks, really nothing much to report! Love seeing you typically overachieving in 'retirement' - all while maintaining a podcast, moving to your new Colorado abode, with your ever expanding flock of grandkids. What a way to live a life - inspirational stuff🤩 have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Hi Lis! I think you’d like a lot of these Califone, Megafaun, Midlake… all have some psych/proggy vibes at times. I’ll be posting one more video before Thanksgiving. A fun one. 😎 Next Thursday and Friday are long days for us, but not complaining as it’s good to be with family. The food makes it all worthwhile! Hope you’re doing well as the weather gets colder. Thanks, sis! ☮️ 🦃 🥧 🌽
perhaps a response is in order. Showed a bunch here I love quite a bit. Stand by the Fleet Foxes albums, all 3 are great especially the last one. Though their next one could be the one that distances me. Though I said that about Shore. I'll have to look through that section and see what I come up with.
I always learn something from your lists Jon. I'm curious as too what makes something "Indie" and what makes it "folk"? Is there an "Alternative Folk" out there? These questions may keep me up tonight! Take care my friend.
The answer is - nothing. It’s all conversational, Elliott. Terminology used in popular culture, in comment sections, Reddit threads (god forbid you go there), and music reviews. Indie used to be an actual thing and that all got muddied as the ways music was consumed and distributed vastly changed. What makes something bluegrass vs. folk? What makes something country vs. country-rock? What makes something a great band vs. someone just being a great bandleader? 🤪 The lines have been blurred for years. It doesn’t matter. Just a way to talk about music we love. Don’t lose any sleep over it. Cheers ✌🏻
Thanks for sharing. I'll have to check out some of these bands I don't know. I saw Iron and Wine this last summer. It was a fantastic show! His current drummer/ percussionist is incredible! I'm wondering if you considered Calexico at all, or how would you classify them, genre-wise? They did a great EP with Iron and Wine that is as good as Woman King in my opinion.
Yeah… that’s where it gets all tricky (and kind of silly). In the broadest terms of folk, I’d throw Calexico in there. Americana. They’re one of those unclassifiable bands. I’ll more than likely lump them in with my Alt-Country videos when I get around to them. Even though, that isn’t really accurate either. That first collaboration between Calexico and Sam Beam was fantastic. Agreed. A 2000s classic. I wish I would’ve tried harder to catch them on that tour back then. Cheers! ✌🏻
I do have Ys, and a very good album. You are Free is a good album as well (and adore The Greatest). This period is a hole in my music knowledge since it was when we were forming our business so I had less ability to explore. Seven Swans - a good record but one I don't tend to pull (Age of Adz is my favorite).
@@dixielandfarm We saw him on the Age of Adz tour. Wild show. An album I like more now than I did back then. I was trapped in an “indie”-centric hole back in these years. I mean, I was still listening to a lot of different stuff, but everything new was culled from Pitchfork, Popmatters, Paste, etc. 🤓
Different Strokes For Different Folks. I think Chan peaked on The Greatest in 2006 .. That made my Top 10 & had such a vibe to it. It's a musicians record. Looking forward to Thanksgiving 🐓. November has been a folk this kind of month & perhaps a solid meal & wine & bourbon will help salvage it. RSD black Friday certainly won't. That whole day has really jumped the shark 🦈. Where will Soto go ?

@@soundofminder Not a list. A sub-genre overview. As I said in the beginning, these Gimme Tens go way back in the VC. You’ll get bored with “vinyl finds” videos soon enough. 🤣 The Greatest (2006) was the last Cat Power album I was passionate about. Cheers, Thijs! ✌🏻
