  • Chip Stock Investor provides an in-depth analysis on whether it's time to sell Nvidia stock, focusing on the semiconductor industry's growth and Nvidia's performance within it.
Nvidia has had a massive run in the last year as the new bull market has begun, especially with its data center sales reaching over $18 billion in the last quarter alone. Nick and Kasey discuss the factors driving its stock price surge, such as the booming data center segment and the rise of generative AI markets.
Also discussed are signals Chip Stock Investor is looking for that could give clues as to when the cyclical cycle is (temporarily) over for the accelerated compute market Nvidia pioneered, including big tech company capital expenditures (Google and Meta), Nvidia's revenue guidance, and its valuation based on simple price-to-earnings ratios. Importantly, the video advises on who should consider selling their Nvidia shares, and outlines one strategy for doing so, emphasizing dollar cost averaging (DCA) as a method for adjusting portfolio allocations.

Thanks for the video. There's an article on Sequoia Capital's site, "AI’s $200B Question". It claims "a $125B+ hole" between revenue generated by using Nvidia's GPUs, and the revenue needed, i.e. the cost (which is Nvidia's GPU revenue plus the cost of power) plus a gross margin. As well as depending on some assumed figures, I'm not sure if they're comparing annual revenue to lifetime revenue, and it hurts my head when I try to make sense of it. I expect that's my problem not Sequoia's, as I wouldn't be smart enough to get a job there. Anyway, I like the approach of asking if all the GPUs being bought are going to generate enough revenue for the buyers, but I think there might not be enough data currently to get a good answer based on data. Which leaves us with the things to watch as described in the video, like Nvidia's revenue growth decelerating. Or just holding long term if you can ride out the volatility.

    • @chipstockinvestor

Read that article. Perhaps GPU build out is occurring. But the "AI use case" is too narrow when you consider this is all really about "accelerated compute," not just AI. ~$200 bil gets spent on data center infr every year, and that figure (including new accelerated compute systems) was actually a bit lower in 2023 than the previous two years. Video started well about changing from GPU to a more holistic computing cloud product and services offering . But by the end about dollar cost averaging deviated from the specific to the general making uninteresting.
