Thank you for making this very helpful video that answered all the questions I had. 👏 Since I don't need a very high quality webcam for the videos I make, I decided to sell my Sony A6000 and get a GoPro 10 (+Media mod) to use both as a webcam and as a travel camera.
On an iPad you can pause the screen and then hit the home button along with the power on button on the side at the same time to take a screen snapshot to your photo album.
Currently using my Hero 7 Black (might upgrade to the hero 10 black but unsure)paired with the Elgato Cam link 4K for Streaming / Discord / Zoom calls etc.
I liked the HDMI out and ability to adjust those settings that HDMI added. I'd use it for shots of gear and keys rather than shots of talent so prob would work.

The Hero 10’s webcam lens can be changed but it requires the latest webcam software. You’re showing version 1.0 of the software in your video (the latest is 1.3).
Hey Danny, I just got the new hero 11 and found that there are no settings for wire connection on the gopro, the box says its webcam ready but when I connect it to the MacBook the gopro webcam utility doesn't detect the gopro 11, how to work on the webcam mode

My gopro 10 is only working in mtp mode on pc. In camera menu is no option for changing the mtp mode to gopro connect to use as Webcam.... What can you do
no hero 9 hdmi out in comparison? ... by usb-webcam-mode the 9 looks much better to in details and colors. I use the media-mod hdmi-out and its really really good. love the hero 9 and see no need to upgrade at all.

If you use the HDMI option and you are on a PC you can actually control the camera settings through OBS. It can really look good if you do that. You can’t do it on a Mac but you can help it with the filters in OBS.
Up through the Hero 7 there is a micro HDMI out and on the 8, 9 or 10 you need the media mod to use HDMI. The HDMI on you laptop is for output to a monitor. You will need an HDMI capture card to USB to get the video into your laptop.
If you by chance still need an answer, you will still need a capture card. There are number of capture cards in the $20-$30 bracket that do a good job.

I'd noticed that too. The 10 isn't much better, it is sharp in other way, kinda strange. Hope this is just a temporary thing that will be fixed soon, like the FOV thing.
yea i feel like this will be the next ... white and gold dress... everyone sees something different. I felt like on my big montior the 9 had better color but also resulted in more noise. haha so funny
The sharpness settings in the camera don’t function through the webcam app. All you control are 1080p or 720p and the lens angle which does function in the latest update of the app.
ya its weird. from what i saw on my screen is, it looked like the 9 had more color to it which also added a little more noise, so i wonder if they just made the color on the 10 flat?
from my test... overheating occured when shooting at the highest resolution and frame rate with the gopro sitting on a desk with no way to dissipate the heat through the bottom... but it over heated at 18 minutes. I will do more testing and comparisons
Excellent Review, Danny! Coming from the Hero 4, this is a vast change for me (in a good way). I'm loving the image quality of the 10, but like you, it overheats for me as well. The 4's I can run for hours, but obviously that's old tech. When I use it as a webcam, the video delay in USB mode is too much for me. Are you experiencing the same thing? And subscribed, thanks!
Hi Tynuson. Thanks for the question. Yes I do notice a slight audio delay when using it with usb… I didn’t see much of it using my on board computer mic but when I had my external mic it was a little bit off. The over heating thing is mainly on the high levels of recording. So if you want to record 4K 60fps it does a great job and lasts a lot longer without over heating.

I love that you can use it like this. But honestly my logitech webcam isnt too far off from it quality wise. But I mean, the fact that you CAN do it if you want is really cool for sure. Same goes for the live stream function.. dunno if I'd use it.. but the fact it is there is nice!
What’s the frame rate when used as a webcam in 1080p? The specs say it records at 240 fps in 1080p. Wondering if it’s the same when used as a webcam. Asking because I may use this to record/replay golf swings in my simulator. 240 fps would be ideal.
Thanks for this video Danny. Can you feed your audio into the GoPro for this video or sync separately in Post? I only ask because the lip sync seems a little laggy.
@@daviddively7022 if you use the mic in the GoPro through the HDMI the sync should be ok. My GoPro 5 is in a case so the audio isn’t great but it make the sync on my other mic very easy. I’m not sure what the audio quality of the internal mic is since I haven’t tried it without the case.
I haven’t tried the Elgato but it works well with several $20-ish HDMI capture cards I’ve tried. On the Hero 5 black it does pass the audio through the HDMI cable if that matters.
There is no option for that. The app controls all the camera settings. Your choices are 1080p 30fps or 720p 30fps and lens angle. If you want camera control you will need to use HDMI out. You will get a much better picture with the HDMI option.

Is it just the material from which they're constructed? Like plastic vs metal. ps your sub count does _NOT_ accurately reflect your production value.

Anybody can help me? When I am in webcam mode on my hero9, it doesn’t connect with the quick app to change the settings while it’s connected. Wi-fi is ON. If I disconnect the webcam mode it connects with the quick app. I’m in the usb-c mode.
When you connect to the computer and turn it on, you can’t connect to quick app, and you can’t change any settings on the 9 in webcam mode unfortunately. I hope that clears it up for you
Not significant. Maybe if anything half a second ? If you are experiencing it .. it might just not be in a fast enough port ? Or it might be the cable (I’ve heard that’s how others solved that problem)
How the fck do I get into webcam mode? I just downloaded the application, after that plugged in my camera, but there is no blue light at all. I can't set anything up here. wow the 10 in webcam mode is trash, super soft and lacking pop. Its almost like gopro decided to output a flat unprocessed signal from the webcam mode. I think the HDMI out looked best among the three

100% ... its just kind of as you would have expected it. gopro usually do something worth upgrading every 2 models. but i still have a lot more testing to do... however, the 9 is still a great camera

Load the app on your PC, connect the usb cable and it should detect the app and go into webcam mode.
Make sure in setting your gopro is on gopro connect one, not on mtp

In my opinion the 9 does have more picture noise but the skin tones are better than on the 10. I think the 10 looked best in low light tbh.

You have to record the audio separately and sync in post.

how did you get gorpo 10 work as a webcam when its not supported on gopro website ?
Check the download link in the description it should get you where your need to get the app , gopros website can sometimes be tricky to navigate

It’s powered through the USB port so it will run as long as you want.
Anybody can help me? When I am in webcam mode on my hero9, it doesn’t connect with the quick app to change the settings while it’s connected. Wi-fi is ON. If I disconnect the webcam mode it connects with the quick app. I’m in the usb-c mode.

It works on windows 10 and I haven’t heard of any problems on 11.
I prefer the aver 340 webcam much more professional without distortion
