You know you're reading an H.P. Lovecraft story when you suddenly realize you're 15+ pages deep into pure architectural descriptions.

You can tell it's George R.R. Martin if you just read pages about the food. It's so prevalent, people have made cookbooks based on the meals explained in his books.

Honestly I think his language is one of the reasons that his works weren't as popular during his own lifetime?
Having read many classics from the era, people just didn't talk/write like that anymore. I think it made his characters feel less realistic to his audience at the time. I mean, imagine if someone wrote a book where people talked in mid Atlantic way reminiscent of the 1960s but it takes place in modern day. It'd be weird, right?

"I have seen the Dark Universe yawning"...really, I thought Dracula Untold was a good movie, not boring at all, and I was sad when the planned franchise never materialized. To think that Lovecraft actually got to watch the final Mummy/Vampire team-up movie all those decades ago.

The necronomicon: one of the most rare books in all of history, yet, in every story about lovecraftian horror, you find one. From the Hexer series, the stories of Wolfgang Hohlbein (which is german), to a story about sherlock holmes and cthulhu and almost any of the other stories, there is one. It's like, every character has read it xD

It's not a coincidence that our protagonists are informed about the Necronomicon given that Lovecraft's fictional universe is centered around its contents.
We follow these protagonists simply because they are familiar with the Necronomicon and the dangers entailed within. None of the protagonists are everyday grocers and postmen with nice families and well-mowed lawns , but academics and explorers with an interest in the occult. There's a reason Lovecraft did not write a spin-off about Akeley's son in San Diego

Also, books can be numerically rare with a scarce yet well-visited number of copies. There appears to be a disproportionally high concentration of editions in New England, but aside from that perhaps entire nations are spared its terrible presence

Have any of you read Aurthur C Clarke's "City and the Stars"? In that book, it's method of story telling was the use of a device that created a mental reality allowing you to live through the story yourself. If we had that technology, i would love to live through this story while narrated by TES.
