Ep037 Sailing FAIL! The one where we get stuck in a tree.

  • As we continue our journey North up the ICW we have an eventful 48 hours...we make a mistake entering a lock which sees us get our rig tangled in the trees, then run aground, and finally our engine overheats! Its never dull when living aboard.

    Tough time of year too when the trees are at there worst! Over-nighted at that same visitors center too. The water lever is lower at the end of the summer too. looks like you did not have any trouble with high speed motorboats either , they come up behind you fast (no speed limit) and then you are expected to slow to a crawl, and they will slow, you hope, so no wake as the go by!. the dismal swamp is a special piece of water way and you should be proud of doing it.
    cheers warren.

    I’ve not encountered this site before but color me impressed. To be at your best when things are at their worst and doing so as a team is pretty uncommon. You two work very well together and your no panic methodology makes this site a cut above.
    I think that’s the first pilot house sail boat I’ve ever really liked. Cool boat.

    Fun episode...some good pointers for those sailing the Dismal Swamp huh?? Couple of things, I am envious of your calm demeanor when tied to the tree...I would likely have come up with some new verb/noun sentence conjugations....second....coming from the UK (and me having lived there for years...) Miller Lite is hardly a beer break! Continue the travels, guess it will be over the pond back to Europe this summer? Thanks, Andrew

    Cross the Atlantic then get stuck in a tree! I've watched sailing vlogs for 5 years, that's a new one! Seen a few boats get spun in river / lock currents tho, you aren't the first. Some lose masts being driven forward into bridges that haven't opened yet.

    I follow at least 30+ sailing channels. Of those I have seen at least 6 have problems on the ICW
    It's too narrow, too shallow. Considering the huge usage it gets , you would think someone
    could dredge it out and cut some trees and kill some mosquitoes !
    You guys did really well to get out of the tree without damage, good teamwork :)

    Thanks for the great video. Now you are in my stomping grounds. E North Carolina. My boat is now home ported in Oriental NC. Yes, after open ocean cruising the intracostal is quite different. It really is beautiful and amazingly secluded going up through the Pungo and alligator rivers Ive done the route to the Chesapeake several time and prefer the Dismal Swamp Canal for its beauty. Always stay overnight at the docks in the middle near the visitor center. the worst part of the trip is getting through all those darn bridges in Norfolk area. Now I must say, just saying, that in the tens of thousands of miles that I have cruised, Ive never run into and tangles in a tree. That being said, you did a great job getting unstuck. And all while shooting great video!! I’ll catch up with your latest vids. Cheers.

All in the very big picture of experience I guess, and a surprising amount of flow from a river lock! Best sailing channel on the tube strikes again :-)

  • @davidlawrence8800

    Depending on the time of year, I would pick getting the rig caught in some trees over getting beaten up in a Norther off of Cape Hatteras. Having sampled the latter, a branch sticking through the backstay, or cleaning the keel on the bottom seem rather benign if there is a norther outside.

    • @markturner4219
      @markturner4219 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      6 foot is fine for the ICW. The Great Dismal Swamp route is an alternative to the main route. The main route through Currituck Sound and the Albermarle and Chesapeake Canal is plenty deep enough and has fewer obstructions. I believe that is the way Seahawk took as she would have no chance on the Dismal with a 7 ft keel.

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a Victory 40 and our draft is a little over 5 feet. So I think you would make it, but be prepared to bump in a few places!! 6 foot seems to be the limit.

    • @arekkaniewski4442
      @arekkaniewski4442 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank for your input. I know we always have the Virginia cut, but I heard elizabeth city is a good place to stop. Virginia cut offers coinjock. It's good but always busy. I will have to check currents levels before the trip. As for the boat I gotta look up the model. I always like the not so standard boats. Looks like a great set up.

    Sooo, you have an Interphase forward facing sonar? How do you like it? What range in what depths are you seeing?

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really good for scouting out anchor spots and obstructions ahead of the boat, but as you get shallower the range also gets shorter. So in 4m of water it sees about 15 to 20m ahead. It goes up with greater deapth, up to 35 to 40m out at a guess.

    • @svdeguello2884
      @svdeguello2884 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sailingsvborabora8712 I have Garmin's Panoptix version of this mounted on a stainless pole that swings down into the water just in front of the mast on the catamaran. I have only played with it so far around SF bay. I think it would have been useful when we had the boat in French Poly. Although I would be reluctant to rely on it picking my way through bommies.

  • @CalciteSerendipity
    @CalciteSerendipity 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I once saw a boat arrive at Deep Creek Lock with a branch wedged in his spreaders which would have been very embarrassing to be seen like that. But the lock tender pried it free.
    The area outside of the lock was shoaled up by a hurricane so if you don't know the way it's easy to go wrong. A few floating buoys would be a good idea.
    If you are doing Delaware Bay be advised it is the worst body of water on the east coast. Conditions can suddenly change to what you had in the Alligator River. Plan to motor abd get it over with.
    Were you planning to go to Maine? The density of lobster pots is 5 to 10 times that of crab pots. You might want ti skip it; spend a few nights dyring the week at the Isles of Shoals NH (www.starisland.org) and then sail directly to Shelburne Nova Scotia.
    Activecaptain.com is a great resource.
