Rocco is actually, shockingly, only one ejection away from the second most ejections in Twins history. But his ejections are usually fairly tame. This ejection would make Gardy blush.

@Tejesh Patel I’m anti managers using them as literally the only tactic for strategy. Baldelli is one of the absolute _worst_ managers in the league for this. He manages his team like it’s one of those shitty mobile “games “ that plays itself for you and all you have to do is just equip better gear than the enemy and you automatically win. He completely neglects that baseball is actually played by humans whose statistics and effectiveness are fluid
That catcher was robbed. That was INCREDIBLE footwork.
The catcher was slow to tag. If it wasn't for his feet preventing the runner from touching home base, the runner would have made it. Watch 1:14 at x.25 speed.

@@FighteroftheNightman The throw didn't take him there, though. His need for perfect positioning did. He could have made the catch from his original position, but it would have allowed the runner to score. The movement wasn't to field, it was to prepare for the tag, which the rule does not protect.

In every sport. Refs also point shave in basketball and rob fighters in boxing. Sad.
Yeah it happens in every sport, but there are moments like this in baseball (and I would contend basketball as well) where the subjectivity of referee weighs WAY too heavily on the outcome. Like, I get the NFL having issues with PI, no-calls, "what is a catch" dilemma, etc. That sport has moments of subjectivity that get in the way, but nothing as discretely obvious as missed strikes/balls, NY over-turning correct calls, or in basketball the ticky tacky fouls that now rule the game... all those are so much more egregious than what the NFL has to complain about. I'll be the first to say NFL refereeing has to improve, but when you look at the other major sports leagues in the US, the NFL is probably the best refereed league. And that is saying something. Meaning the other leagues are practically at the mercy of referees and it rears it head on every single weekend. Football has a handful of monumentally bad calls in the year, but man... it isn't every single weekend where referees decide outcomes. Umpires do it every single week.

As a former catcher, this is an excellent breakdown. If I got ran during this play or called for obstruction then I’d be butthurt af because this is 100% legal. This same rule exists in most leagues for younger players and I would’ve handled this the exact same way as Sanchez at every point during my playing time.
Stop blocking the plate. Simple.
A 1b does not block the bag. 2b and 3b do not block the bag on steals.
I would coach my runners, if he appears to being prepared to block, clock him.
Elbows up, head high. Catchers have LEARN. Do not block the plate.
The only reason they do is because they have armor on their lower body. I guarantee you they wouldn’t do it they didn’t have it.
@@fw8465 This isn't about who's got more guts. The point being made is that the catcher's positioning should have been regarded as legal. I don't think he should either risk injury from a player someone like you is coaching, or else move to the side just so your runner can have an open lane to the plate.
Furthermore, coaching your players (if you're in the majors) to "clock" the catcher may lead to a determination that 7.13 (Buster Posey rule) was violated. Plus it's just effing dangerous. You're just going to invite retaliation (either by the catcher on the next runner who tries it, or by the pitcher). That sort of BS is why hockey changed the icing call. Even with people trying to play clean without coaches try to instigate mayhem, injuries happen.

2. The catcher caught that fair and square and did a damn good job.
The throw wasn’t on point. That’s why the controversial play happened. Catcher did everything right, and was forced to move his leg to field the off target throw.
@@djdoc06can't throw it directly to the plate or else it will cause the catcher to block it. It's left of the home plate, which helps him tag the incoming runner, so ipso facto it's on point. Throw it to the right and he has to swoop wide left losing time and missing a tag.

They should really have whoever it was that made the overturn explain their rationale just so the players have an idea of what they're supposed to be able to do and what they have to avoid doing in order not to have the calls overturned. Maybe they thought the catcher could have stepped up the line to make the catch instead of going straight over and into the basepath, but that's just a guess.

Don't learn too much, Jomboy is objectively wrong here. At 3:05 he says the words "there's no blocking" over a screengrab of the catcher blocking the lane. Jomboy seems to think it doesn't count as blocking as long as nobody is touching? But that's not the rule, and that's why actual MLB professionals review calls, and not TH-camrs.
Better make sure that Jomboy actually knows what he's talking about rule wise before you learn to much from him. Close call sports does a better job of actually knowing the rules and explaining them.
@@moeburn No he’s right here. Gary is attempting to catch the ball, and wherever it is thrown he is trying to catch it. That is the rule. He is not considered blocking the plate when attempting to receive the ball, in which is shown even here.

Except the overhead another 1/2 a second back(inconvenient for the sake of making his point) shows a poor decision by Sanchez as he takes a step to the left to block any lane to the plate. Then he steps right to catch the ball. That was MLB's ruling. If Sanchez didn't make that wide legged step to block the lane prior to actually getting the ball(just as Merrifield was beginning his slide), it would have been great. Everything from the catch to tag was perfect. It's a stupid rule either way.

I remember when Rocco was a young exciting prospect with the Rays, and 20 years later he's in angry dad mode cussing out the replay booth. Man how time flies.
Awesome breakdown. Has camera angles of this play I haven't seen before. IMHO, Sanchez left Merrifield a lane on the outside. But as Merrifield said, "Put my head down first couple steps then looked up and tried to figure out how to get into home plate and saw Gary straddling home plate so tried to just slide into him, straight into him best I could. I know what the rule is, it was just a matter of if they were going to call it.” Fact 1: The ball beat Merrifield to the plate. Why is this ignored by the replay crew? Fact 2: Sanchez set up inside the plate. Fact 3: There still was a way Merrifield could have tried to slide around Sanchez on the outside. It seems the runners are gaming the rule by intentionally trying to slide into the catcher, just the opposite of what the rule intended.
Fact 1: By the rule that doesn't matter if he blocked the plate prior to getting the ball altering the runner's slide.
Fact 2: He wasn't inside when Merrifield initiated the slide.
Fact 3: Yes, he could have attempted to go around. This is a bad rule but ALL sports have players taking advantage of bad rules intentionally. This is the Brady tuck rule. Awful stupid rule but the the right call based on this stupid rule.
And this is why I have never been a fan of this rule.
My question for Merrifield: why slide feet first? You hardly ever go feet first on a close play as your arms have better dexterity than your legs. Goofy choice.

You can't move anywhere into the lane where the chalk is basically. The runner isn't expected to do some crazy swing slide to somehow score. The rules are particular and I know, I was a catcher for a looooong time. Not pro or anything obviously, but long enough where I played through all the changes, in respect to blocking the plate.
This was really close but honestly Sanchez didn't need to move from the top of the plate to catch that ball, he moved to catch it squarely, which then moved him into the chalk line, thus "blocking the plate."
Tough way to lose.
I would love for the guys in NY to explain what he did wrong and what he was supposed to do differently. This feels like it's in the same territory of balk rules.

@@sid6041 the only thing I could think of is technically he could've caught the ball without needing to be directly behind it with his full body so that his left leg wasn't in the way (I have not been a baseball fan for very long just haven't seen anyone mention that) so my thoughts is he didn't need to shift as much as he did to catch the ball

2:50 Throw happens, catcher isn't blocking the lane.
2:56 One step to his left because the ball is coming that way, The runner still has an outside lane.
3:00 He takes a second step to his left, and is allowed to block the lane without the ball, because the batter isn't in the circle yet.
3:02 Runner enters the circle and starts to slide, catcher doesn't have the ball, but the ball is close enough, think the rule says 90 feet or so, that he is officially in the act of "fielding the throw".
3:08 Catcher has the ball, is allowed to block the lane, and is ready to tag the runner.
If this is against the rule then they need to start putting physical marks down for where a catcher can or can't stand and make sure that they always have enough camera angles for the guys in New York to triangulate how far the ball is from the plate and when.

If they really are going to create this flip floppy rule for what is and isn't "blocking the plate" then yes I agree there should be some markings or lines that show where the catcher can't be before the throw gets in range and caught. Tough to see that overturned, it looked text book to me, on the basis of what the rule currently is for catchers
Agree 100%. It is the same conflict you have in football with targeting and this is coming from a former catcher. Been run over a couple of time before. You either need to tell the catcher that at no point can he EVER cross the foul line on the 3rd base side of the plate under any circumstances ever until he has the ball and tell the runner that he can never cross the foul line in fair ground or make contact with the catcher until the catcher has the ball; OR you need to allow collisions. This is a dumb subjective coin flip rule. Similar to targeting in football. It is fucking arbitrary and a no win situation for the defense. Same with the catcher here. There is no win for him. Either let the ball hit the backstop or catch it and get called for blocking the plate. At least with that first option everyone would know how critical an accurate throw is and there would be no decision to be made. And that is what you have to do with referees and umpires now days. Don't give them a decision because they will fuck it up if there is any wiggle room. Even with replay they have made these rules so fucking arbitrary and complicated that they can't even make the right call after 5 minutes of reviewing it in slow motion.

@@blakethornsbrough1528 You're focusing on the wrong rule lol. Look up obstruction. Its more simple of a call than people are making it. The fielder without the ball cannot impede the runners action to get to the base. Sanchez without question stands in front of the base without the ball, then catches the ball, and correctly blocks the plate. The obstruction occurs before he has the ball in his glove (which makes the rule Jim put on screen irrelevant to this conversation)

Sanchez could've taken a step to the right and still easily fielded that ball. It's on him to avoid blocking the plate until he has the ball. If he stood where he was until he caught the throw, then moved left, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Unless of course Sanchez is unable to catch a ball on his glove side.

Jomboy spent so many years making breakdowns with the intention of convincing us Gary Sanchez was a good catcher, that he’s still doing it even when he’s not a Yankee.
He’s made multiple videos talking about how bad Gary is like the “worst tag attempt you’ll ever see” and another where he talks about all the passed balls Gary gave up.
He’s the worst defensive catcher in baseball, and it’s not close. Shitty framer, awful blocker, all around bad catcher.
However, that was textbook and should have stayed as an OUT call. And that’s coming from a Jays fan. I mean, I’ll take it, I like that the Jays won, but the ball was in the catchers possession long before runner got to the plate. He made a good tag. He’s out. Bottom line.
He hasn’t been that bad of a catcher this year, I’ve seen him block a good amount of pitch’s this year as a twins fan

@@jacobbrake5283 Yep, I admittedly didn’t watch his as much when he was on the Yankees and really only saw him on Jomboy, but as a twins fan his defense has been pretty solid this season. Little wanting on offense but we were spoiled by Mauer for so long.
This happened the same evening that the Orioles' catcher was deemed to have blocked the plate and Hyde was thrown out of the game for questioning the challenged play...it would have been the third out and ended the inning...the inning continued and the Pirates brought in a couple more runs...weird
Hyde was actually ejected for coming out of the dugout, even though he wanted to clarify if the runner could be considered out because he never touched home on the play

There might be a good breakdown in Sunday's Yankees @ Cardinals game. The home plate umpire had a pretty strange strike zone, and I think the Yankees manager got ejected for arguing about it. It was quite a exciting game between two very good teams!

Never blocked, was squared up to the catch stepped back in front of plate and lifted his leg to put it down before player got there, once more theres not irrefutable evidence to overturn

@@MarcosElMalo2 Nah. I was at the cottage and listened to that game. Of course, I did not see the play so had to rely on the Jays announcers describing the action. I think they were surprised at the overturn. Seeing the play here, Rocco had good reason to be upset. The Blue Jays go away with one.

This is just evidence of baseball's coastal bias. Once upon a time, I feel like Jomboy would have called this obvious bullshit, but costal bias is real.
The same play happened in Baltimore the same day and the play was overturned to be safe as well
Not particularly close to the same play because the catcher set up outside the RHB batter's box and then moved back towards the plate to field the throw. Gary moved one foot into foul territory to field the throw, which is allowed in the rule book.
@@Benisuber1 Yeah it was the dropping the knee that got him safe. Gary dropped the knee before he had the ball. Really surprised Jomboy didn't notice that.
@@moeburn because he didn't drop the knee until he had the ball. Or at *least* it was too close to overturn. There are multiple angles that show him with possession of the ball and the knee above the plate. In fact he talks about that... he even calls it "textbook"

@@SeraphsWitness He must have gotten tossed. You can't argue a replay review. It's basically an immediate ejection if you come out arguing a replay review (basically because the umps on the field have no say in it anymore)

You’re right. He is supposed to catch that over his throwing side shoulder. Then to make it worse he double clutched it before getting rid of it. Throw was on target but honestly he didn’t make a good play on it.

I was taught to catch the ball on my throwing side with the throwing hand up near the glove to get rid of ASAP, but I never see MLB outfielders do this.
Would’ve been cool to see a breakdown of the other catcher interference play that happened that same night as well, to see if there was any difference in the fielding. Great vid as always!
There was. He positioned himself square across the baseline. That was a clear example of blocking, and not the baserunner going, "Oh shit, I'm out so I'm going to try to truck the catcher to get a ruling against him on replay."
@@katherineberger6329 Was coming in to say this. The other catcher was squared up blocking around the time the throw was being made, not while the ball was in the air.

If this is how they are going to choose to interpret the rule as written going forward, then they're going to need to change the verbiage from
"it shall not be considered a violation of the rule if the catcher makes a legitimate attempt to field the throw"
to
"the catcher is not allowed to step into foul territory until he has possession of the ball"
because how they ruled it doesn't at all align with how the rule is currently written.
I don't think Sanchez dropping his knee in front of Merryweather before even having the ball was done in effort to help him catch the ball.
He wasn't fielding the throw when Merrifield was halfway to home, and yet he was blocking the plate. You just need a better understand of what "attempt to field the throw" means.

@@theogreenaway7401 We can see in the video that Sanchez takes two steps to the left to try to field the ball heading to his left. That's legal. The illegal part is AFTER that, at 3:05, when Sanchez sticks his knee out in front of the runner to try to be like "WHOOP you can't run HERE haha!" - and the rules say you can't do that until AFTER you have caught the ball. Sanchez thought he could sneak a dirty move in, slomo umps caught it. Jomboy is wrong on this one.

This same thing literally just happened in the Orioles and Pirates game. They ruled the runner out as the last out of the inning, then reviewed it and changed the ruling and claimed the catcher blocked the plate so the runner was safe which lead to several more runs. The Orioles manager took a few steps onto the field to go get an explanation and they tossed him immediately. It seems they have no clue what the rule actually says if it’s happening so quickly back to back like this
There are some massive differences with the Os incident. The Os catcher was square to the runner the entire time. He was very clearly giving no lane. Gary is very clearly receiving the ball, isn't squaring until he has the ball (whereas the Os catcher was squared the entire time) and was also very clearly giving an outside lane (that the Os catcher wasn't.) The difference is that there was indisputable evidence on that play. Here... not so much.

we all assume in these plays the umps wont call it avoidable contact but its really up to their mood

Don’t agree. The catcher moved to block the plate well before he had the ball. To catch the ball he easily could have 1.) remained where he originally was, not blocking the path to the plate 2.) moved backwards behind home plate and then to the left of he felt he needed to move to the left, instead of in front of the plate, or 3.) he could have moved up the line towards third but still inside the pathway to the base if he wanted to catch the ball in the air.
But because he moved in front of the base before he had the ball and continued to stay there he violated the rule.
I like when I'm watching baseball and I see a play happen that I know is going to turn into a Jomboy breakdown!
Unfortunately that happens less and less since jomboy seems to forget what made him popular and where most of his views come from

I thought so too, but then he shimmied right again and lifted his leg. There still appeared to be a pathway to the base IMO. And as soon as the ball contacted the glove he dropped that leg down. Totally a textbook play.
I agree. He could have easily caught the ball and applied a tag if he had stayed in his original position. He blocked the plate. Seems so obvious. I’m surprised so many people thought he should have been out. If the catcher is allowed to do that than the runner should be allowed to run him over.

Blocking the plate doesn’t just mean a lane for the runner to slide. He should have a lane to score standing up. Sanchez clearly was blocking and preventing him from scoring standing up prior to the ball being caught. If you think this should have been allowed than the runner should have the right to run him over.
