This performance and song for me just completely showed up the others. The contrast between a great song with a great singer and the songs and artists that came before it was almost embarrassing. She is as good now as she was in '97.

I will never forget where I was when this won. I'd been having a brilliant week as Tony Blair had won the election on Thursday (when everybody loved him) and I'd gone back to my parents house. We sat down and watched this win before getting completely drunk to the sound of "love shine a light".
One of the best weeks of my entire life and still to this day the best Eurovision entry.
@@noahbowie5985 Tony Blair's legacy hasn't aged quite as well as Katrina's! lol. After they've just used this as basically the anthem of the 2020 Eurovision, it's to me the best winner ever. If Earth had a theme....

This song marked the last time the UK won Eurovision (1997), and was the best song they ever entered, IMO. One of the best winners of all time, in fact.
It's probably no coincidence that the song was NOT written for Eurovision using some formula, focus group or jury, but for the 30th anniversary of a branch of The Samaritans (charity that helps depressed, suicidal and people in mental crisis), hence the positive, upbeat lyrics and tune and the naturalness of the emotion it evokes. It was only entered for Eurovision at the last minute when it was realised what a great song it is.

What a performance nearly 20 years after. Watched it right after the 1997 performance... and it´s a step more powerful than in 97 because 20 years later the whole audience knows every word, sings every line with a pride you really have to search...

I live in the UK and even I'm not happy that we automatically qualify for the finals just because we're one of the big 5 that donates the most.

I watched her winning on tv live back in 1997, I do remember it as it was yesterday. The Spanish commentator was so glad and I too, because apparently she was going through a bad period on her career and the victory was a recognition to her worth. The life of artists is very hard... Well, I don’t know if this was true or not, but the fact is that she was and still is a great artist and she deserved it so much! Greetings from Spain
