The most fun with thermals I've had has actually been at airsoft events. Even then the handheld would have worked best. Tried an event with weapon mounted and it was good for scanning and seeing heat signatures of people in the distance that wouldn't have been possible with my Nods. At another event we set up an ambush line at night but got compromised by a scout with thermals.

Clip on for tacticl stuff. Keep your superior LPVO eye relief. Quickly add thermal capability to your go to rifle. Use as a handheld if you don't want to be holding your gun all night.
Dedicated thermal for hunting. Bigger sensors give you farther range. You can get the same performance of a clip on for less.
Though a hand held is still really really nice, so I'd still probably keep my RH25 for every instance, as it still reaches out far enough for most hunting ranges.

After a few months of RH25 ownership, gonna have to respectfully disagree with two clip-on points:
    - Viewing experience. Never used a StingIR but with the RH25, standalone use feels like looking at a small screen. Mounting it in front of a good LPVO at 1.5-2x gets you almost the same field of view but with a bigger/nicer eyebox. Mounting it in front of a 4x ACOG (how I'm running mine) gives you the ACOG's famously huge field of view and looks sharper to me than the thermal alone with 4x digital zoom.
    - Return to zero. Again speaking just for the RH25 here but it returns to zero quite well when using the iRay pictail shoe (works for both weapon and helmet mounting) with ADM weapon mount. ADM just released a flip-to-side mount for the StingIR if I'm not mistaken.
Gonna try to display all this in clip-on RH25 video in the works. Hope you're well!

    • @Hoplopfheil
      @Hoplopfheil  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

I'm pretty sure the RH25 and StingIR are basically the same device, and neither is really a true clip-on. A purpose built clip-on like the Rattler TCs, or the Pulsar in this video have very different screens that are quite difficult to look at with your naked eye or a camera. AGM sells a replacement rear eyepiece for the TC Rattlers that works exactly like the one on the TS, basically turning it into a monocular.

To buy or not to buy - an online buddy recently asked me my thoughts on thermals, having used the tech in several different configurations in several different situations down range. I think it’s interesting so my (not-definitive) two cents were
The fun & cool factor, if budget allows, are enough of a reason. Cuz thermals are fun & cool imo (pun not really intended, but whatever).
For practical applications, I think its most easily broken down by this:
    NVGs help general situational awareness
    Thermals help specific target acquisition
    Or,
NVGs can be great for night hiking
Thermals can be great for night hunting.

I went with the AGM Rattler TC35-384 clip-on and am very happy with my choice. I also got the add-on eye-piece ($200) which also makes the clip-on into a stand-alone thermal scope and a thermal monocular all in one unit. I'm running it with a Sig Sauer Tango 6 3-18X44 scope; it works well up to about 6X. Using the AGM low mount made by American Defence ($150) I have removed and replaced the unit after zeroing it several times and it has remained dead on. I much prefer the clip-on because I still have the very high-quality image of my riflescope during the day and when it gets dark it only takes about 5 seconds to add the clip-on and I'm ready for the night piggies.

If you’re going to get a clip-on thermal, pair it with a prismatic or variable zoom optic. By putting the objective lens right behind the unit you will be able to get the best view of the screen, especially if it has 1x capability. This is a bit of a hot take for hop, but the Elcan has a clear advantage over the acog in this niche application.

Just carry a thermal sight and a day optic. There is virtually no zero shift when swapping optics especially if you are using a QD. On mounts with screws you just have to paint a line and then count how many turns it takes to torque it to a repeatable amount. Also make sure you push forward on the rail before you tighten. This is really where your repeatability comes from.

  • @Minuteman_Medic

I think a thermal weapon sight would pair well with a civilian IAR. Kinda like how M240 gunners use a PAS-13 when necessary, same could be done for the guy with the civvie SAW. Whenever it's necessary to use it, he can clip on the sight and go to work. The SAW is an area weapon anyways, so a rough return to zero is perfectly acceptable.

    • @gus808

@gus808 M249s still get zeroed. It's just a lower standard than a zero you'd want on an M4/AR-15. That's why it wouldn't matter much for a civilian IAR where the optic is coming off frequently.

    • @Minuteman_Medic
      @Minuteman_Medic หลายเดือนก่อน

@marcusborderlands6177 That's essentially what I'm thinking. From what I've heard the Quattro actually works well, I'm just not 100% sold on having a proprietary mags/lower. With 2-3 Magpul D-60s and the rest being 30-40rd mags, you'd still be able to put up significant volumes of fire.

I used 3 different thermals in a civilian security job for several years. We used 2 different standalone rifle sights then ended up with PAS-13's. Both standalone sights were terrible. These were older sights, I have no experience with the newer options. Our PAS-13's were on dedicated Aimpoint equipped AR's. They were excellent with only 2 downsides from the user perspective; battery life was dismal and the weight being mounted out on the handguard was exaggerated. The nice part about the clip on was, you could remove it and still have a functional rifle if the thermal quit. Also, in the unlikely event the rifle became non-functional, you could swap the thermal to another rifle easily.

Solid overview. My 1c, after playing with a few lower end thermal units, the sensor resolution was far and away the biggest factor. Each step up (maybe obviously) was a BIG improvement on clarity, and price. I ended up with a Sightmark Wraith Mini for ~$1600 for a semi-dedicated varmint/pig gun. Its 384x288 sensor is good for pig size targets to 150ish yards, though anything past 4x digital is almost useless. I tried out a couple 160x120 sensors units, imo, they were way too grainy to be of much use, even up close.

I hunt coyotes in the Midwest and spend hundreds of hours a year in the field with thermal and nv. For what I use thermal for I want 4x base mag on an optic. I’ve tried a rh25 for closer, faster shooting and it’s not really plausible. I’d rather passive/active aim with nv. At night shots at 400-600 aren’t uncommon on coyotes that hang up. However getting a good wind call is the toughest part next to staying steady on a tripod. A decent optic with a quality qd mount seems like the best first step into thermal since you can use it handheld or mounted. A budget handheld scanner is cheaper but it will always be a one trick pony.

As someone who hunts very challenging targets at longer ranges at night, I have developed a somewhat unusual perspective and system for utilizing thermal. As you noted, thermal is great at target detection but is relatively short range in its ability to do target identification. Conversely a night vision optic offers much much higher resolution, but being monochromatic makes it difficult to detect targets. So I use a special mount to attach a relatively inexpensive thermal monocular above the scope so the two oculars are one above the other. This lets you use the thermal to find the general area of your target, and then you can switch to the scope below for your precision aiming and target identification. This beats holding the thermal as a monocular in your off hand because it means your rifle starts pointed in the right direction, and on fleeting targets it can be very difficult to bring your rifle to bear and find what you spotted through a handheld monocular quickly enough.
    Just my 2c.

The answer, eventually, will be an integrated optic- whether it's modular like the optic of the XM7/250, or turnkey like the steinerCQT and holosun. For right now the battery life means clip-on, lot of batteries to run a dedicated thermal all the time.

0:55 Saying you can shoot with a PVS-14 is like saying you can run with clown shoes on. Technically true, but you're probably going to lose to anyone with the proper tools. In this case, a dedicated NVD scope or clip-on.
For those who don't know, good NVD clip-ons are collimated. Basically, there's a prism in the eyepiece that effectively lines up the image and compensates for minor misalignment with the scope. So you don't need to do that zeroing he described in the video with the thermal. Even with my ghetto "Mount a picatinny rail to my scope with extra scope rings" I had effectively no meaningful zero shift my first time out. (Yes I have a better setup now.) Yea if you're running around at night wondering what you just tripped over, the PVS-14 is nice. Actually shooting, collimated clip-on all the way. (Though as we've seen in Ukraine, operating at night with NVDs is actually kinda pointless when the other side has them and thermals too.) Shooting using a laser or looking through a red-dot with a PVS, yea no thanks to that clown show. A clip-on lets you shoot like normal through a scope. 6x on the day optic is usable for me, but putting it at 4x makes the image noise less distracting. Your mileage may vary, depending on your NVD of course.
You bring up a fantastic point about the issue of collimated thermals. My clip-on NVD might be a brick, but it works just fine as a monocular. The tech of collimating NVD clip-ons is pretty well established, so I can't understand why that's not the default for clip-on thermals? Is it perhaps the weight and length required for the collimating optics that they don't do it?
I had to think about the same issues you described in the video and at the present time, I think the dedicated thermal scope is the way to go unless you can get an optically collimated clip-on. The current setup I'm working on involves a Super Yoter and a daytime scope, both on quick detach mounts. The added bonus is that I can use the thermal as a standalone monocular. We'll see if it actually works. If not, I may have to put the scope on a dedicated gun. I like learning on my own, so failure is always an option. :P
Anyway, didn't mean for this to turn into a book. I rambled on quite a bit. Anyway, great video. Thanks for putting it together. :D

I bought an AGM 384 monocular like an hour ago. I've heard enough mixed opinions on headmounted thermal that I wasn't willing to gamble $2500 on whether or not it worked for me and I felt like having the thermal married to a gun would restrict the type of things I can do with it. I'm hoping that a handheld device to supplement analog NV on my head turns out to be a good system for me. Also it was only like $950. That helped me make my decision too

    • @chrismawson4430

A huge selling feature of the Rattler is they're designed to pull double duty as a monocular and scope. My TS25-640 comes on and off my gun dozens of times in one hunt, and it has made long shots every time I've needed it to. Thermal scopes with good QD mounts are the way to go, unless size and weight is a significant constraint, or you're specifically looking for a secondary detection option, monoculars are sort of wasted money

The clip-on rattlers allow you to turn on/off the reticle and switch from clip-on mode to scope mode. So all you need to do is buy the (overpriced) eyepiece from AGM, and you have the best of both worlds, a single device that can be used as a clip on, scope, or monocular depending on your needs.

I'm testing out a StingIR in front of a 1-6x with pretty good glass (Delta Stryker) and was actually shocked at the image quality myself (in a good way). Only issue is my DBAL blocked 30% of the thermal sensor so I'm having to drop 2k on the DesignateIR.
All that say, I'd feel comfortable taking it out to 300 (possibly 400?) as long as it was collimated (or whatever) correctly. My only concern at this point is return to zero, as I'll be using it as a monocular 90% of the time.
The real wild card for me right now is the new Holosun unit. I realize the sensor leaves alot to be desired but I've seen footage of it out to 300 and it looked...pretty decent? I'd love to see you review that unit when it actually starts shipping.
