    If you don't have an IR filter a deep red plus a polariser works well. Check your focus scale to see if it has a secondary (usually red) IR focus mark, focus normally, readjust focus to the IR focus point, add filter/filters and shoot. Exposure can be tricky but using ISO 12 should be a good rule of thumb.

    The visible spectrum in order is Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. It is easily remembered with Roy G Biv.

    Hey, I have an R72 filter, and some rollei 400, I want to shoot on my canon A1, with a 50mm lens, however
    1. How do you develop this film?
    -can I use ilford ilforsol, stop bath & rapid fixer
    2. What ISO do I shoot this at?
    -do I meter through my camera’s built in light meter
    -if I’m metering, do I meter for like iso 12 with the filter off or iso 400 and just meter through the filter?
    -do I need to change the metering stops on my camera (the canon A1 can adjust for metering a few extra stops without an iso change)
    Thanks again anyone can answer my questions and queries!

    I have been using this film for a while now and find it best exposed at ASA 12 through a Cokin infrared filter and processed in ID11 diluted 1+1 at 9 seconds at 20 degrees C. It can be quite dense and contrasty so don't over-expose of over-develop it.

    Isn't there a focus correction when shooting IR? On the historic Kodak 4x5 sheet film I used to have to apply some fraction of the focal length of the lens (more extension, usually just a bit). You can tailor the degree of sensitivity to infrared light by using various filters: IR (#29), #25, #15, #12, and #8 in EK series. Each has its own factor so it does get fiddly in the field. Very good samples of IR prints. Very!

  • @mueslimuncher1950

    You don't mention the focus shift between infrared and visible light, and the fact that many older lenses have a seperate index mark to enable you to adjust the focus to compensate. With an SLR this means first composing and focusing normally without a filter, then adding the filter and correcting the focus before making the exposure.

    Thanks for the video - I recently purchased the JCH Streetpan 400 from you guys for my "new to me" Pentax ME Super (Like the one I got in the early 80's as my first film camera) ... I have also a 720nm filter for the 35mm lens ... can I treat this in the same way as the film in this vlog?
    Also - Can I "trust" the camera to meter with the filter on or should I meter without filter and increase exposure 8 - 10 bracketed stops?
    TIA
    (BTW The roll of 24 exp Kentmere 400 that I shot with the camera to check it's function has been great and am happy to report that £60 on a 2nd hand camera is well worth it!)

    • @krislockyear428
      @krislockyear428 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Focus normally without the filter. Then look at the distance ring on the lens and note where it is against the normal distance mark. Adjust the focus so that the distance is now against the infrared mark. This is only necessary if you are using an infrared filter.

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah good point!! I forgot to talk about focus - yes infrared focuses slightly differently than visible light (thanks to the mechanics of longer wavelengths). Some lenses have the mark to show how to compensate, otherwise shoot with small aperture (f16 or smaller) to mitigate for the offset. Does that help?

    • @davidmurray1304
      @davidmurray1304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was looking for this info last night on OL forums. It seems that the lens should be refocussed to between 0.25 - 0.5 % of its focal length ie move the lens focus ring to that much of a shorter distance setting. In practice the focus-shift with IR won't matter if the subject is landscape and/or if aperture is smaller than at f8, ie has a higher f-number.

    In my experience giving 8 - 10 stops more exposure gives very blown-out highlights. i suggest doing a lot of bracketing with the first film. Note that the amount of IR light varies with time of day.

    • @AnalogueWonderland

    Great video, thanks for doing this. Been meaning to shoot IR for ages but always feels a bit inaccessible. So am I right in thinking that any red filter will have an effect, but the darker the better? Or do I need a specific IR filter? And as I'd be getting a second-hand A36 filter, how do I know how many stops to add?

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on - any red filter works but a proper IR-rated one will be best. The filter should also give you the technical details according to it's specs - typically it's 4-5 stops

    How does snow reflect IR light compared to leaves? And what speed should you shoot at if you're attempting portraits?

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ben, I am not too sure about your first question, perhaps some more research and another video on the subject would be good. But in terms of portraiture, I think it depends on the situation. If the subject is still, I'd normally aim for tripod and 1/125
      But if no tripod, then make sure the shutter speed is a higher number than focal length to avoid shake
      I think aperture is more of a thing than shutter speed on portraits. F2.8 can be amazing if you can keep both eyes in focus :) Emma
