  • The present video, Adenium Bonsai Caudex is Shrinking || How to Revive, is a very essential tutorial video for adenium growers. Friends, if you are an adenium grower, you may have faced the problem that your adenium caudex is shrinking like the adenium bonsai shown in this video. The secret to revive the plant is to find out the reason of shrinking. Adenium caudex shrinking occurs mainly after repotting. The video shows an adenium bonsai tree repotted 5 months ago. It had been growing well for first 3 months. After 3 months the caudex of the adenium plant began shrinking. Now the caudex is not soft. It`s shrinking. The branches and the leaves are green. As I myself look after the plants, I know well that the desert rose never goes shortage of water. So I think there is a little rot problem. Then the video proceeds to see what`s happening beyond our eyes. After pulling out the adenium bonsai from soil it is seen that there is no development under the soil. No feeder roots are seen. The plant has given away the media. Some roots have rotten out. There are also some patches of discoloration on the roots. One large root feels soft.
Considering all these, we may conclude that : Somehow any fungal problem occurs in the media and the media becomes incompatible with the plant. So the plant begins exhausting the nutrient and water stored in its caudex to survive. And the caudex shrinks releasing nutrient and water. There is some root rot because the adenium has been sitting long in moist incompatible media.
Now the video shows the remedial steps: As shown in the video, the infection is not severe but it goes deep. If repotted the plant may heal itself in the new media. But I`m not willing to take the risk. Hence the remedial steps are:
    1. The infected tissues are cut off.
    2. Branches and leaves are cut.
    3. The cut area is covered with fungicide.
    4. The plant is dried in shade for 7 days.
    5. Repotting after 7 days` drying in the new media.
    6. Applying rooting hormone.
    7. Keeping the media moist until any development is seen.
The video ends with a call to subscribe the channel, dot basecamp and to like and share this video and to leave a comment.

Have learned so much from you! Excellent narration and clear video angles. Thank you from Montana, where growing adeniums is a challenge, but not impossible!! All stages of growth, pruning, repair, etc., just take longer. Our outdoor growing season is very short, with most of the year they are kept inside. Thankfully, I have a small, heated garden room building with windows on 3 sides and southern facing skylights. Plus additional grow lights on the north side. We’ll see if that is enough for flowers, though. Biggest problem so far is managing the water.....they rot at the drop of a hat!!! (Slang).....meaning they rot very easy!!!!!😳

Make use of the heated garden room. Use very fast draining media. Wish u the best.

Dear Master, thank you! This problem has a noticeable frequency among succulents, I have it with my Crassula Ovatta. When you was cutting the caudex, I feel a pain in my heart... But it's true, only the radical cutting could save the plant. Your video is very instructive and useful, thanks a lot!

It`s difficult to totally control mealy bugs if established because they are very resistant to most pesticides. Still hand pick is, I think, the best for small size plants like adeniums. Clear them with cotton wet in 50% isopropyl alcohol. Then spray any insecticide containing Imidacloprid.
Control and destroy the source of ants which often come with mealy bugs.

Pot size depends on plant size. As for mature adenium leave 2 inch space between the pot and the root (side) and leave 2-3 inch under the root.

Hi, after repotting how long will you start to water again?

    • @dotbasecamp
      @dotbasecamp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I generally use moist potting mix and water needs after 2-3 days. But if any big root is cut I use dry potting mix and water after 3 days.
