How To Form, Pour, And Stamp A Concrete Patio Slab

    In this video I'm going to show you how to form, pour and stamp a concrete patio slab.
    This is a backyard concrete patio that will look like Ashlar Slate when we are done stamping the concrete.
    First, I show you how to build the forms for the slab. This includes measuring the lengths, screwing them together, squaring the forms and staking them in place.
    I'm also using my Topcon HL5-B self leveling laser level to set the forms to grade/ This is the easiest laser level to use for this kind of work in my opinion.
    Second, I show you how to pour the concrete for the patio slab. We spread out the concrete, mag float our edges and screed it level off the tops of the forms. Then I bull float the concrete to smoothen the surface and prepare it for stamping.
    Third, I show you how to stamp the concrete using my Ashlar slate stamps. These stamps go together kinda like a puzzle, they have to go in a specific direction and inter-connect or the pattern will not come out right.
    Forth, I show you how I saw cut expansion joints and power wash the concrete to prepare it for sealing.
    Fifth, I show you what concrete sealer I like to use on my stamped concrete jobs and how to apply it.

      @@TheSharpc The purpose is the concrete will crack eventually. By cutting it You leave a weak spot. So if all goes right the crack will be in the cut line so you will not see it.

    People who post DIY videos on TH-cam should really watch this and take notes. Not only is Mike obviously an experienced tradesman who knows what he's doing, but the camera work is clear and steady and the narration is excellent. Super informative and easy to follow. None of this stammering through semi-incoherent rambling about this or that while the camera bounces around, is only focused half the time, etc. You just watch this and know with certainty that Mike does exceptional work and is a reliable, honest businessman. Thank you for posting this video; even though I have no plans to pour any concrete in the near future, I learned a bunch and its always a pleasure to watch someone create something with skill and pride.

    I watched this video from my TH-cam recommended videos about a year ago. It was the very 1st video of anyone laying concrete that I had ever seen at that time. I found it so interesting and fascinating that I've been watching people lay concrete and watching folks build brick buildings/structures and I went down a seriously year long rabbit hole of all things concrete.... I even watched so many people make decorative things like concrete pavers made with molds and fish tanks and plant pots literally anything can be made with concrete and even folks who wanted their counter tops done in concrete. A few months ago I was thinking about this video and how it started me down this intriguing fascination I had with concrete and I for the life of me could not remember your name and I just ran across this video again finally and im glad I did. Thank you for posting your video and I will 100% be subscribing today like I should have a year ago haha I can not wait to watch more of your videos. If not for me watching this video I wouldn't know anything about this and how incredible it REALLY is. Have a wonderful day

In this video alone, I learn how to keep cost down, profits up, patiences, tips on what to do and what not to do, different tools and that your a pretty awesome father. 100% pure knowledge with no distractions of ads, always on topic and no crazy video shaking. Your commentary made me want to stick around for every second of this video and I did. Not to mention the willingness of your daughter agreeing to help in the scorching weather is a sign of your great teaching rubbing off onto her. And, that is no idle praise from me since I was raised by a cement contractor and, like your daughters, I was a laborer for most of my youth, which was my motivation to do well in college. I did this for a living a few years ago. I had my own crew before the company went under. Definitely was my favorite job. Hard work and I could use my artistic skills to make amazing results. My personal favorite job was an overlay on a patio I did, the customer gave me freedom to do anything I wanted. I used an Adobe base color with a liquid release and a flagstone pattern. I mixed different earth tones using powder release and topcoat then hand painted all the stones. Made them look as realistic as possible. Looked fantastic when it was done.

      Also something I did that I don't see many doing is taking a mini trowel and knocking out the stamp joints then hiding the lines using the same method as above. (Mix of color release and sealer.)

      @kbanghart 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@normanshaw2541 thanks. One more question if you don't mind, for a large area, would it be ok to place in sections, and have joints in between? I guess the risk is that later on, part could raise or settle above the others, but would a gravel base help with that also?

    • @lakeman2604
      @lakeman2604 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kbanghart You can absolutely pour in sections. Takes a lot more time and effort, but if you don't want to use a bigger crew or are working with smaller loads of concrete anyway, it can be done. You can run rebar through the form on the side(s) that abut the next section(s) to 'dowel' the slabs together. As an added bonus, that can reduce or eliminate saw cutting. Note that you can get inconsistencies between pours that may affect the aesthetics.

    WOW!!! Finally someone makes a concrete video that knows how to place concrete. Excellent work on the patio and video but you make it look to easy and it's not. I have even seen some professional TV shows that try and first thing I see is they are where tennis shoes and think to self, that wont be good later ( chuckle ). That roller against the wall is a good trick we never tried. I'll be sure to watch some more of your videos. Oh by the way, 90 degree day. Probably close to 100 with the sun beating against the house back at you. Those two young ladies handled that better than 20% of the guys I've worked with through the years. They are probably your best help. It's good to finally see someone else still cares about detail. Sorry to ramble

More power to you, more success to your business and more blessings to you and your daughter and her friend! God bless.
