Okay, the reason for that was, because when I was writing the script, I'd pictured Wasuta over that portion, but figured the video of theirs I used would work better over the "worlds of their own" part. Keyakizaka46 was actually the group I was thinking of when writing that portion, but I kind of had to wing it for the "positive lyrics" part lol
I'm so glad there is an english video about it! BiS totally changed my vision of Idols before I even know the group exist. Most of the groups I like are influenced by BiS, or are BiS' influence (like Jun Togowa/Yapoos, she is iconic!) Looking forward a 2nd and 3rd gen video. I think the 3rd generation has found their own identity.
Thank you for watching! I wasn't the biggest fan of them when I first heard them, but before knowing their history I'd only listened to "Re:STUPiD" and thought "THIS is what changed the Idol landscape!?" If it wasn't for this video, I wouldn't have known about their LPs, DiS, BiS Kaidan or really anything outside of what's on Spotify. Also, I only briefly learned about Jun Togawa thanks to BiS. I'm making decent headway into the 2nd Gen video now and I'm trying to bide my time for the 3rd Gen one...
Wow. I'm really glad you made this video because I'm jumping down such a deep rabbit hole right now. The video itself is very well done too. Earned a sub.
I'm in that rabbit hole right now and man I am glad to have finally find a video that explains what the fuck is going on in here 😂 The only two video I found before this one were in spanish
BiS still has some idols that they directly influenced like Pikarin/Hikari Shiina , You'll Melt More!, and Bellring Gir;s' Heart/There There Theres/Nilky. One of the thing glossed over is that BiS not only changed the way idols presented themselves and acted but also the sound idols could perform in be it punk, rap, krautrock, metal, EDM, trance, Noise Rock, etc.
Thanks for watching! And, yeah, I think the ending was me just generalizing the impact they made since I didn't want to ramble on any longer. I was mostly focusing on the alt-idol boom and didn't really branch out too far past that. I've still got a lot to learn about Idols post-BiS, anyways.
@@capnanthony7178 Likewise, I think BABYMETAL has had a similar influence on a ton of alt-idols ranging from NECRONOMIDOL (some of their members have literally gone to BABYMETAL shows) to LADYBABY (whose members once did karaoke to Gimmie Choco & started shortly after BABYMETAL went viral with Gimmie Chocolate) to FRUITPOCHETTE (which started shortly after BABYMETAL, in 2012)
Thank you for making this video. Cannot even imagine how much effort you put in to this. BiS had great discography while most people pay attention only to their anti-idol behaviour. Until today BiS as a group came back twice with totally new members and each era has their own dramas and great songs.
Thank you for watching and for your comment! I appreciate it! Yeah, I enjoyed discovering BiS' music as I went along (specifically DiE and Fly), but I agree; I think their music is overlooked by their antics, despite their sound being a big part of their overall image. I LOVE 2nd Generation BiS; the members, the music, I was hooked on everything about them from the get-go. I haven't been following the current line-up all that closely, but I have enjoyed some of their tracks and know that fans really love the members.
Thank you for this, man! I discovered PIGGS last year and that made me look into BiS! I was not DiS-appointed! But I had already been into LADYBABY, BROKEN BY THE SCREAM, GUSO DROP, and BURST GIRL for several years before...
hope youre doing well brother, sad to see you didnt continue with the youtube stuff, your channel is increibly high quality. respect. hope you found something even better
This is fascinating! Thanks for this. I've been intrigued for a while about how this all began having first read about BiS Kaidan (and got sucked in enough that I'm foolhardy enough to have spent way too much on that box set) amongst all of the other ridiculous 'collaborations' that Hijokaidan have had (which were basically just putting noise over someone else's music and adding "-Kaidan" to the name").
Hey, thank you for watching and for leaving a comment; I really appreciate it! There's a strange beauty to BiS Kaidan, in my opinion; getting to hear the BiS songs through this storm of noise adds something powerful to the tracks. I'd LOVE to have any form of physical media related to BiS Kaidan, but I for sure bought the digital albums after making this video. primal. is just perfect. In gathering BiS Kaidan footage, I found Hatsune Kaidan, and it was incredible to see Hatsune Miku performing with Hijokaidan in these dingy, underground venues lol
Deep gratitude for this informative look at BIS. I find their debut remarkable for the great sound in the music, arrangements and lyrics. Despite the antics, some great music was produced and not properly recognized by the world. Any band is a consortium of talented people that can inspire one another, wish the original members could have stayed together a bit longer. Good job covering this unique band, Thank you
Thank you for watching! In hindsight, the final line-up of BiS wasn't even together that long, were they? It's still fascinating to know this all happened in the span of four years. Look at the movement they sparked, the careers they launched and the mark they left. It's wild.
Even today 2021 a BiS song from one of their first 2 albums will come up on my random playlist and will listen in amazement enjoying the great sound and harmonies. Perhaps my fav is 2nd song on 1st album titled BiS, absolutely love the acapella and last minute of pure guitar riffs. Your effort here expanded my knowledge and likely many others, Thanks again.
Thank you! I appreciate that and you watching! Definitely try to put as much time into each project as possible, so to hear that it paid off is awesome.
@@capnanthony7178 been in the business a long time, seen a lot of docs. This one is great! I learned a lot. Thanks for the attention to detail! - Jymbo // SYLENT STORM
Thank you so much for making this video on 1st gen BiS! Seriously I appreciate all the footage and even the additional info on what all the members are up to now. Actually I credit your insightful and awesome video on getting me into BiS and other alternative idol groups 😭❤️ Subscribed and looking forward to your future videos on more awesome alt-idol groups
Thank you so much for watching, for commenting and for the support!! Their story is insane and was so much fun to work on and I'm glad you enjoyed it and became a BiS fan from it! Their music is still incredible, imo. But, there are TONS of other wild and awesome artists out there redefining the alt-Idol scene, even today. It's an ever growing world that's mind-boggling and so much fun. Currently working on a MASSIVE project on another group, which will hopefully be done soon 🤞 Again, thank you for your kind words and the support!
Amazing job. I saw the documentary as it was shared on the BiSH discord server. The amount of work put in 40min in nothing short of outstanding. I'll keep watching your videos!
Ah, thank you so much! I appreciate that and I'm glad so many people have enjoyed/learned from it! It was tons of fun to make and I didn't even realize how many English speaking Idol fans there were, so it's been dope to see the reactions to it. Makes me feel like I've discovered some type of hidden club lol. It's cool to see that this project has been making the rounds in Discord servers and whatnot too!
I've just started getting into the new BiS and, musically, I enjoy their work, but it agree about the lack of a rebellious spirit. Seeing some of their lives, it's clear that they're taking a totally different route now. My favorite shows will always be the ones in the cramped venues with a packed audience; that environment just made BiS feel like this special taboo group. Not at all a diss against the 3rd Gen., but their lives haven't had that same effect on me yet.
Thank you for watching, and I'm glad to hear it! The most unfortunate thing about Idol groups is probably getting into the ones who are already gone, like BiS lol
Good video. It's interesting to see actual musical group embody a counter movement/criticism of idol culture when other pop culture products do so timidly (Wake-up Girl, in particular Seven Idols OVA and season 1) or are once-in-a-decade ufos (Perfect Blue).
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Yeah, 1st Gen. BiS was a unique act, for sure. There are other groups who've been inspired by them, or have tried to embody their image and while it's still interesting and cool to see, it'll never recapture what BiS did. They pretty much just did whatever they wanted for a little while lol I'll also have to check out Wake-Up Girl and Perfect Blue. Never seen them, but they look interesting!
@@capnanthony7178 They're both good. Wake up Girl is an idol anime which dared to approach the debut of a no-name band realistically and to show the uglier side of the business. Except the anime wasn't as hardcore as Perfect Blue, which is an animated movie by the late Satoshi Kon and which is centered on the tough life of an idol with mental health problems.
I'll definitely have to track down Wake-Up Girl, because that one's really piqued my interest. Gonna have to watch it ASAP. Perfect Blue's been on my watchlist for a little while but I've never looked into it for whatever reason. Got a good excuse to prioritize it now, though! Thank you for the recs!
Thank you for watching! It's nearly done; just gotta iron out some more animations, b-roll, etc. But, I hope everyone enjoys it more than this one so far!
I really appreciate that and thank you for watching! I love talking about this sort of thing and learning about it myself, so these videos have been a blast for me!
Great video and info. I just recently got into BiSH which led me to BiS. I've always loved alternative music. I was a punk rocker in the late 1970's. I'm happy to see that the torch is still being carried by newer generations.
Hey, thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! I appreciate it! Yeah, BiSH is what led me to look into BiS too; they've definitely opened the gates to Alternative Idol for a lot of non-Japanese fans, it seems. The Alt. Idol boom & Punk movements definitely share some common traits, like anti-conformist aesthtics, fast-paced, heavier music and more. I know WACK's even used some Japanese punk bands' logos as inspiration before too and other groups' shows get insanely wild. It's an interesting genre/movement to watch unfold in real-time. It's also interesting how many different generations of fans this unique world finds; it's really cool to see!
Thanks for the comment and for watching, I appreciate them both! And, apologies for the inactivity this last (almost) year, I've been working on my next project, which is taking me FAR, FAR longer than I ever anticipated. But, it'll be multiple parts and super duper in-depth. Slowly chipping away at it day-by-day, but I'm always making progress!
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it! Yeah, BiS was groundbreaking for the time, and helped reshape what can be considered Idol. Their music slaps too, which helps!
Great video. Only thing I want to point out is when you mispronounced Kamiya Saki first joint post-BiS, Pla2me as pla-two-me when it should be pronounced as “puranime” if written in katakana, プラニメ. Pla2me is a stylized roman spelling for puranime, where Pla is pura, 2 (two) pronounced as Ni in Japanese and then Me as in anime.
Yeah, I never would've gotten that from just reading it alone. Saying it out loud now makes more sense, though. Lesson learned; I'll be focusing more on proper pronunciation for Gen. 2's video.
My favorite Idol Groups are BiSH, BLACKNAZARENE, Malcolm Mask McLaren, Maison Book Girl and Yanakoto Sotto Mute. Without Pour Lui and BiS there would be none of them.
I love BiSH too, they're part of the reason I even looked into BiS. It's wild how far their influence stretched; almost like something out of a folk tale.
@@capnanthony7178 i accidentally found BiS Kaidan - Eat it like 3 years ago with little to no views. Never knew the story behind BiS, their beliefs of motives behind it all. It was a blast watching such a good documentary about them, and i can't wait to watch the other longer one i found on your channel about BiS reimagined. I'll check it after work for sure, hope your channel grows bigger and bigger, you deserve it.
I LOVE BiSKaidan's version of "primal"; of all the renditions of that track, that one sounds the most primal lol. And, I appreciate you checking out the video on BiS' 2nd Generation; they're a totally different group, for sure and their story is complete chaos. Thank you for the kind words, too. Doing my best to keep working away at these projects, learn more about these groups and tell their stories as best as possible.
@@capnanthony7178 I'll be sure to check out "primal"! I didn't watch the video about 2nd generation yet, didn't have time. I know they're totally different, I'll check it out when I'm not exhausted after work. If you say their story is chaotic, i have to be focused to not miss it all 🤣 Keep up the good work!
Great overview of first generation BiS. As you say, a very important and influential group who really need more English language coverage. Can I encourage you to pimp this video to the likes of Netflix, Amazon, or even the BBC (or the companies that work with them), as I think you have captured the essence of a great story that a big-ish company wouldn't need to invest a huge amount in to get a captivating documentary, or even mini-series, out of. With the growing popularity of Japanese music in the West, the time is right to shine a light on this story. Minor quibble. I think you should have a go at the Japanese pronunciation of people's names. It's mostly just a case of adjusting the way you say vowels. For example, having watched a lot of stuff on the PIGGS channel, they seem to say Pour Lui's name more like 'Poo-Lee'. Minor thing though - I appreciate it's hard work and some things are not guessable (e.g. Pla2me). Your script, pacing, attention to detail, editing and presentation style was otherwise spot on. I look forward to the second generation video.
Thanks for watching and for the words of kindness! I'd love to see a professional approach to this topic, or even an English WACK docuseries with interviews and the whole nine yards, and I'd love even more to be involved in it somehow! I gave the Japanese pronunciations more of a try in the second generation video and I think most of them turned out okay. I just love that through this, I've discovered tons of English-speaking BiS/Idol fans. That's probably the coolest part of this whole project!
nice video!! I was scared it was gonna be like one of the many, many bad articles I've seen on og BiS, but you quickly proved me otherwise, great job dude. can't wait to see the BiS2 video whenever it comes out :)
Thank you for that and for watching! I appreciate it! I've only heard about really bad English articles on BiS and Idols in general, but I've never really been able to find one aside from the "10 DARK Secrets of the Japanese Idol Industry" nonsense. It's definitely not the shadiest industry on earth; but this story, and many others, deserve recognition for being as insane as they are alone. It's just fascinating, even without stretching the truth. Oh, and the 2nd Gen. BiS video is coming soon...like, soon-soon.
@@capnanthony7178 yeah good articles are really few and far between, the only good stuff I've seen is from alt idol specific blogs and some japanese music blogs. also sweet!! I'll be tuning in
Thank you for watching and for the response! BBTS is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of Alt. Idols Post-BiS, especially musically. They're on the other end of the musical spectrum and just defy Idol expectations lol. Plus, they're really, really good.
Excellent, excellent piece of research--haven't found anything quite like it on the subject.. I am lucky to have seen this video today, which I believe is one day before the Gen 2 video...?
Thank you for watching! I appreciate that, and I'm hard at work on the 2nd Gen video too! Gotta do some digging to find other interesting Idol stories to talk about soon as well!
Yeah, Keyakizaka46 were unique, even among the other Sakamichi Series groups. That sound is hard to recreate and I'll always love Kuroi Hitsuji and Ambivalent. I don't think I even knew about their disbandment (or rebranding) until, like 3 weeks after their final single. It's brutal when groups disband, especially when it's just kind of like "Well, that's it..." with no build or anything.
@@capnanthony7178 totally, they just rebrand right after they loss their center. They should prove to us that even techi is not there anymore they can continue being keyaki. But instead they rebranded. Kinda sad and disapointed tbh😢

BiSH is my favorite group by far, really digging their new stuff so far and Wasuta is a close second. Also some GO TO THE BEDS, GANG PARADE and EMPiRE here and there. Really exciting year for WACK and the Sakamichi series so far!

Musically, ASP hasn't wowed me yet. Don't get me wrong, I like what they've released so far, but there isn't anything that's really caught my attention like the other WACK groups. It's still early in their run, though and I do dig their look, aesthetics and presentation.

@@KataomoiFinally Some of the things she's done in the years since definitely make me question her sanity lol. She definitely knows how to stand out, but most of the ways she does so are questionable, to say the least. I think most of the members just rolled with the punches, because it was different, unique and they were standing out. The ones that left (namely Terashima and Nakayama) left, because they disagreed with the direction she was taking the group. She had an idea to spite her manager, but it wound up redefining the presentation of, misic performed by and what could be done in Idol. I don't think she set out to start a revolution of sorts, but she certainly succeeded in doing so.
You undersold Tentenko, she made some 80's-style electro/synth pop bangers when she left. Not a huge fan of BiS or noise music but I love a few of Tentenko's songs.
The amount of work she's put out in the nearly seven years since BiS disbanded is incredible. I know she's become a big, big name since then too, which is awesome. It's always nice to see former Idols become majorly successful in their own pursuits after leaving their groups. But, I probably did her work injustice by summing it up as shortly as I did. Still love her music videos, though.
Full disclosure: I completely overlooked both that and the ODD FUTURE music videos. I didn't even find out about DiS until the script was almost finished. I think I was more concerned about wrapping it up than anything, but I do regret not mentioning either of those topics or using the end of the Budokan concert in hindsight. But, it's a learning experienced; and I've learned that, if at all possible, I'm gonna include as much info as possible in the future.
I'm back! Now watched the Idol Is Dead film several times. Love it and really like the tunes as well. Still trying to track down Idol Is Dead 2, a difficult film to access. The main reason I'm back is that I'm trying to watch the video featuring BiS in black and white striped clothes using spiked clubs. I've seen it on TH-cam once and can no longer find it; help! Finally, would there be a DVD/VHS video collection of the early video's?
@@capnanthony7178 the tea in the announcement was that they supposedly formed just to perform at the Budokan then disband. Which feels kinda like a bis-related petty plot from rinahamu if ya feel me there. 👀👀 since bis never got to perform at the actual budokan.

LMAO I hope that's true and that the past few years have all been one big scheme to get back at the Budokan staff for screwing BiS over in 2014. Rinahamu casually formed a massively successful group with this one goal in mind. I've gotta check out some articles on it, because that's priceless.
I tried to plug as many groups/artists that I like as I could in this one, and @onefive had me hooked since their first song; I'm convinced they can't put out bad music.
Thank you for watching and for your comment, I appreciate it! I did end up making a 2nd Gen. BiS video and their story is absolutely wild; more so than the original's in a few ways.
Yeah, I think I'm just apprehensive about mispronouncing/absoluely butchering something unintentionally. Definitely gonna work on that more in the future, and actually listen to certain words spoken (when available) to help.
From what I've seen of their live performances, I think they were incredible. BiS always did whatever they wanted, but it was turned up to a new extreme at those lives, and I love that the members only half paid attention at the BiS Kaidan shows. I really like the albums too, but I enjoy their first album more than the second. Their version of "primal." is undoubtedly my favorite one; it feels like layers of the song have been peeled away, being embraced by the noise that only intesifies with each chorus. I love the lone scream that rings out with the guitar at the end too.
Ayy, thank you for that! Tried looking into Dear Stage and it was a lot to take in originally, but maybe I'll dive deeper into it later. I just started understanding it more, thanks to these videos.
Alright so maybe someone here can help me. I discovered this video and really enjoyed it. I decided to watch the movie Idol is Dead since it’s available on Amazon Prime. I loved it. Now here is the problem. I really want to see Idol is Dead 2, but that doesn’t seem to be as easy. Does anyone know where I can purchase it, view it, whatever? Thanks in advance.
Okay, so I've done some digging, and I managed to find three copies of the blu-ray for sale. Two on Yahoo!Auctions Japan & one on the Japanese Amazon. I couldn't find it streaming anywhere (found the first one on TH-cam), so it looks like the blu-ray may be the way to go. Unlike the first one, the sequel never received subtitles and I don't think it was ever released outside of the country. The first one was picked up by a film festival, which is why it's way easier to find. Hopefully, you find a simpler way to watch it or stumble across it online, but I'll keep searching.
@@capnanthony7178 Damn, so am I going to have to watch this with Google Translate running the whole time? Because I will. Haha. Thanks for digging for me. You’re a real MVP.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, a lot of groups just kind of did whatever they wanted back in the beginning lol. Mosh pits, crowdsurfing, and other things you'd typically see at a heavier show. The early days of the alternative Idol scene were fascinating, to say the least.
Brilliant. I was vaguely aware of the idol phenomenon, no more than that. Bis make the Sex Pistols look like children playing in a sandpit. I will be following up the alternative idol genre now.
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! I appreciate it! BiS' shenanigans definitely left an important mark and are still interesting to revisit. The Alt. Idol scene is really fascinating, even now, because there are groups that will do almost anything to up the ante and stand-out. Plus, the music's really great too!
Yes, that's awesome! I'm pretty sure it's available to watch online, but I prefer physical media myself, whenever possible. The 2nd one's a challenge to find any copies of, but I hope you enjoy the original!
Sure thing, it's called "Idol Is Dead 2: Non-Chan's Great Propaganda War" (アイドル・イズ・デッド-ノンちゃんのプロパガンダ大戦争) and it was released in 2014. Not sure if it's easier to find now, but I remember having trouble finding it anywhere.
I found it on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but I ordered it through fromjapan.com. That shirt always finds its way back there, so just keep an eye out for it and you'll definitely catch it.
I know DiS was a goofy, probably meant to be one-off project (until Rau Def done goofed), but I would've loved to see the FSU line-up put out a music video or something. We could've had a straight up war between them, because Rau Def responded following DiS' response. The possibilities that were never realized...
NON-TiE up is definitely one of my favorite videos, plus they're a major part of BiS history. Also, anytime I can work them in somewhere, I always try to!
Thank you for watching and for your comment! Yeah, Pour Lui is something else; definitely flipped the Idol scene on its head and it never really got flipped back over.
Did not think about it like that, but the similarities are striking. Still, BiS would be the outlier from that, as they were marketed as "Idols you can touch." Revolutionizing so many industries.
@@capnanthony7178 I don’t know how far you got/get into AKB48 and the rest of the 48 groups and the like but the tag line behind their concept is “idols you can go and meet” so I guess that’s just Pour Lui and management making another dig. Same goes for IDOL’s tag line being “let’s buy the same CD over and over” being a dig at 48G fans buying hundreds of the same CDs to attend handshake events and skewing sales figures/perceived popularity as a consequence. Idol culture is wild honestly. P.S: absolutely loved this video
@@AnarchisticLemmings While I'm not really into them, these videos have helped me learn about them, mostly to understand context above all else.
Amazing video. Thank you! And I'd really like to see a BiS 2nd gen one!
Thank you for watching, I appreciate it! It's already in the works, and I'm especially hyped to continue covering BiS.
Dude, your channel is so underrated! This is fascinating, glad I found it!
Thank you! I appreciate that and thank you for watching!
This is VERY well-made.
The best idol group in the world, not really interested in new version of BiS they dont really have that rebellious spirit
One minute in and I’m already a fan of bis
this was a really good video!!! i learned a lot, and will be checking bis out :)
Oh man, I’m a bit late to the party on this video, but I’d love to see you do a video on the second generation Bis.
Thank you for watching! It's nearly done; just gotta iron out some more animations, b-roll, etc. But, I hope everyone enjoys it more than this one so far!
Your channel is so underrated
Thank you! I appreciate you watch and for your comment. Still hard at work on the next project, trying to one-up myself as much as possible!
Great video! I would like to see the second gen vid !
Thanks for watching!! And, the 2nd Gen. video is dropping this Friday, July 2nd, at 8:30 P.M. (EST time)!
Very informative video. Thank you so much for posting. I have a new genre of music to get caught up on!
Underrated channel. Thank you for your efforts.
Sadly you don't seem very active, your video was awesome.
@@capnanthony7178 loving idol music is a struggle by itself, thanks again.
I never heard of this (not really in to the whole idol culture), but they sound AWESOME.
2's video.
THIS CHANNEL IS SO UNDERRATED
Might make this comment the new banner lol...But, thank you! I appreciate the compliment!
Pleeeaase make a Gen.2 Bis video!
Thanks for watching, and will do! Gonna work on something else next, but after that will be nore BiS!
Thanks! Greetings from Germany. I would have omitted the first minute, but the rest is good.
Greetings right back and glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching.
INCREDIBLE research, great video, thank you dude! I love it
No, thank you for making time to check it out! I really appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed it! BiS' story was too insane not to tell!

I didn't watch the video about 2nd generation yet, didn't have time. I know they're totally different, I'll check it out when I'm not exhausted after work. If you say their story is chaotic, i have to be focused to not miss it all 🤣 Keep up the good work!
This is awesome!

Thank you for watching and for the response! BBTS is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of Alt. Idols Post-BiS, especially musically. They're on the other end of the musical spectrum and just defy Idol expectations lol. Plus, they're really, really good.

I love keyakizaka46, and havent find any group who can replace them. It hurt me😭
Yeah, Keyakizaka46 were unique, even among the other Sakamichi Series groups.

In terms of the music scene, for sure lol. As I'm learning, there are dozens of stories like this one and I just love it.
Somehow really surprised you don’t mention the Cannonball Run at all 😂
Full disclosure: I completely overlooked both that and the ODD FUTURE music videos.

Thanks for watching! I honestly didn't even catch that announcement myself. 2020 sucks. Here's to hoping that they have awesome post-CY8ER ventures!

How do you feel about BiS Kaidan
From what I've seen of their live performances, I think they were incredible. BiS always did whatever they wanted, but it was turned up to a new extreme at those lives, and I love that the members only half paid attention at the BiS Kaidan shows. I really like the albums too, but I enjoy their first album more than the second. Their version of "primal." is undoubtedly my favorite one; it feels like layers of the song have been peeled away, being embraced by the noise that only intesifies with each chorus. I love the lone scream that rings out with the guitar at the end too.
Discovered this while watching Dear Stage videos. Love it bro, sub from me.

The Alt.
