What we actually need is 0 nits black + 4 sliders: peak brightness, paper white, shadow detail and UI brightness. It can't be that hard, but it seems that there is just not enough HDR experts in the dev teams, so that we always get half-baked solutions and have to find our own workarounds. We've had HDR in gaming since 2016 and I really think it's time we reach such a quality standard for future releases...
Paper white affects the mid tones, or like: 100% SDR White. The brighter you go, the lower the dynamic range at the end. 100 - 200 makes the most sense to get a natural picture with more dynamic range. But UI elements are a different thing (if there is a slider for). In general UI elements of course are also affected, if you change paper white...
On console I remember having to change the in-game contrast options to make it pop. I think I turned on the dramatic contrast and increased brightness to elevate the black crush Nixxes port of HFW also had broken max luminance on launch
The HDR settings detected 993 nits on my Alienware AW2725DF QD-OLED monitor and on these 'default' settings I thought the game's HDR presentation looked stunning during the opening sequence at night with all the fire and other light sources. The only issue I had, and this was also true of the PS4 Pro/PS5 version, is that the interiors of the houses looks way too dark, as f the effect is exaggerated. At one point, the game actually transitioned from gameplay to a cutscene inside a building and the whole scene became much brighter, while still maintaining decent black levels. Looks like I might have to up the Brightness from 50 to 60 or 70 to compensate but that will also raise the brightness everywhere else which otherwise looks fine at the moment. It's just the house interiors that look too dark.
