  • As this series on how to build a garage comes to an end, I hope you all enjoyed it. I know I didn't show every detail, and I know the content can be much better, but that's what is exciting. I've just started this journey for the most part and hope you stick around. I plan on dropping as many tips, techniques, and hopefully entertaining content I can as I learn and grow.
In this episode I show how the attic is insulated, the concept of the concrete floor, and how we managed to get the windows installed after our steel was already up.
My favorite part of the video however, was installing that versetta stone.
So hopefully you will hit that subscribe button and drop me a comment if you liked it. Also, I would appreciate feedback on what you did and didn't like as well as what you'd like to see in the future. I will also make it back up to this job either during or after the concrete pour to get a final wrap up video.

Awesome videos, you remind me of my oldest brother. He was a Norm Abram type contractor. He had a roofing card, (it covered everything). Oh, he had a great sense of humor and was an absolute nut about detail. He always had the latest and greatest tools. He built custom "parade" homes and may shops similar to this one. He died of cancer a few years ago, I'm so glad there are tradesmen that take great pride in detail and building the best way. I'll never have the knowledge and skills he acquired through 40 plus years of experience, but I try. Not the fastest, but I get it done. Again thanks for the thorough videos.

I found your videos when I was looking for ideas for my garage, and though "here is another quick and cheap build". I was right on the quick, but boys was I wrong on the cheap! Your attention to details is flawless, and your logic perfect, spending time where it count, and saving time and $ where it doesn't. I especially like your comment about the " Caulk will fail over time, but physical flashing will last the life of the building". Too many builders chose cheap short-lived solutions. For reference, I am a owner-builder, but recently completed two cottages that got the LEED Gold certification, so I can recognize quality. You guys are awesome, and I would not hesitate to hire you! Thanks for the great video series!

You asked people to let you know if, because of watching your channel, they've decided to build a pole-framed building. First, your channel is extremely helpful - thanks. Second, I intend to build a pole-framed building using your methods. It will be 40x60 with a 20' wall. It will have a shop and commercial kitchen downstairs and a hardship apartment upstairs. Don't know what involvement you'd like to have, but I'll take what I can get. Mostly if I could get information on sourcing of the custom parts you have made like the post anchor brackets, laminated posts, etc., that's what I need the most. Wonder if you'd be willing to let me fly out and help on a new project in return for learning from you? I'm not as good as I was when I was young, but I'm steady.

My father had a haybarn built in 1972. 40x90. It's still standing but on because I installed new posts on the south side of the building. Most of the original 4x6 treated posts are rotted complete at the ground. I had one that just kept rotting from the weight on it. I had to jack up that truss 10". The poles didn't go in as straight as I wanted but that was a big chore getting 20' posts up. I built the typical laminated type with three 2x6s glued and screwed together. Still got a lot of work to do on that barn. I'm going to build a 60' x 120' in the near future.

Let me tell you a little story. I use to cut wood on a table saw on the ground too. One day a board kicked back on me and hit me in the shin. I got sick to my stomach and that's all I remember. It was daytime when I was cutting. When I woke up it was night and the saw was still running. The bord hit me so hard it made a hole in my skin about the size of a quarter all the way to the bone. I suggest you practice using a stand. I wouldn't be here today writing this to you if I didn't fall away from the saw when I passed out.

    • @OGSnoberry
      @OGSnoberry 6 ปีที่แล้ว

How the hell is that even possible? A table saw kicking back a piece of wood so hard it bored a quarter sized hole in your shin, which somehow knocked you unconscious for several hours?

I think this is weird way to build. Where I live, first thing is to remove top soil (~3ft) then we add rough gravel, 2ft layer on edges and 3ft at center of the building. Then comes mold, rebar, and styrofoam and heating cabes/pipes if heated building. Then is time for Concrete pour. It is called the foundation. Everyting else is built on top of foundation.

So, would love somebody to correct me, I’m not an expert in this or anything, just a home owner who likes to build stuff cause I’m too broke to pay somebody else to. As per my knowledge you don’t want the vapor barrier under the tar paper. So if the manufacturer of the stone veneer calls for the tar paper wouldn’t you want to have just run the tar paper along the bottom there, then nailed the drip edge for the upper metal over the tar paper and then the vapor barrier should be run over the drip edge and taped down to the top if it. Then the stone veneer below the drip edge. That way everything is shingled but more importantly any moisture that gets between the vapor and tar doesnt just sit there.

Hi guys from 'How to built a garage...',
in your great videos you are using claw hammers /carpenter's hammers similar to mine, which is a Swedish Hultafors TR 20. It weigths about 20oz. When nailing 2 1/2" brads I've got the feeling that a lighter one, say about 16oz, might be fitting better.
Can you tell me the weight of your claw hammers you were using in your absolutely superb videos?
    Thank you very much,
    sincerely, Heck

YEAH I am really not picturing how you handle a floating slab over the footings.

AFTER WATCING ALL YOUR EPISODES I WAS DISAPOINTED NOT TO SEE HOW THE CONCRETE FLOOR WAS RETROFITED UNDER THE WOOD FOOTER THAT IS PRACTICALLY LAYING ON THE DAMP GROUND? I WOULD HAVE SPECIFIED A CONCRETE FOOTER ? ? ?

He says at the end that he'll be back to document how the pour turns out.

The same way everyone adds concrete to their pole buildings since the dawn of time. Plenty of videos on pouring concrete floors into barns.

Just finished watching all of the videos on the building of the garage ! I hope I can find a contractor 1/2 as good as you did . Where are you located , and do you travel ?

I know this build was over 4 yrs ago, but did you ever do a follow up video showing the concrete & showing it completely finished ?

Great job!! Watched this complete series. I'm about to build a 36x30x16 garage. Same concept, timber framing and metal siding. My question, why couldn't I frame the traditional way bottom plate, double top plate 16 on center? I'll be using 2x6" and slab is poured . Thx for the help.

Awesome videos and work as usual.
Do you have any footage on ceiling and insulation install for non-flat or cathedral style trusses?
My garage has a more open ceiling.
