Man U were masters of those dirty little tackles which disrupted play, and demoralised the other team, stopping them from playing, without getting booked. Of course I think such constant dirty and deliberate fouling should be punished. But I was always ahead of the curve, and it wasn’t then.
The fact the types of Scholes and Keane got away with so extremely many dirty fouls during their career at Manchester United just shows what control Sir Alex had over the refs. And dont say "Viera was the same". No he wasnt. Not even close to Scholes and Keanes level. He played hard, yes. But Keane and Scholes sometimes went in to injure other players on purpose. The tackle Keane made on Håland back in the days could just as well had end his career. And that was far from the only time he mad tackles like that. When did Viera do a tackle like that? Never.

The fact that you say that means you didn’t watch football back then and just watched these compilations made by Arsenal fans. Both teams were playing the same and playing tough with fouls that in todays game would be reds was the norm. Just watch the match from Community Shield from 2003 when both Neville and and Cole got a yellow for fouls in the first 2 minutes. You’ll see how both teams were playing tough. Also watch FA Cup final from 2005 and tell me Lauren didn’t actually do worse vs young Ronaldo. He had like 8 fouls that today would at least be a yellow. Also Vieira could have seen a red from the fouls on Ronaldo. But of course you are only watching what it suits you as Arsenal fan.
As an itaian football fan who's been at Old Trafford several times and sympathizes for both Arsenal and United, i don't love theories about coaches or teams corrupting referees or similar stuff (that has been proven to be true only about one team and that's juventus). I do think that Man Utd's status as most iconic english football team at some points of football history has contributed to them being treated a bit more softly than other teams by some refs. But that has been known to happen to many important and influential clubs. That said, anybody who says Roy Keane was better than Vieira and talks about ucl wins and shit, doesn't know much about football in my opinion.

People often say they believe Keane was better than Vieira, but honestly, I think Vieira was always better. The difference was always that Utd had Keane and Scholes as a midfield partnership. Maybe the best partnership of its generation. Wenger never quite found the equivalent of Scholes (let's be fair there wasn't one), and so it was always magnificent Vieira and a weaker partner vs an almost as good Keane, and a world class Scholes. My only regret of that time is that after the invincibles Real Madrid wanted Vieira and Arsenal turned it down. How amazing would it have been to see Vieira next to Zidane in that Galactico team.
I've never heard anyone but the most rabid ManU supporters claim Keane was better than Vieira 😀 Vieira was always the superior footballer, by quite a margin I'd say. It's just that Keane always had Scholes next to him, who was so versatile that you could afford to have a (comparatively) low-skill wrecking ball next to him. They made a good partnership, but the thing is, Vieira would shine no matter who was next to him, whereas Keane would not have.
@@Jugistoteles The one game with the bust up in the tunnel before the match Man u won 4-2. @@emilpindur9400 Vieira never won the UCL. He was a bit part player in the World Cup win and was a sub throughout. Go on about Scholes being the real driving force all you want, but surely you've got to apply the same reasoning to Zidane in the 98 World Cup, plus all the other world class team mates that carried him to victory? Keane played for Ireland FFS so of course he's not going to do as well. Also, other than that 4-2 you mentioned, wasn't there a game where Keane scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Arsenal? Pretty sure he got the better of him that day too, not to mention when United beat Arsenal SIX - 1, and most other occasions TBH. Keane was the beating heart of the treble winners (who lost less games that season than the self titled 'invincibles' did in 03/04 and won 3x the trophies), a team that won three in a row, 7PLs in 9 years and broke records for points and winning with most games to spare - none of which Vieira did. Also - head to head in the PL - it’s Keane 5-3 vieira, and Keane missed one of those seasons through injury. Arsenal fans like to moan about refs, but you got away with murder yourselves - the 'battle of Old Trafford' in 2003 being a prime example. @@Jugistoteles "I've never heard anyone but the most rabid ManU supporters claim Keane was better than Vieira" Laughable that you call Keane a " (comparatively) low-skill wrecking ball". Such nonsense. Keane was the all around superior football player. Scored more goals and a better passer to boot. Keane was an attacking midfielder in his early days at Forest and was the clear better passer and assist man. He scored 33 goals in 154 games for Forest, over three seasons from the age of 19 to 21, with far less of a skilled cast around him than Vieira had at Arsenal. How many goals did Vieira score? at that age? 10 Goals in 173 games for Arsenal (his first 4 seasons, I even gave Vieira an extra year and season, to make it look closer) Vieira was powerful, stronger and better at defending. Fact remains....Roy Keane scored more goals with his head as well. Keane's goals powered United in the Champions League two years straight....Vieira rarely ever scored in the CL. Vieira scored a whopping 2 goals in 66 European Games for Arsenal. Keane scored 14 goals in 84 European Games for Man Utd. At age 30 Keane had played total games = 472 - 77 goals At age 30 Vieira had played total games = 523 - 43 goals (Keane nearly doubles Vieira in terms of goals per game at this point) Vieira should have been scoring 10 goals a year with his head, from corners and free kicks with his strength, athleticism, power and height. Frankly it's embarrassing that he did not. People love to point to the Vieira/Keane battles....fact is, Vieira was 5 years younger, and did not start to get the edge on Keane till post 2001, when Keane was 29 and had gone through severe knee and hip injuries. Arsenal fans always seem to forget the Keane pre-2000, when trying to assess the Viera-Keane rivalry. " It's just that Keane always had Scholes next to him" Oh, always? Is that so? Scholes did not even finally secure the starting midfield spot next to Keane full time until 1997-1998 and Keane missed half that season as you may recall. Before that, he never started more than 16 games in a season and was shuttled around at striker as well in his first three years. You seem to forget, that Keane played for Forest from 90 to 93.... Keane arrived at United in 1993, displacing Bryan Robson.....he had Paul Ince beside him for the first two years, then Nicky Butt was his primary partner in 95-96 & 96-97. 98-99 was the first year that Keane/Scholes were the full first choice pairing, with both healthy. "Vieira would shine no matter who was next to him, whereas Keane would not have" Really? Keane was shining with Nicky Butt next to him, who provided little in the way of attacking capability. Vieira was in full decline by the beginning of the 2004 season at only 28, and he had Gilberto Silva next to him, who was hardly a poor player. Did Vieira shine at Juve with Emerson next to him? Nope. He was only 29 when he got there. and Inter? He was 30 when he got there....How'd he do with Figo, Cambiasso and Stankovic next to him? He got beaten out for the starting role by Olivier DaCourt, and was never even a full time starter again. How about the 2002 world cup? 26 years old....in his prime....total failure without Zidane next to him. Why did he not stamp his authority on that World Cup? 2006 world cup, still only 30...totally average, even with superstars around him. Average in the group stage at best. Good vs Spain in the 1st round knockout, Decent in the quarters vs Brazil, Average vs Portugal in the Semis, Let Materazzi outfight him for Italy's equalizer in the final, poor, then limped off in the 60th minute into the sunset How about France in general....he had legends next to him....Keane had virtually nothing with Ireland....and yet, Vieira had 101 caps and 6 goals for France, while Keane had 9 goals in 67.....and had to shoulder far more of the attacking load in central midfield than Vieira did with the attacking superstars around him. Get over it....Vieira was a great footballer, powerful, strong, ferocious and a driving force....but simply not as good all around as Keane.

And they really think they’re brave and tough because of this. Deliberately trying to injure people is not football. He should have chosen a different sport if he had to hurt people to be better than them. Vieira was the brave one keeping getting the ball and taking the hits.
I never understand how thugs like Keane were able to have a playing career without someone removing them from the play after their demonstrations of thuggery. As a Sunday park player I never let someone get away with that brutality. One guy once hit me late dipping his shoulder into my sternum after the ball had gone. His comment was "It's a mans game".

As a kid watching Viera now makes you realize how underrated he was
People often say they believe Keane was better than Vieira, but honestly, I think Vieira was always better.
Only time Keane could ever say he got the better of Vieira, despite the head to head being slightly in favour of Keane for wins (7v5, which could easily be reversed if there were some decent refereeing in some of those encounters). On paper, they had similar careers. 7 top flight leagues, a UCL, but Vieira also had a World Cup, another WC final, and Euro 2000, AND was the beating heart of the Invincibles. Clear winner here is Vieira, who is, clearly one of the best ever DMs. Better than Kante or Makele. And daylight between Vieira and Keane.
Plus David Ellary did all he could to win you that semi in 99 - but Vieira won it in the end - by passing it to Giggs

"I've never heard anyone but the most rabid ManU supporters claim Keane was better than Vieira"
Laughable that you call Keane a " (comparatively) low-skill wrecking ball".
10 Goals in 173 games for Arsenal (his first 4 seasons, I even gave Vieira an extra year and season, to make it look closer)
Vieira was powerful, stronger and better at defending.
At age 30 Keane had played total games = 472 - 77 goals
At age 30 Vieira had played total games = 523 - 43 goals
(Keane nearly doubles Vieira in terms of goals per game at this point)
Vieira should have been scoring 10 goals a year with his head, from corners and free kicks with his strength, athleticism, power and height.
" It's just that Keane always had Scholes next to him"
Oh, always?
"Vieira would shine no matter who was next to him, whereas Keane would not have"
Really?
Good vs Spain in the 1st round knockout, Decent in the quarters vs Brazil, Average vs Portugal in the Semis, Let Materazzi outfight him for Italy's equalizer in the final, poor, then limped off in the 60th minute into the sunset
How about France in general....he had legends next to him....Keane had virtually nothing with Ireland....and yet, Vieira had 101 caps and 6 goals for France, while Keane had 9 goals in 67.....and had to shoulder far more of the attacking load in central midfield than Vieira did with the attacking superstars around him.
Get over it....Vieira was a great footballer, powerful, strong, ferocious and a driving force....but simply not as good all around as Keane.

Agree! I did not know the player Keane intentionally injured was Erling's dad! As a former ManU fan, I never liked Keane for his aggression. Vindictive character, no hero. I am glad Erling is doing so well for Man City, causing much chagrin to ManU fans. What a way to 'avenge' his dad.
Keane is portrayed as a lovable rogue when in fact he was a thug.
So next tackle I dropped, hit him with the ball flipping him over the top of me and winding him. When he got up to confront me I said "You set the standard, what do you want from now on"? Also being an Aussie he wanted to hit me so I invited him to in front of the Ref'. He thought better of it and the game continued without grief. I also had a mate ready to line him up if he did anything else that injured me.
It's a funny old game.

Keane bullied viera when united beat arsenal 6-1 .don’t remember arsenal giving united a beating that bad?
That’s really wonderful, composed play. Classic.
Keane appeared to have a win at all cost mentality,if he had played for a less notable team,he may have got sent off more often. Some players lost the fact that it is a GAME,it not war,you should get to go home to your family, fit ,healthy and happy. And why was Keane so combative, well he was a top class player, but his talent would never have lifted him into the elitist level of players,so he compensated, best way he knew how.
You are talking as if Vieira was some kind of saint. Watch the 6-1 thrashing of Arsenal by United where Keane bossed the midfield and Patrick was doing the kicking (roles reversed). It is easy to pick and choose games to spread "propaganda" about a particular player but these 2 were cut from the same cloth, just dyed in different colours.
If he had played for a less notable team? ......like Ireland? Not only did his talent lift Keane into the elitist of players, he made Richard Dunne ,Jason McAteer and Kevin Kilbane look like footballers.
@@colloquialsoliloquy6391 There are very few player that you could truly call elite, and Keane was not one of them, he was a top class premier league player, his record says that, but few ELITE players need to get into as many on field alterations as he did. And yes he would have dragged other players as you mention up.

Man Utd's greatest ever captain ....was not elite?........
Your logic for such a bizarre conclusion is extremely weak ,on field altercations define who is and isn't elite?
Nah ,no way ,with that logic you rule out a lot of elite players like Kahn ,Cantona and even Zidane.
"It was the single greatest individual performance I had seen on a pitch ,Keane simply, 'trampled' over my entire team" .
- LVG on Keane (Ireland v Holland 01)
Keane also obliterated Juve's midfield of Zidane ,Davids, Deschamps and Conte virtually by himself.
TH-cam "Roy Keane passing" and go "huh he's actually a boss at all types of passing"
(hopefully you'll see his ungodly piece of ball control v Bayern in the video)
Then realize ,"right, there are loads of videos of his passing goalscoring and tackles, but a distinct lack of "mistakes" videos.
The man was elite, easily the best captain of all time ,nevermind his skill.
@@colloquialsoliloquy6391 Firstly MU greatest captain, ever heard of a man call Charlton? 758 games,249 goals, English world cup winner,2 red cards in his whole career and at the club for 17 yrs not to mention winner of the Ballon d'OR or Bryan Robson461 games90 0dd goals or Dennis Law404 games 237 goals.Any one of those 3 player would rank above Keane. And really he was a snipe,he at times did his best to damage other players, nothing elitist about that,at times he was a mean nasty son of a bitch with evil intent, as I said it is a sport where you would expect to go home healthy and happy. He was a good player, but never elite.
What a player he was. Probably the best midfielder arsenal have ever had.
If the refs were as good to Arsenal as they were to Man Utd, I'm pretty sure Arsenal would have won a lot more both domestically and in Europe
FACTS
Couldn't even win europa league with var just means that arsenal will never have an European trophy in their trophy cabinet
@Ghostface That doesn't count. I'm a Manchester City and we have won that cup too, but it's a baby trophy
Man U didn't get the refs on their side in Europe. It's why Ferguson had such a shit record in Europe.
Nope. United were just better more often and for far longer. I know it's hard to be unbiased, but give it a whirl. It's not so bad.
