@@OneOkRockSamurai I mean moreso like, how in Asian culture as a whole, like, Hollywood has kinda exaggerated the whole honor aspect. Also, what I find interesting is that, for all his claims of honor, Lord Shimura seems to be a relative outlier, as almost every other noble character we meet isn't too adverse to underhanded tactics

Well, it’s authentic right. Nobody cares about accuracy when there is authenticity, passion, and soul put into work. Because when an artist put their soul into something, it has no choice but to show itself. When you look at AC shadows, not only is it inaccurate but it’s also inauthentic. On top of it it’s disingenuous. So you don’t feel any soul, passion or beauty when looking at it. After all, what is Art? Art to me is something that can show sorrow, passion, and beauty. Without those things, how can you call something Art? Really without beauty there is nothing. I think sorrow and beauty are two very important things when it comes to Art and relatability. Western games is lacking that in spades. When a game has sorrow, passion, and beauty. Then it has soul. Then it becomes relatable. The reason why Western AAA games are forgettable, and unrelatable these days it’s because it doesn’t have any of those elements. At least that is my theory.

@@The_Primary_Axiom you're ignoring the TH-camr main point since he STARTED talking about this situation
You don't seem to understand with regards to Japan what he meant when he says that Ubisoft was disrespecting Japanese
The way the civilians treated yasuke as a samurai
The out of season cherry blossoms and harvest
      Even yasuke as a samurai
And to say that was all based on historical records and done with cultural consultation?
My English isn't good. I'm trying to be blunt to make up for it. What I'm saying is why tsushima is good and not shadow is because the atmosphere and design are all authentic and they did NOT lie about the story being historical fiction.
Don't forget the rest of the world isn't Canada or the United States.
Those two countries teach their school about leaving the UK and the colonial era, then 9 times out of ten they skip the Victorian era and jump right into the modern history of the industrial era.
Every other part of the world learn about mythology, taught about folk literature and history and not just something they read in a children book.
They learn about the middle ages, the Renaissance or in the case of most Oriental Asian countries the feudal era, then the Victorian and their industrial past.
When you are shown a piece of media presenting your country and it's history both the authencity and WHAT it claims as fact or fiction matters.
If it seems like I'm coming for your throat I apologize, that not the intent I'm just trying to be blunt and it may come off as rude.
As an Asian immigrant in the west I'm just frustrated over how my ethnicity has been treated as a joke in western media over the past thirty years and how Ubisoft is continuing that chain

It can go both ways. I have seen Japanese media depict the West's history with more respect and attention to detail than a lot of Western media.
What I think is happening here is that there will always be misconceptions and tropes in historical media that people are used to, kinda like how people complained about feathered dinosaurs in movies, and so developers, producers, artists, will often stick to these tropes that their own cultures know. A foreign culture on the other hand does not generally know or care about these tropes. Not always the case but in my experience you tend to get a different way of looking at your own history when it's told from an outside perspective. It has to come from a place of passion though.

@@Daniel__Nobre I mean genuinely if you were to list out all the stupid takes it would be an endless list, like how apparently RE5 is racist for featuring black zombies in a game based in Africa, guess Umbrella shoulda just imported some white zombies to shoot at. Or even recently with Stellar Blade, how they immediately spazzed out because Eve is attractive, but then a week later the exact same people start acting like massive simps over the Hades 2 characters. Again these people are not to be taken seriously, and like you said a lot is likely rage bait like everything Alyssa Mercante does, but a lot of them are genuinely just brainwashed political activists pandering to a group of similarly brainrotted people on twitter. Tbh nothing makes me more secure in my view on these things than seeing how whenever they do, rarely, engage with actual people who oppose their view, they can't have a discussion without massively mischaracterizing what the person said or literally just putting words in their mouth. A good example recently was Jim Sterling, who is now nothing more than a corporate shill and a trans activist imo, who tried to lambast a guy who had the very common sense take that men and women have different bone structures (talking against female characters being masculinized I believe), and completely mischaracterized his stance basically calling it phrenology, which is such a false comparison its baffling, like obviously we can identify sex in criminal investigations based on the skeleton, identifying gender is a far cry from trying to say someone is a criminal based on skull shape. But of course this doesn't fit their little narrative where a man or woman is just whatever the hell they feel like, so gotta mischaracterize it and act like men and woman don't have unique bone structures.
Anyway sorry I know this is long but like I said can't stress enough how much I dislike journos and stuff like the above is why, and tbh idc if some people have opinions like this but there is no balance, no diversity where it counts which is in diversity of thought.

The first time I played Ghost of Tsushima I opted for Japanese dialogue with English sub and it hit different when Khotun Khan first spoke because he was speaking Japanese. Maybe it sounds silly but it really hammers down that the Mongols had studied the Japanese, even learning their language, so it gives depths to the enemy and shows that they weren't just ruthless people but smart, well-organized, and strategical army. Not to mention the game is so, so beautiful I clocked in hundreds of hours because I often stopped just to enjoy the scenery.
And sure, all the talk about honor did feel cliché from time to time, but everything else is just A++++. Great game, hope you continue playing it and enjoy it! I've been dying to see and know how an actual Japanese feel about this game.

I am also Japanese (my family name is Shiwaku). I can't speak for all Japanese. But I will say that I feel a certain pride in knowing that there are folks who might not be Japanese, that fully appreciate the culture, as well as the understandings, and customs. Ghost of Tsushima represents to be, respect given from the outside inward. There is no hidden social-political preaching. There isn't some hidden agenda. It's 100% pure, unadulterated homage, in many respects. As such, I have enjoyed this game from beginning to end.

I can understand Jin's internal struggle with honor. He's fighting an enemy with a very different set of values. What's the use of warrior honor against an enemy who would invade just to take your land, resources and human hands to do menial work? The greatest honor here is to protect yourself, the survivors and fight back against the invaders.
I really like how alive Tsushima is both naturally and spiritually. It's like both are one in the same which is truly amazing. Foxes lead you to Inari shrines and when you bow to the Kanon statue glowing green bugs fly around you. It was like Kanon was saying thank you.

I remembered Tsushima as being more "authentic" from when I played it long ago, but I'd forgotten much of the classic samurai movie cinematography, etc. Seeing it again right after the AC Shadows videos really emphasizes the huge difference between Sucker Punch's loving homage to Japanese culture and samurai movies versus Ubi's "yeah whatever, it looks Asian I guess" + forced Western sensibilities approach. Ubi wants to say the complaints are just about putting a black man in AC Shadows, but clearly it's not that, and this video emphasizes why Tsushima was so good and AC Shadows is just insulting.

Ghost of Tsushima takes many liberties with history, like using more modern armour and weapon aesthetics than would've been normal at the time, and the developers have been forthcoming with this. A lot of it is just for fun, like how Jin fights, or to strengthen that connection people already have with the prevailing image of the Samurai, especially in the west. The idea was not to accurately represent history, but to pay homage to the idea of Japanese culture and history, in ways that the Japanese could find tasteful and respectful despite its many concessions for the sake of entertainment. If a Japanese gamer ever confused this game of being made by Japanese developers, I imagine it would've been the greatest compliment you could've given them for their efforts.

If you make a game that is bad people will think it’s decent. That’s what happens when the bar gets really low. We had no idea how bad western AAA games would become back then. If we did, ghost of Tsushima would’ve been a masterpiece and work of art. Which it is.

The two main producers of the game were named honorary citizens of the island of Tsushima. Pretty cool.

This game is truly a masterpiece for me. Visuals are beautiful and the story is amazing. Sad that this is what Assassin's Creed Shadows could have been if only gave the culture and history the same respect that Sucker Punch did. Ubisoft didn't bother to give even a fraction of care/love that these developers did. Thank you Sucker Punch for an unforgettable game :) I hope you enjoy it as much as the fanbase did! Opening credit scene still gives me goosebumps lol

Literally reminds me of AC Shadow but being right in culture, tradition and history with little fiction because it needs to add something like action. How I wish AC Shadow should do this... Sadly they might not.

shadows took the art style, people bowing around when they see you etc from GoT and they made it 10x worse lol. And GoT took AC influenced stuff and made it 10x times better.

I've just bought this game because of this video. I wanted this game since they announced it. It was a PlayStation exclusive, and that made it a problem for me. After that, I forgot about this game until you posted this video. I investigated a bit and was really surprised to see that it has come out for PC in May 2024. I'm so excited to be able to play it for myself now! 😁

I’m on my FOURTH play-through. Played the normal base game, NG+ and then directors cut version with the expansion story. Now I’m playing again from scratch. I love it so much.
I decided to check TH-cam to see if there is anyone playing it for the first time and what a treat and honor to see a playthrough with someone so knowledgeable and can provide insight! Thank you so much!

Ghost of Tsushima was for me the AC: Japan that AC never did. When I heard that AC really made an attempt at Japan I was hyped of course. We all love the idead of ninja assassins. The way you go from Samurai to Shinobi in Ghost of Tsushima is just so perfectly made ... with the grapling hook and the whole outfit change before you sneak into the castle. It's just great...

Honestly such a great touch to have the wind serve as your navigation system...They really did everything they could in this game to minimize the UI without lessening the player experience. It strikes the perfect balance of ease of access, and immersion in the environment. All the info you need is right there, but nothing takes you out of the game and the beautiful scenery the dev team took the time to make. This is easily one of my favorite games of all time and I'm so glad you are enjoying it.

It was obvious from the get go, that Ghost of Tsushima was not only a better Japanese themed AC game but a better AC game in general. That game utilizes all of the best things about the older AC games and makes a well crafted newer version of it for the modern age of gaming. I know it’s not fair to compare it to AC and it should be rated on its own, but it’s very hard not to compare how GOOD Ghost of Tsushima is to Assassins Creed now.

Not sure how you'll take this but I'll say it anyway.
As a Brit i kinda have a slightly invested interest in its depictions of the Samurai and if it is accurate because the UK and Japan are both island nations we've arguably had a good relationship minus WW2 and when you go through history you come across Englishmen like William Adams who would become the first British/English Samurai some claim the first White Samurai serving Tokugawa Ieyasu as an advisore which got the trade ball rolling for Great Britain and japan
so from a historical context while the games somewhat fictional events take place long before his arrival in Japan as a foreigner seeing what someone from my country would have had to adjust too the way of life, the different belief system and mindset its incredibly interesting and with HBOs Shogun increasing that interest given it kinda centred around those two.
Ghost of Tsushima and Shogun have helped massively in portraying this time period of Japan for western audience very accurately I feel helps us understand Japan much more.

One of my best game ever. I love it. Unlike Ubisoft who doesnt respect Japanese culture, Sucker Punch actually spend years studying the culture and even though they said they still have alot to learn, they gave the culture alot of respect and even tell people the storyline isnt base on one for one actual events. Much respect for the American developer from Seattle instead of French Developer Ubisot

And they didn't even claim to be accurate, looks like they wanted to pay homage to Japan, i love Japan to so i understand what they tried to do, they did not try to put a damn kukojin in there for no reson, i love Japan ❤
