1/ Failing to indicate when turning right onto the Calder Hwy.
2/ Driving down the medium strip.

I have ridden both ways up the Main Street of Wycheproof in a blue DERM railcar in the early 1970s. Going to Sea Lake was at nighttime. My accommodation for the night was an old lantern shed on the platform at Sea Lake. The train arrived late at night and left early the next morning so I had the opportunity to experience the morning run up the main highway through Wychie.
If you there by car then make sure you detour to go up to the lookout.
Mt. Wycheproof is claimed to be the smallest official mountain in Australia. Going north west in Victoria you are normally following a rail line and looking at the next silo in the far distance.

my dad, a steam loco fireman then a driver, told me about the line down the main street of wichie (and koondrook). he knew every line in the state. it was his job. the hot working environment, especially in summer, generates a big thirst. here in wichie there are pubs on both sides very near the line. imagine a goods train going slowly through this town on a stinking hot day. would it be a normal occurrence for one of the crew to rush over and grab some thirst quenchers, lets say 2 bottles, which would get them to another town along the way to where there is bound to be a "station hotel" or a "railway hotel" and get a couple more and do this all the way to mildura. dad never mentioned doing this but my own experience is that the beer never had any inebriating effect on me when i was doing bloody hard work. he must have done it. and every crew on slow steam loco hauled goods trains probably did it.

Awesome video! It was a pleasure to watch.
There's so many ugly railways, I have always wondered why either the railways themselves, local councils, state or federal government's, have never thought to beautify railway corridors. It seems that hardly a thought goes towards what is visible from the train. Imagine if, wherever you went by rail the views were as good as this or better? There's no reason it couldn't or shouldn't be done, there's employment to be had and eventually Australia would have travellers who come here just to travel by rail. I've thought about this every time I look out of the train's windows. People would put up with the noise and smells (that I actually like. Call me weird) much more if the views were guaranteed to be picturesque.
I've never bothered to research if parliament have dedicated fund's to do this. Knowing our government, the money would have been mishandled and wasted with a hint of corruption if it ever was.
    Thoughts?

I don't think it gets cooler than this.driving that through a beautiful town down the street.and most of all doing it peacefully without
hanging on the horn button like the americans do waking everybody up for miles around!. top video mate,

    • @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
      @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah no need to hang off the horn if everyone obeys the rules, if you can't see a train driving up the street one may need their eyes checked. We just use the horn as necessary generally or in locations where visibility is limited.

A lot more civilised than the drivers on the line that goes through Ballarat, Maryborough, St Arnaud, Donald… They don’t give a polite toot at crossings, but often lean on the horn for ages.

    That was so super cool.
Were you traveling south or north bound.
2 years ago I did a stint of Mildura running for a mate, never caught a combo through the town.
It would be a real shame when it goes from BG to SG & running NR class.
Something special running old Bulldogs through these old country towns.
    Cheers
