Cracking video that really enjoyed it. Still can't quote figure how you leave that loop to finish off the knots but would be handy if you could do a video of that. Just going to check out your other videos.

Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed and found it useful - and I'm pleased that you found the video that explained the knots/whipping better! Thanks again, Mick

Great this I've watched it numerous times, theres nothing I like better than a walk out over the fields with my lurchers cut a fork an sit an whittle it ,sometimes I get my spare band set out of my little carry bag and use it while out ,other times stick it in rucksack with my flask and bit of snap, for putting the final sanding an oiling when I get home.
Usually with a few pigeons or rabbit what ever I shoot or dogs see first.
It feeds me an me ferrets. 👍
    Brilliant.
Got a fork steaming now ,was abit wide ,,,I'll be able to squeeze them closer and wrap some cord round the forks till its drys in the airing cupboard.

I must confess, I had little interest in making a catapult, even when I was younger. But when I saw Mick Grewcock's name on the video, I was immediately fascinated. In the U.S., our most commonly used elastic was cut from a bicycle innertube; or perhaps one from a car tire. I think I may have some materials in my garage. And there's an ash tree I've been meaning to cut for a bow stave. Perhaps I'll examine it for suitable forks.

+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Hi Andy! Wow, you must be young ;-) I'm sixty in a few months and square elastic is all I ever knew when I was young. Not sure about this modern theraband malarkey!! Yes, a great hunting tool - I've raised young owls to adulthood fed entirely on a daily catapult harvest and kept hutches of ferrets happy too. What a great bit if kit and much fun making one again. Hope you are well up there. Cheers for now, Mick

      Haha, I'm good thanks Mick.
      Yeah, that's oldskool mate,
      but oldskools normally best.
I'm not too keen on the Theraband either. Flat bands are hard to bind, and if it's not cut perfectly straight, it just rips.
I'm 34, so I must of just missed the square band era lol.
My buddy's Dad was a doctor and he use to supply us with sergical tubing. Always did the job and knocked them Squirrels outa the trees.
      Cheers mate

+Clan Gunn Bushcraft Thirty-four, I remember that! Never tried binding surgical tubing or theraband for that matter, guess I ought to have a go to keep up with the young uns! Freezing like crazy here. Cheers, Mick

Good demonstration on the whipping Mick . Suggestion ? - A video on the sling and the history of slingers . England is full of those lovely black flint nodules which look like a potato on the outside and will absolutely smash an English oak 2" x 12" @ 30 yards . The coast at Sandwich and Dover is absolutely FULL of ammo . Dover castle and Churchill's secret command post are made from English black flint and mortar . Perfect for arrowhead knapping and gun flint and steel fire starting . Your winter is on the way my friend = Have you gathered thistle for cordage ? Stinging nettles are another story and don't miss them . Thanks for your video . Gathering Yucca fiber - counting rattle snakes and hammering out elk sinew .

Yucca fiber, rattle snakes, elk sinew - ohh, how I'd like to have a look at your world. Great idea on the slingers - but oh, so much to do and all on my own with my cameras and Ben! I need a film crew!! Enjoy. Mick

Great video but I'm struggling to grasp the loop of string and passing the end through it. Could we see exactly how you do that in a close up please?

    • @MickGrewcock
      @MickGrewcock  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+John Long Hi there, yes I can explain. The technique I use is called whipping. Imagine you want to whip a cord along the length of a pencil (i.e. to bind a piece of cord or string along the shaft of a pencil, or the fork of a catapult). Create a long loop that lies along the pencil. You have a 'free' end and the rest of the cord/string. At the opposite end to the loop, start to wrap (whip) the cord along the pencil toward the open loop. As you do so, the 'free' end is left at one end the pencil as you wrap the cord/string along the pencil toward the loop. When you get toward the end of the pencil, but before you've covered all the loop, you will have a loop sticking out the end of the whipping and the end of the cord that you've been wrapping around the pencil. This end you pass through the loop. At the other end of the pencil, you have the original 'free' end sticking out; pull on this, and you will gradually pull the loop under the whipping. This will trap the end of the cord underneath the whipping. When you've pulled the loop about half way under the whipping, stop pulling. Cut the free end, and you have a 'whipped' pencil - or catapult fork. When I get a moment, I'll do a quick video and post on this channel. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers for now, Mick

+John Long Hi John, no problem - weather/time permitting I will make a short video today showing you how to whip with cord. It's easy but practise improves the outcome. I'll send you a heads-up when I post - maybe later today or tomorrow. Cheers, Mick

Hi there, it called lacing cord and was used extensively in the production of electrical harnesses for aircraft and other control equipment before cable ties; search for this on eBay: LACING CORD 1.90MM X 0.26MM X 200M Accessories Cable Management - CCCB6786
