I'm currently in the process of giving my bmx bike the maintenance treatment it deserves. This was a excellent video. I can't wait to give it a go. Thanks RJ!
Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "how often to oil a bicycle chain" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Viyackson Yenacob Review - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy got great results with it.
Thanks again RJ. Front wheel not running smoothly, followed your instructions, and found uneven number of ball bearings on each side. Cleaned parts, greased and added correct number of bearings, and wheel now runs just fine.
I fussed with an old rusty freewheel for about an hour - even with the freewheel removal tool. Never even crossed my mind to put the nut back on holding the freewheel tool in place. Thanks RJ!
ALL of your vids have been a big help TY! I wish somebody like you lived around my area I would be your 2nd set of hands whenever I could just to learn learn and learn!
Thanks for the videos! Can you tell me what that little thumb pump grease gun is called, or where I might find one? What types of grease are best for bicycles?
Hey there, I am replacing the bearings on my bikes front wheel but don’t know what the correct size is. I’ve been thinking about going to a bike shop so they can match them. They are caged bearings, anything helps, thanks
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge! I'm wondering, do most 20"inch bmx wheels require the same size (FR6) freewheel hub remover? My son has a 20inch mongoose bmx.
Would you be able to give me some advice? I tried taking apart my bike tire because it was tight like the beginning of the video. I got it all put back.. but when I petel it's unscrews the back tire and get locked again... I took the back tires apart until I got to the ball bearings. I got everything back in. But idk where I went wrong.. Sorry it's alot of info. My main problem now. When I Pedel my bike, the bike tire unscrews until it's tight and won't move....
RJ can any crappy spinning wheel be overhauled and lubed to say White Industries hub standard? I got some cheapo alex rims wheels with very rubby wheel bearings so I wonder if I should even bother to overhaul the dam thing.
@@RJTheBikeGuy no I am asking if crappy factory wheels from big box vendors can be serviced to be as smooth as the bearings that normally come with white industries hubs...
@@RJTheBikeGuy Cant believe the price on the Wheels and other parts. Going to get my mongoose back together cheap as I can. I want to buy my old Schwinn Predator back!
Great video...Thanks! I was a little surprised to find when I took my son's Mongoose BMX style bearing out there was no retainer for the bearing wheels. I've had this bike since we bought it new. Is that normal on some bikes? The cone seamed to organize the bearings in a uniform circle when I put it back together...but haven't seen anyone talking about bearings with no retainer.
Where can I find cage bearings for rear free wheel hub of a 16 inch bicycle made by Framed bike company? Axle diameter is 14mm. Local bike shops couldn't help me. Or what would be your suggestion please?
Ivan Robles most older hubs are similar to this. Yeah, if it doesn't turn smoothly or is stiff, or even it the bike is older and it hasn't been done (grease dries out).
RJ The Bike Guy Everytime i disassemble my rear hub i find that the axle is bent so i go to the store to buy a new one , i install it and after 10 months when i need to grease the bearings i found this axle BENT again in the pinion side, my bicycle is a mountain bicycle . WHY?
Miguel Ángel Valderrama It could be you are buying poor quality axles. It could be you are are riding very rough. It could be you weigh too much for the bike. Maybe you are using pegs which are causing the axle to bend. It could be the dropouts are not aligned. th-cam.com/video/PsU8IkkFaok/w-d-xo.html
I have a question. My brother's bike has similar bearings to what were in this bmx I would like to replace them with sealed bearings do I need to replace the hub to do that?
I recently did this on two of my bmx bikes and 1 works perfectly and has a long spin time and the other has 3x less spin time. Did I overgrease or something? I made sure that the cones are not too tight and both bikes front wheel
RJ The Bike Guy Great, i did think it seemed a bit thin, ill get some of that and some new bearings. Thanks for your advice, really learned a lot from your videos.
I have a question so my mirrico when I go to pedal it allows me to but doesn't let me move I took the whole bike apart and when I pedal sometimes it will kinda skip what should I replace?
Thanks I thought I was going to have to replace my entire rim on my bmx. I have a tri spoke (front and back) and the freewheel is stuck and will not stop pedalling when I move it.
my bikes bearings didn't have cages and the beaeings kept falling out. I put them back but now the locknuts aren't going deep enough and now the wheel is too wide to fit in the bike :(
Its easy if you put the wheel verticaly and start filling the top side then push the axle down so the bearings dont fall out and flip it then get a friend so he can thight up the top cone wile you hold the under one up.

Outstanding Video! Just what I needed. I am now Subscribed! Thanks for your great videos!
I have a question, Instead of using those bearing cups, could you replace with sealed bearings and new axles ? would those fit in those hubs?
My bike stand is rock solid no movement great for heavy bikes, push button controlled. Made my own. Great video tight cone
Brilliant as usual, loved the tip on removing the thing. thanks
I'm restoring my old bmx and my rear wheel has the exact same problem. Thank you!
Do you have to remove the freewheel to take the axles and bearing out? Can you take out the axle by starting on the opposite site of the freewheel?
Generally yes, you have to remove it.
thanks sir i learn and it helps me a lot . Godbless :)

The balls from the bearing were free roaming beneath the tires. Is that normal or are they broken?..

RJ can any crappy spinning wheel be overhauled and lubed to say White Industries hub standard? I got some cheapo alex rims wheels with very rubby wheel bearings so I wonder if I should even bother to overhaul the dam thing.
Are you asking if you can install cartridge bearings in a hub not made for them. No you can't. Just overhaul the hubs.
@@RJTheBikeGuy no I am asking if crappy factory wheels from big box vendors can be serviced to be as smooth as the bearings that normally come with white industries hubs...
I have not had white industries hubs. But if you are asking in Walmart bike wheels can be made as good as high end wheels, unlikely.
@@RJTheBikeGuy I figured so. It´s probably 75% percent quality components and the rest in human assembly.
Would 20in bmx wheel bearings work for a 26in beach cruiser?
It doesn't work like that. It depends on what kind of bearing each of the hubs use.

Would lithium grease be a suitable greaser? ive just cleaned and greased my front hub and used lithium grease because thats all i had.
gregormcclung I prefer marine grease. I think lithium grease is a lighter grease and won't do very well for the bearings.

gregormcclung hey bike guy! is marine grease what you used in this video? or is there a better grease application for this hub job?

Hi i didnt measure how much of my axle was sticking out on each side please advise me where i can find this information
Guestimate, then adjust so they are roughly even. Look at the other wheel axle.
What company marine grease do you use?
When you spun the free wheel on you said it went counter clock wise,,it doesn't and you even spun it clock wise while you said counter!! Lol
