Just hearing that opening theme music, and I’m a kid again, lying on the living room floor in front of the tv. I’m so glad we had that time together, Carol, Vickie, Harvey, Tim & Lyle!❤️😀
Heart attack it was they say it was! She was too young to have such an issue. There are ladies who have more stones on them and may/may not have any medical concerns but heart attack don’t happen easy. I reckon she’d had emotional distress. Hearts can barely bear that load. I was heavier but lost significantly due to gallbladder inflammation which I had removed by surgery and been following a healthy lifestyle ever since. I feel good thank goodness but when I get emotionally tired my heart plays different types of music every now and then. lol Meditation levels up balance! Add herbal teas to that!
It’s honestly my favorite music performance ever on the show. It’s so joyous and really encapsulated what this show was about, people from different parts of the entertainment industry coming together to have fun and make people smile.
I couldn't get over how, in the last number, Mackie dressed each of the women differently, in clothing that flattered their bodies, but made them look cohesive.
The guy playing Stanley in the first sketch is Tom Lowell, a great character actor of the 50s-70s who appeared in many TV shows and films. Most remember him for his part in the star-packed Disney film "That Darn Cat" (1964'ish) with Hayley Mills. I met Tom a few times and he was very nice. Later in life he taught acting.
Thank you Carol Burnett and Company. You have given so much to us and now we get to enjoy your work all over again online! Carol, you are an angel sent to spread joy and laughter to our world. I hope to get a chance to meet you and thank you in person one day 🙂
Cass Elliot was a fantastic mover... Check out footage of her singing with The Mammas and The Papas.. she is so light footed she floats in tropical hued swing dresses and her white go-go boots!! A great performer of musical standards she could have been a successful star of her own TV variety show like all the ones she guested on had she lived a longer life.
She was exceptionally talented. But the entertainment industry was underrated her, as it was want to do to women. Lots of talent out there, and those exec hogs would use them up and toss them into the trash as some new teen could be exploited. But Cass livesforever in my memory, if not in anyone else's.
@@sealyoness - Strange that you would make such a comment in a program starring a woman and knowing that Cass was one of most active entertainers at that time, continuously on television and hardly considered a disposable commodity. People like to make believe history was a nightmare to certain classes of people. It was, but to men. At that time 1000's of men were being drafted and killed in the Vietnam war. Those that returned were shunned while suffering PTSD. Now there's a group that was truly treated like trash.
Fantastic musical performances as well as episode. Loved it!! The good ole' days of television. I loved all of her episodes. An iconic humor unknown these days. It is sad to say that I do not identify with the sense of humor of this era. Pollution .. Same issue today. We've come a long way, baby. Remember all the old cars? Happy St. Patrick's Day to all ☘🌿🍀 🙏
What you heard but misremembered is a joke that went viral at the time: "If Mama Cass had given Karen Carpenter her chicken sandwich, they'd both still be alive." Don't boo-hiss me; I didn't make it up. (I did pass it around, tho.)
I like that Cass was given a straight love song to sing, without any comedy elements, and she got a handsome man at the end. I did notice, however, that the dancers were often positioned in front of her. I didn’t expect the fat jokes in “As The Stomach Turns” but she seemed to be taking part willingly and with good humor. I’m sure she was OK with them.
She was not. To her these appearances were her part of her “job” though so she always went along with it. Many of her close friends and family have talked in great length that she did cry after some of these shows because the jokes about her weight were constant. If you watch her episode of Scooby doo, the whole 40 min episode is just digs at her being fat
I think if Ms. Elliot REALLY didn’t want any jokes at her expense, she could’ve said something to Carol or the writers. Wasn’t like she was a regular on the show. She could’ve just walked off and said “take the heavy jokes out, or I’m gone”. Then again it was only 3 networks. It could’ve backfired cuz it would’ve spread on all the shows that she’s “difficult” to work with.
The audience was often super rude, like asking Carol if she "was more attractive than Farrah Fawcett" and what her measurements were. They were often a**holes, but Carol was brilliant at deflecting them. They were often jerks.
Tom Lowell playing in the first skit as the visitor who gets into a scuffle with Harvey Korman. Tom Lowell played "Canoe" in the Disney film "That Darn Cat" with Haley Mills.
Will you ever post the Season 5, Episode 18, episode of the Carol Burnett show with Eydie Gorme and Vincent Price as guest stars, or is it unavailable on TH-cam? It was originally broadcast on CBS-TV on February 9,1972, and it was one of my favorite episodes of the show, with Vincent Price reciting " Desiderata" and Eydie Gorme singing "The Way of Love" in Spanish, and it had the "Elevator" sketch and the "House of Terror " sketch on it.
I'm kind of amazed that there's a parody of Andy Warhol in "As The Stomach Turns." Also "Suzie Shrimpton" must be a reference to the model Jean Shrimpton. The writers of "The Carol Burnett Show" were groovier than I would have guessed.
Looking back now, I see that Carol and crew were out to not exploit, but promote women entertainers who needed that boost. She truly knew, like Phyllis Diller and other lady entertainers, how cruel the male-dominated industry would be to women. Some of those men were no better than pimps, unashamed and eager to exploit their talents. She also promoted gentlemen of great talent and sensitivity. My view is we also should, and I hope it is the view of many others.
The weight jokes about Cass Elliot hurt nowadays tbh, as she died of malnourishment. Her weight was not something she could control since age 7, as she starved herself and lost 100 lbs and died of heart failure after the weight loss. She had severe weight struggles, and it must have hurt Cass to be in such a skit. May she RIP, a victim of a misogynistic patriarchy.
Be careful 'conservatives' will accuse your nice sentiment of being 'pc' and 'woke' i.e. kind and nice 'Conservatives' can't take being kind unless it's to them.
*???* The fiddler is Don Crichton, a lead dancer on the show wearing a fake mustache... he was also the grocery delivery man in the earlier sketch and the television director in the sketch after the Cass Elliot number.
The Mama Cass number was grossly overproduced. The costumes were awful, but maybe not for the 1970's, the Decade of Bad Taste. Bernadette is very pretty, and she got better as she aged, but hers is not a great voice; stop and imagine other singers singing 'It Had to Be You'.

That last number with carol, cass, and Bernadette is a real showstopper 🤩😍
Their voices together were beautiful.
It’s honestly my favorite music performance ever on the show. It’s so joyous and really encapsulated what this show was about, people from different parts of the entertainment industry coming together to have fun and make people smile.
Cass had a voice crystal clear and on point. Amazing voice.
And she could blend with anybody.
She's no Bernadette Peters.
She’s better than Bernadette Peters.
@@Kat-bu3bn No way, no how.
I guess if you like that little bubble gum voice you’d like Bernadette Peters better. I personally don’t care for it.
Cass is so funny doing her model poses. Love her.
The outfits from the this show are amazing, miss these kind old shows in our time, they are classic!
Bob Mackie was the costume designer on this show (also the Sonny & Cher Show) and he was a genius.
I couldn't get over how, in the last number, Mackie dressed each of the women differently, in clothing that flattered their bodies, but made them look cohesive.
At 52 years old this is still my favorite show!!!🥰🥰🥰
Just saw Carol live tonight in Salt Lake City. Took me back to my teens!
Cass Elliott had a beautiful voice. So lovely. The part where he said "We met at a parade" 🤣
Carol held her own with Mama Cass and Bernadette Peters.

Thank you Bob Mackie for getting Cass out of those tents she was wearing. And heels!
I know! He treated her as well as all the other women on the show. That gypsy dress she was wearing was stunning.
Mama Cass was beautiful and sings like a bird.❤️❤️❤️

The Carol Burnett Show was the greatest variety show ever!!! I miss it!!! 👍
They were all great during that period!
Love Carol, Thanks so much.
So nice to see Cass was given the role of a diva with her choice of men. Very unusual for that time. She was stunning.
Cass was gorgeous!

The draft was horrible but it’s also horrible to take one minority winning and think that all minorities then must have it easy.

The time when comedy was COMEDY!
💙🔥💙Love Mama Cass Always...
Loved this show as a kid. Holds up pretty good, too!
14 mins approx :
Sparkly gold & silver costumes,
skilled dancing : very nice:
Thank you!😊🇬🇧

I read somewhere Cass and Karen carpenter were friends I would love to have heard
them sing together
That would have been amazing!!
What you heard but misremembered is a joke that went viral at the time: "If Mama Cass had given Karen Carpenter her chicken sandwich, they'd both still be alive." Don't boo-hiss me; I didn't make it up. (I did pass it around, tho.)

The audience members all dressed to the nines, and courteous as well. A different time for sure.

Sometimes the audience asked very rude questions. She just went on to the next person.

Thank you! I knew he looked familiar, but I didn’t know why! I’ve watched That Darn Cat so many times - I should have recognized him!
Fix the comment to Hayley Mills
Always look forward to new posts! Thank you XOXO
This is actually: S5 *E8* · with Cass Elliott, Bernadette Peters - Nov 10, 1971
Thanks for this info.
So good
Bernadette Peters also did the voice of Sophie on Anastasia (1997) and appeared on Fantasia 2000 (1999)
Love these Carol Burnett Shows!💕

Great times
This would be the 71 -72 season. She was la ready talking about making a movie .that would be Pete and Tilly ,her second film.

Should’ve given Cass Eliot flattering outfits to wear
I love it...💜💜💜
I loved her show and all the cast members. I still do but her throat never moves when she does the Tarzan yell. I’ve always believed a machine helped.
That was Burnett's real voice with the yell...she did it in public at various events.
