My Dad did sewing machine repairs and he loved Super Tech lubricant. He said to spray WD 40 on your finger and rub it and it will eventually dry up where as the Super Tech stays slick. So my opinion is that is is very good.
Judging by the wooden knob my guess would be Horrocks Ibboson in New York I seen another one of their early Reels with a very similar knob most likely a Trade Reel . That's my 2 cents Dennis.
Hello Dennis. From your description of the symbol looking like the pound sterling mark its likely a Pennell reel. Its a brand not a manufacturer. Probably made by Montague in Philadelphia.
Beautiful simple reel! Long way from a cane pole, sinew line, and bone hook. 😀
Ir sure is. Simple makes things complex! Thanks
Thankyou for sharing this reel with us.
You're welcome - Thanks for watching.

I think you are at least in the ballpark of being correct about maker. Possibly a knock off.
THanks - I will check that out
I've seen the pound sterling mark before on a reel made by Penell.

That is a remarkable reel.
