- In this video we show you how to demo, setup, and pour a concrete driveway! We had just poured this concrete driveway a couple months ago, as well as the neighbors driveway. I’m the homeowner. Just came across this video of our driveway. We noticed the next morning the concrete did not look right. My husband is in the construction biz and he said right off it looked like it was contamination. We knew it wasn’t any fault of Dave’s crew because he did a beautiful job on neighbors driveway across street. We notified Dave immediately and he was very responsive. We kept wetting it per instructions for a couple weeks and it just kept getting worse. Yes we were stressed because in these times so many don’t take responsibility for their work. We are so grateful to have chosen a contractor with high standards and integrity. He put us on his busy schedule and redid the driveway a couple months later. And it’s beautiful. Seems funny to say that about a bunch of concrete but what a huge difference it’s made for us. Our old driveway was collapsed and cracked from dead tree roots. Love it!

I use bad concrete on purpose the first time, then have the customer pay me again to remove and fix it the second time. Easy money.
It absolutely makes no sense for a Contractor to knowingly lay defective material. The commitments of ongoing future business and allocation of workforce, let alone maintaining reputation of the business means that no one would follow such a strategy.

@@OdellCompleteConcrete About 50 years ago I was mixing and casting parking lot concrete "bumpers" in a yard. A mentor who was about 40 years older than my late teens at the time told me that: "The mark of a craftsman is not someone who never makes an error, it's how the error is corrected."
They made this video because if they didn't replace it the homeowner was going to sue them for a shity job which the contractor clearly showed they did a shity job and blamed it on everything but himself I find it kind of funny that the homeowner wasn't in this video to actually make the contractors "Good Deed" look legit how do you people even get by in this world by being so naive

@@zacharyphillips9294 you got to remember, the companys finances have to be taken into account, they have to pay for the concrete, materials, labor etc, also scheduling, they could have been backed up for months or the family could have been unable to find any time to allow it, im not saying to forgive im just saying that the are factors that have to be taken into account, and one other thing, although it started cracking 3 days after, how long did it take the home owner to report it to the company

why would you say the batch ? the tickets should have waits and that usually happens when to much water . and under stand this cemex always over exceds its mixes thats why they have drivers write down the amountof water used all the time and this does happen to all concrete companys . what was the psi on job across the street where they the same? i can tell you sir and any one watching Cemex does not reuse mud and do it right so it dont come back on cemex . some times this happens and you redoing and national redelivering it shows you and then respect your and there work 👍ok now fiber 😁 that helps

I worked for a concrete contractor back in the 1980s and quality conrete made a huge difference. The newest plant washed the sand and gravel so it was clean and easy to work with

Odell, you can save a sample of the concrete you just took out and have it tested at a lab for strength. Then compare the results with what you actually paid for. That should be proof enough for the concrete plant.

Just make sure you tell them all the extra crap you did wrong like calcium adding fiber on the job your stupid stuff of moving a form because your guys can't straight edge right which takes up more time how many times did you have driver add water to the load? Bring it people 22 years driving mixer truck I know what went wrong. Plus you don't bullfloat with the driveway you go against itside to side.

Adding fiber is only better for the concrete, and adding water isnt the emd of the world. Id rather add water and know im gonna have plenty of time to get on it then race because its setting fast af. Just so its not footers or anything super important its not a big deal. Id never take any tips from a driver😂 you have no experience, youve just watched people do it. Gtfoh

When I complain to my contractor that the concrete they just poured a few months ago was cracking they just blew me off and said that’s normal so I have a Lotta respect for you
Yeah, cracks are kind of a given in certain areas. In Texas they would laugh at you if you asked them to redo this driveway. Cool to see someone do what he did here.
It depends why it's cracking. That was clearly bad material, it was falling apart. But, I would expect that a crack would form at some stage in any pour, because there are a lot of things about this that aren't perfectly predictable.
cracks are normal, concrete contracts and expands, you will get shrinkage cracks.
Yeah when I built my house I hired two guys that were plasters for outside walls and they did front concrete slab. It cracked in a lot of places and their response was that’s normal. So I’ve learned how to do it myself and poured and concrete slab yesterday

As a concrete worker myself I got to say that I'm very impressed by the integrity and work these guys have. Looks like the compactor may need to be replaced with a bigger one or just a new one, seems it was having issues. What really had me a bit worried was the brooming itself i'm used to doing those in 1 pass either pull or push/pull through the whole slab because I get worried that those multiple passes with the broom will either give me a different broom look all around or have a ugly in-between spot. Yeah the brooming does fade away eventually and you dont notice the marks later but thats usually years down the line.. anyway cheers and great work!

A lot of scumbags out there with no self respect or respect for their customers, who pay their hard earned money to people that can easily take advantage of them. People live in these houses, and flybys ruin the industry, most of them lowlife junkies and alcoholics. Some home owners are looking to scam as well, but most just want to pay an honest amount to have some decent looking work done on their property, safely.

Could be a bad mix, it's all cracked in the same way you would see from concrete that had maybe to much water. Settling is usually a spot not consistant across a few yards of dried pave.

@@ac7438 technically it wasn't his fault, but the homeowner pur their trust in him and trusted him to use quality products. It sucks and I personally don't blame him as well. When you buy something from a store and it's crap and have to return it, you deal with the store that sold it not the manufacturer. He corrected it so he earned my respect. Hoping the concrete company reimbursed him as well. But I bet he thinks twice about using them again.

I live in Miami, I work in environmental drilling and we do some concrete work, installing 2’x2’ concrete pads and when I see these concrete driveways and the walls SPLATTERED w mud… drives me nuts! Good to see someone that stands behind their work. The contractor that built our house poured the concrete for the driveway late in the fall when the weather was just above freezing in the daytime, and below freezing at night. It started flaking off right away. He wouldn't do anything about it, and I didn't have the money to take him to court.
That's a tough situation
Only concrete I've ever poured at or below freezing is smaller scale industrial concrete with NCA accelerator. All cosmetic concrete I won't pour if the forecast shows any days or nights dropping below 45 degrees over the next 7 days
I've had to do this twice in my short career. Alot of ready mix guys either don't clean out old concrete from prior jobs and mix Mudd with new or they load up 2000 psi concrete and misreport it as 3000 so they can pocket the extra dough and then owner calls and complains that the concrete is cracking...hate when this happens I always ask for ticket upon truck arrival cuz it doesn't lie. New contractor here , Odell you are the example of excellent workmanship
My first impression was that he got a hot load of concrete - otherwise known as "come back concrete." If the driver doesn't back spin his drum to get rid of the previous remnants, it can cause rapid cement hydration of the next batch. it only takes a little bit to spoil the whole next load.

Very professional approach and workmanship..... In UK we don't really do so many concrete drives, more to do now with surface water not being run off onto highway, so they need to be permeable.... Or soak away.. Excellent video

@@RHEC1776 LESSON 101 STAND BEHIND your customer....no matter the issue, and there could be many. As a Company David STOOD behind the customer and did the RIGHT thing. I know it's a pain as a business owner (which I am) and a client (which I am some times), but you ALWAYS win when you do the right thing. Never hang your head down low on a job like this, this will make you SHINE. I go back 100% of the time to companies I had an issue with and they rectified it.....100% of time I am a loyal customer to them. When they say, "it's not right let us correct it" You got my business 100%. I know it's a pain both ways, but I am a customer for life when it happens....Hope that encourages David.

@@xxxdpgxxxx1389 When concrete is delivered it comes with a bill of lading and that bill usually has the mix contents , batch plant name or sub plant and sack weight in tensile strength. And various other engineering data. It also has Date of Delivery, date of blend. That is how it is in my Part of California and Odell is 2 to 3 hours or so north of me with different Concrete batch plants. At the 12:32 time Mark in the video Odell talks about the concrete mix and the ratio to 12 . To wet it is unusable to dry is is unusable. There is no way to determine the mixture components other than the amount of visible gravel, you have to trust that the plant is delivering the concrete that the customer ordered.

Mixer driver here. What we do if we have to add Super P or any other admix product on site (including fiber) is we roll the drum backwards and bring the concrete up to a point where the additive slides off the hopper directly onto the concrete, then give it a three to five minute stir.
That way, you're not having to rinse product off the fins and sides of the drum with a big shot of water; the concrete stays at the slump it arrived.

As an old structural concrete contractor in S. CA. I've had aggregate react with chemicals in the concrete & pop out, leaving little to big craters. I hope you took some of the broken pieces & took them to a lab for strength testing, I'll bet it did not have enough cement in the mix the way it came apart, I doubt it would come up to 2000psi.
I also hope the redimix co. did not charge you for the second time.

@@jimbo7042 when doing the demo he mentions the concrete is weak so that is likely the real problem as the poster has mentioned.
The long cracks appeared because water was absorbed into the ground faster than it evaporated from the top - wetting the soil mitigates it by 10% tops, you need to put a 3mil on the ground to eliminate water absorptions. The "spider web" cracks are happening because the surface dried faster then it should - cover it for 3-4 days and actually slightly wet the surface every day in the morning. These guys pour concrete like amateurs and therefor get these poor results.
I believe he said the owner was covering the cement that helps him by not having to pay it all out of pocket.
@@georgescott6049 My point was if the test proved the concrete was not up to at least 200psi it is their fault & should not change him for the second loads.
We had this happen last year on 2 separate jobs. Both times the concrete co sent out a rep to look at it and collect samples before we demoed it. They covered cost of mud both times on the repours. I hope your concrete co took care of you

Hello Odell, great job there. Impressive. I really liked your new saw. I actually like the subtleness of the cut lines vs the larger radius of the edger trowels for joints. A lot less debris collecting in the joints too. I might try that next time I pour a pad.

First off, thanks for standing behind your work. That's the mark of a pro for sure! But I have a few questions.
1. I've noticed those holes in concrete before have been caused by pumping on muddy ground and chunks of mud are just finished over. Then a few days or weeks later, the finish breaks through and the mud gets washed out. Could that be the case?
2. I would think that creating the control joint with a deep jointer would be better because you establish the control before the curing process ever starts. Am I missing something?
Not a question but a comment, a few cheap insurance policies I use are, I've never had a complaint about too any saw cuts. Only visible cracks. I add fiber to everything, and I always have the plant bring at least 1 test cylinder for every 50yds. I label them with address, date, and time, and I keep them until the warranty expires.

The first pour is on the channel
The cylinder thing is actually really clever. That way you have the receipts, so to speak.
My career was in concrete, asphalt, sand & gravel. Adding fiber to 'everything' you pour is a waste of money in 90% of the applications you are likely doing. Most issues/problems in concrete boil down to two reasons- 1-poor materials going into the making of the concrete and 2- poor/incorrect sitework and finishing of the mix.
I've batched and oversaw the batching of concrete for everything from driveways to high rise buildings and had less than 100 yards rejected in my entire career over 30 years. Quality control of materials and finishing is highly overlooked.

@@id10t98 the advantage of fiber depends on what climate zone you're in. Water to cement ratio is critical.
I'm curious about ALL the concrete that came from that company on the same day! This could be even worse being pumped up six stories on a building or parking garage! The inspector would shut it down FAST! Good on you for fixing the problem and having your customers back! Awesome job!
Structural concrete gets tested and is notified before it is batched.
Same thing happened to my dad's patio a few years ago. I didn't bother calling the company back because I already knew they wouldn't redo it. You're a good guy Odell.

Yeah, I agree there was something wrong with original material mix. Not enough cement in the mix, perhaps. Or maybe original pour was already curing and the truck operator added extra water to make it out the chute. Or maybe a little of both.

Yes I respect that your company stood by their work. I would suggest using chairs in the future to hold up your reinforcement. I saw your boys pulling up the steel as they went along but it’s tough keeping that steel up when your stepping on it while working the concrete. If you review your video you will see that most of your reinforcement was on or near the ground which means your rods were useless on countering any tensile stress on any ground upheaval.
Always hear ppl say "why would I call back a contractor who did a bad job ?"...because it costs a lot and you have to give a guy a chance to fix it...that's integrity 💪👍👌
But if this happens again. It can cost you future clients.
“He” didn’t do a “bad job”, something was wrong with the concrete mix/ratios from the concrete plant/company. It happens sometimes. As long as it’s properly fixed & doesn’t cost the homeowner anymore to fix it, then customers will still talk & spread great things (word-of-mouth) about his work ethic & integrity… & that he can be trusted to come back & fix anything should they somehow experience any (generally rare/uncommon) issues. Nothing better than knowing it’ll be done & done right, or it WILL be done again 100% on the company’s dime. 🤷♀️

When I bought my house eleven years ago when it was new and the concrete started cracking I was told concrete gets hard, concrete crack and nobody will steal it! So I very much respect that you are taking care of the customer!

Love the videos, and I think you guys do some nice work, I’ve just always wondered why you trowel a driveway before a broom finish, when you can get a super clean flat finish from a mag, and a good straightedge man. I feel like troweling and brooming over works the concrete and weakens it to the point where when it fully cures in high temps you get surface cracks and Spaulding.
It consolidates the surface and gets harder
I noticed if I hit the concrete with the steel to fast I had cracking also when it is too hot I think wet curing helps. Awesome content nice to see guys stand behind their work.
Wow!... Imagine being a startup contractor and this happens in the first month of business... The concrete company may cover for the material and all but, still... equipment rental, labor hours, rebars... So responsible an ethical from OCC to back up his work... heck, maybe he is an occ of his customers satisfaction and work quality, and protects it with great work.

I just framed 600 square ft, plumber tore it all out to install sump pump plumbing that wasn't needed. Watching them everyday piece it all back.

I had my driveway done in September 2021. A couple of weeks ago I noticed spalling all over. The sidewalk and side drive they installed are still perfect, but when I called the contractor he kept telling me that it was because of the extreme temperatures here in Chicago this winter. I know I’m screwed because he didn’t want to fix issues like wide spaces against my house or where the drive meets up with my garage floor. I had to insist to make him fix it. Ugh! I wish I had an honest person like you David!

Your load of concrete was put in top of expired concrete that was still in the barrel.
That's why it turned to powder instead of breaking into chunks.
Start taking samples at your job sites and the chance of getting bad product will stop immediately

And they probably had to add extra water to make up for that, which made it weaker. Looks like there was too much water on the surface
I hope you get to test a sample of the concrete, because I have never seen anything like it, the tiny small cracks and there was nothing that held it together, there will probably also be a refund with the concrete supplier which must be settled. Hope you will share the result, as always nicely done work.

You sound like one of the few honest contractors out there. We had a pool installed in 2015 and in less than 2 weeks the concrete started cracking in several spots. We have several cracks all over. I called the contractor and he refused to come and look. Said since I live on a hill that the land moves. He says he does not warranty that. The house has been here since 1996 so I doubt the ground was still moving. What I do know that he did not do by watching this video was compact the disturbed ground before pouring the concrete. Our concrete is also colored and has dark spots in many areas. He also said these would go away in time but more than 6 years later they are still here.

Well, it all depends. If you have a long standing and good relationship with the ready mix company, they MAY comp the replacement ready mix. If not, it would cost you probably a minimum of $2,000 to sue them and cause further bad blood long term. So, 2 grand to replace less than 2grand. You MAY be able to sue for your entire loss, but still, is it worth it? What if you lose? Have there been multiple instances of this? What would it cost to have the problem concrete analyzed? Who can say that you or one of your guys didn't re-temper the mix with additional water or add additional water to the surface that was "getting away" from them the day it was poured? Sometimes you just have to eat it. It sucks but that's the world we live in. Doing the right thing, as he did here, will pay long term dividends in reputation and word of mouth referrals down the road.

Would really piss me off to have someone mess with my reputation by providing substandard materials. The worse part is you can't charge the homeowner. It wasn't his fault. The concrete provider definitely needs to pay as it was their mix that failed. Probably should have the concrete tested to see exactly what was wrong with it.

I’m surprised the whole job wasn’t vlogged. Videos would provide at least rule out potential causes. Then process of elimination. It’s a lot of work but I always pour and leave samples with the homeowner

Exactly what do YOU claim REALITY is in a situation like this where HE DID NOT CREATE the crappy concrete that failed when it dried..... he simply poured what THEY brought him!!! He has to be able to trust that the batch plant will put out a consistent reliable product!!!! And if they don't, if they screw up somehow then they NEED to be ready to replace the bad mix with good!!!! THAT is REALITY plain and simple!!!!

Seems like the fiberglass rod is very low in the new slab ?
Reinforcement "is primarily used in slabs on grade to serve as a control of cracking due to shrinkage and other effects" (Designing Floor Slabs on Grade, Boyd C. Ringo and Robert B. Anderson, p. 11). The reinforcement will not prevent cracking but will minimize cracks and maintain aggregate interlock. Rarely would reinforcement be used in a driveway to provide structural strength. There is a somewhat complicated subgrade drag equation used to determine the amount of reinforcement needed for shrinkage crack control. The idea is for the reinforcement to take over the tension that would have been on the concrete had it not cracked. In a slab with shrinkage control reinforcement, the reinforcement must be placed "above the mid-depth of the slab (ibid, p. 18). YES, the fiberglass rod is very low. It does almost nothing at that level and also totally ignores the requirement for coverage of the reinforcement by the concrete.

Hat off to you!!!. Stand by your work and the material used. Most contractors will give excuses, take advantage of clients' lack of knowledge to prevent re-work and additional expenses.

I remember back in the eighties watching some guys laying concrete on a military base in the UK, inside of a huge garage. The engineer made them lay it in a chess board pattern. First the white squares, then once it had hardened they did the black squares. The engineer said it was more structurally sound and reduced cracking significantly. I know the construction manager thought it was a nonsense lol.
