I have to say ....I like the what you build there. It is a lot of work. So i hope you don't mind saying . What the F... That lowpoly RED engine room behind the platforms is just EPICLY AWESOME !! . This has almost " the transition from 8-bit to 16 bit So it deserves an old school 8 bit sound... i do love those 8-bit games and hate all those " play from a cloud server because it is too big to store it on your harddrive because we have 800Tb of life like characters, dolby atmos sound and more ..... "
That is why i would play this game ..
Single player, light weight and retro feel . I can't wait to see it finished 😄

When I tried to figure out fun, I thought about sports and old Sega games.
In my opinion there has to be set rules on how the game is played. The fun is in the challenge for most gamers (not taking into account the people who only play for visuals).
The challenge comes from balancing out what you provide to the player and the obstacles they are supposed to overcome in the game (enemies, environment, hazards, puzzle, etc) with what they have at hand.
Also making it look interesting and visually appealing enough.
The polish is in the finer details of balancing and fine-tuning things just enough that the player feels like they have the right tools, they just need to use them correctly/efficiently (skill).
Also adding choice to the game, e.g. shops, adds more replay ability, because it makes you wonder: ''What if I did it differently and followed this path (or story route) or bought/upgraded this item?''
There's also risk & reward and chance.
Which is why so many people play Xcom 2, because it's like a huge gamble with tactics and hit accuracy. Bigger challenge, more risk, higher sense of accomplishment.
Patterns also play a large role in games, as it allows the player to identify and predict the challenge they are about to face or learn from their mistakes and adjust their plan of action. I've seen how much frustration game enemies cause when they don't follow any rules or are just too random. (Like I said, I game has rules. Real life is unfair. Do you want fun or a life lesson [Build it into the story, not the gameplay].)
So, it's playing by the rules, facing a challenge, and overcoming the challenge with what you were given (or bought from a shop with the money you were provided).
This is how a game designer creates a custom experience.
The last part is where most people ask: ''Why am I playing this game?''
This depends on the game, as most single player games are because of the story and unique challenges.
Multiplayer is more for social gamers, e-sports, or competitiveness.

Thank you for this comment, I truly appreciate it and you are making some great points. I am learning about the game design aspects now, much later than I should have. I have a lot catching up to do, and it is the flow, pacing, balance, systems, patterns, and the story that I would like to focus on to hopefully make this an enjoyable game. I will copy this comment to my library of notes =)

Loved to see how fluent you are in Unity; creating game features so quickly. I bet it won't take you long to become just as fluent in unReal Engine. Subscribed!

You can make level design variants like in risk of rain 2. For example a map has 3 variants of it selected randomly, and each variant have 10 different terrain design on specific places that selected randomly.
Edit: So player will never feel he is in same level its pretty low chance

The Unity prototype was fast, then it slowed down alot turning it into a more thoughtful game and learning Unreal Engine too.

Hi. For about 10 months I have been watching how you learn to simulate low polygon objects and I can't tear it off to jump and my eyes are burning. It was on this that I went to study the basics I started with TH-cam, now I am taking courses and watching in parallel how you create your game. I signed up in verse and I can't wait for your game to come out)
Sorry if it is not enough to understand me from Russia and this oat is made with the help of an interpreter (in some places it will not be clear but I have weak English. For this, you have to transfer everything through resources)

I think maybe you should just leave the helmet off for Nova because it creates a more appealing character and itd be easier to track your character on screen. Maybe, for a difficulty increase you can play without any armor and you have very low health?

Boss Monsters, for all my different Enemy Types i designed also Boss Monsters and special skills 😃👍
You could add an Alien Enemy Type that infected the Defense System of this Area for example.

Do you have to worry about your user system requirements. (CPU, RAM) As I would worry about large high vertice polygon game scenes, running on low end and mobile devices. All looks great on a typical game developer machine, but most casual users don't have our PCs.

Kul, jag sitter också med en platformer just nu :) Bortsett från sci-fi så är det lite annorlunda från ditt projekt. Men timingen var lite kul.

Very cool video again. We use unreal in the uni. I will change from 3DS Max back to blender in a few weeks. I can not wait, since Blender is way more suitable for me. That will increase my speed for the projects like crazy. I like the design of the level and all the neon lights. They are awesome. If you find any cool tutorials about the node system in unreal, I would love to see how you approach them. Greetings from Germany :D

What do you think about UE5 and is it worth the switch? I think the game looks great on Unity but they got a crappy deal for Indie if you compare it to UE5.
About the story, you should not focus to much on that I think. Better you spend as much time making the gameplay awesome that`s where the fun is. The story in most 2D plattforming games are nothing to talk about like Metroid for example got such a basic story but of course you can dive deeper and find books for lore and stuff but how many actually play it for the story? Both Ori games I think are the best MetroidVania (yeah, I know you ditch that thought) game out there. Simple story and great gameplay and a soundtrack out of this world.
I really se the similarities between Ultranova and Turrican 2. Turrican 2 for it`s time is so good with awesome soundtrack by Chris and even there i hear the influence and that`s good for someone like me.
Looking forward to the game and supporting you so you can make your MetroidVania game in the future.

Good choice to switch to Unreal. I’ve worked with unity in the past. But getting into unreal was so much better, especially as an artist (animator).
I have a ton of Unreal devlogs about my game on my channel. Please drop by if you need some inspiration 🙂
I am very much looking forward to follow your turrican game. Looks great so far 👍

Is a currency really needed? If it is only for buying augmentations, just have the augmentations cost a certain amount of materials.

    • @Imphenzia
      @Imphenzia  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Loot from destroyed enemies will fund upgrades, so maybe it would be possible to just treat that as the currency.

Speaking of prototypes...ive got 20+ that I've made. My nephews play them and want to see me finish them but I get stuck behind tough coding challenges that move me from prototype to prototype never finishing them bc I have yet to figure out a solution.

Why did you move to UE? Was it because of the new licensing and pricing of the Unity Engine?

    • @Imphenzia
      @Imphenzia  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi! I decided before the pricing drama so that had no part in my decision. I have been waiting to learn UE for years so I can make YT content covering both engines, pick the most suitable engine for each project, and so I can support my game assets better. For Ultranova I think the visuals and performance will become better compared to Unity. Most mechanics are pretty standard.

11:29 You call empty Unity projects a blank sheet of paper? … In Godot you gotta make the paper itself first then, I'd say. 😂 Doesn't Unity have tons of tools and whatnot in the asset store? In that regard Godot is way behind Unity. (Doesn't change my mind, though, I stillt love Godot!)
However, I actually like the idea of having an engine rather than an editor as you call it. Because I like the fact that with Godot I cannot only build games, but also just simple applications with nothing else than elementary UI elements (text inputs, buttons, a couple labels, stuff like that). I like the small footprint of it.
Nonetheless, for Ultranova Unreal is the right choice for sure. Keep up! 😘👍
