I had a teacher who gave us a test and there was the usual sentence below “Name __” with the typical test instructions (ex: fill in the circle for your answers, etc). Well it also said don’t take this test. Most students didn’t read the instructions, so they were filling out the test/ rushing because it was timed. A select few just put their pens down and relaxed. The test was trying to get us to read directions carefully

At the TOP of the paper it said "Please read ALL the questions first before starting." I thought it was unusual but what the heck. The VERY LAST "question" said "Write your name and the date at the top of the paper, then raise your hand" Only 4 minutes into the time alloted I raised my hand and received ALL the extra points. As the rest of the class finished their exam you could hear the moans and laughter. Great teacher!! This reminds me of the final we had for one class. The teacher always lectured us to read through the entirety of a test to identify question types etc. Most of us never listened, but he was rambling so i happened to flip to that last page out of boredom. The last question said: "You do not have to take this test". I was mad confused, thinking it was a practice copy only to be looked at. I glanced at the teacher, and caught his eye. He saw where i was flipped to, and gave me a wink. 5 minutes into the 70 question exam i stood up and declared i was done. Everyone looked at me like a dummy. The next person to hit that point was a buddy of mine 20 minutes later, who wondered how hard the last portion had to be for me to have finished so fast. He came out with the dumbest look and asked me when i figured it out. Told him before it even started. The rest of the students slowly trickled out about 30 minutes later furious, after someone actually stood up and angrily asked the teacher what that meaning of the last queston was, prompting the whole class to look. I honestly don't blame the teacher. That was a practice he had been preaching since the start of the semester. 😂

Had this happen with a science teacher in junior high, who was probably one of the weirdest teachers I ever had. When we dissected frogs, he would take the bladder of one of them and blow it up as big as the bladder could go, and hand it over to someone random. When he didn't have a class, or when his class was busy with exams, he would ride on a scooter into other classrooms and scare the crap out of everyone by yelling, "it's Friday!", or whatever day of the week it happened to be. He delighted in weird questions on our exams. He also had a pilot's license, and every time I took the bus to school, my route passed by his house, which had an actual hangar with a plane in it. He was old when I had him as a teacher, but I fully believe that if anyone could live to be over 100 and still living the dream, it would be that guy.

I think that's actually a really good lesson if the teacher secretly didn't actually do that when it came to tabulating the final marks for the class.
Learning to read the entire test first is pretty important in some courses where tests are written with the intent of creating a strong bell curve. Some tests are written with the intent no one will finish them. On these kinds of tests some questions aren't worth trying to answer for the marks they are worth, and honestly this is the case even if the test is intended to be finished but you are unsure if you can work fast enough.
You want to start with the questions that give you the most marks for the least effort and work your way down.

That test was our final in an engineering focused class I had in Highschool and the majority of the class had a hard time keeping up with the work and a lot of people in it would fail it if they failed this final and pass if they passed it so it was a very nice way of saying he cared about us getting through highschool. Very true. As me being the 4.0 honor roll student, I was exactly like that. I'd be done and waiting wayyyyy before everyone else. Or I'd 99% know the right answer, but would never say or do anything due to that 1% chance I could be wrong. Realistically it all stems down to me being bullied in 1st grade. I don't like being the laughing stock.

On the last day of term, my biology teacher made us sit a test, which had a long list of instructions on the first page, and he told us to read all the instructions before starting. The first 2 questions were your name and class. The rest of the test was loads of random stuff like standing up, shouting things etc. The class quickly devolved into chaos, except for one kid who sat smugly at the front of the class. Turns out the final instruction was 'only answer questions 1 and 2'. He was the only one to pass the test as he was the only one who read all the instructions. The teacher rewarded him with some candy and used it to teach us the importance of reading the questions carefully in exams. I have to say it was very memorable

My students used to look for these fun items and actually looked forward to taking tests. Where I went to school, well at least most of the many places, we often had items to test if you're doing it properly.
Like having a high number of equations and text problems that just weren't realistically solvable in time and didn't give any meaningful amount of points but at the end a convoluted text problem including many of the answers, some in a more and some in a less obvious fashion.
Taught some people that they're not as bright as they thought, if so that they'll need apply themselves a lot and need loads of routine etc. Pp. to get through and last but not least that you don't start work without having any clue and overview what's to be done.

This reminded me of one of my college Law classes. It was Contracts Law. The Professor walked in and instantly started lecturing. None of the 150 students were ready for that so we all scrambled for paper and pens. 10 minutes into the lecture he stops and says “ohh, I forgot a small admin issue.” He went on, “if you want your grades posted sign this” and he passed a clipboard around with signature lines”. I was on the 4th row and the clipboard made it to the guy in front of me. His hand went up. Dr Jentz says,”yes sir” pointing to the student. The student says, “Dr Jentz, this says we’re going to pay you $100 at the end of the semester.” You’ve never seen 3 rows of students all turn in unison. I have. Dr Jentz laughed and says, “1st thing you learn in Contracts Law is read it before you sign it”. I’ve never forgotten that lesson.

in my first university year, a teacher said that whomever got to the classroom dressed in thanksgiving costume would get 2 aditional points at the end of the semester.
I was going way too well in that class so I and a couple of other friends watched the rest of the class cross the campus as turkeys, elves, and leprechauns.

Actually you're right. When I took Biology class, our teacher said we could do something for extra credit for 5 points. He said, for example, rap a song you create about Biology. I told him, the next day, "I wrote a POEM for extra credit". And I *read* it to the class. Imagine rapping. How embarrassing!

I love it when a teacher has a sense of humor with their students. It seems to help create a closer & more trusting relationship with their students. There are still boundaries, of course, rules, & repercussions/discipline as well. But it can make learning so much more effective causing kids to focus more on what the teachers are saying.

Yep! My college professor pulled a trick on us like this for a quiz. The quiz had about 50 questions and he told us to answer as many as we could in under a minute, but he told us to “read through it carefully”. I skimmed through the quiz because the questions were absurd, and so the last question told us to just write our names on the quiz and that’s it. I was the only one to listen, read carefully, and passed. 😊

Had a similar test, except it had people shouting out their favourite colour, food. Counting how long it takes a page to fall to the ground from your head height.
Only instruction on the page was to only write your name on the page

As someone who would have hesitated too, you're plain wrong.
Doing something and abstaining from something are completely different. In this case, it required courage. "Peer pressure", and not succumbing to it would require discipline. It's not the same.

@@senqui Well it's ridiculous to be so insecure. Life is short & it only makes life more uncomfortable to not just be yourself & years later you'll realize how silly being so worried about how others look at u / or worrying how you'll look in front of people is so silly. Obviously as long as you're conducting yourself respectably & morally then it makes no sense to care how u look to others.
