Charlamagne is a shock jock, he’s famously made guest cry or get angry and storm out, he looks for viral moments and knew asking Tyla about her identity would be content. That’s why he did it, it’s just business. You should always be prepared for Tom foolery when you agree to go on the breakfast club. Especially after Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ it is not th best timing for Tyla to have this scandal. There seems to be a section of black America who is withdrawing support from Tyla, like they tried to withdraw support from Doja cat. Problem is Doja quickly gained popularity in white America too so the cancellation attempt failed miserably. White audiences frankly don’t care how attached Doja or Tyla are to their blackness as long as they make bops. 🤷🏾♂️

The whole debate about Tyla’s Blackness is wild to me…. SHE IS South AFRICAN. I feel like the Black people who claim that their Blackness is unique because they are Americans is like White people saying they are the best because they are Americans. The issue isn’t the RACIAL classification- it’s a nationalistic one. It’s like when European white people say- they aren’t White like the Americans and vice versa. Race is based on the classification of the nation. Not based on genetics. The second way to define race is by colour- which I think is pretty ironic. Especially since said classification of race is a remnant of colonisation and of the colonisers.

No, Charlemagne is generally despised by the BA community because of how disrespectful he is towards his interview subjects. Part of the reason why that interview got as much traction as it did is because someone in 2024 got BA to agree with him.
He’s known for doing these type of things and it’s kinda known that if you go on his show don’t expect it to be a smooth ride because he’s intentionally antagonistic.
Which is why a lot of us were confused as to why Tyla was on there in the first place. First off the bulk of his audience is black American music fans typically in the realm of hip hop and rnb.
Although Tyla herself says she uses rnb as a support genre for her music, her not identifying as black makes her appearance on that show weird enough because it’s a show that’s heavily targeted towards BA.
Also Char said he was going to ignore the labels request for questions to skip over. Her label should have pulled the interview or given her a little preprepared speech it seems like they sent her there to get disrespected. So heavy side eye to her label
Her marketing team needs to reevaluate their strategy with her because they are heavily pushing her on platforms that target blk ppl (essence,bet, tbc, etc.) but she said she isn’t black (which to be clear she doesn’t have to be) it’s just weird to continually shove her in this space she doesn’t identify with. It makes her come off as someone who is only there for profit. They should have let her identify as mixed and pushed her just as heavily in the spaces targeted towards the other cultures she’s apart of. And it would have ended that whole conversation.
The more comments I read, the more I understand that y'all just dont want Tyla shoved down your throat by her teaam. Blk America wants her to be genuine and build an authentic relationship with y'all. That's fair

Don’t you believe that the black community in the US is too quick to assume those of generationally mixed identities or biracial people identify as black? This isn’t the fault of her marketing team as Mariah Carey and Rita Ora also were racially ambiguous artist who dived into rnb or soul-pop . I believe the core of the issue is black Americans have this pre-fixed notion that someone who had black features must be black or identify as it. Tyla is generationally mixed. And it’s black Americans too ignorant of how complex racial identity could be making this noise.

There are very specific reasons as to why we identify this way and not as mixed race. The ethnicity of African-American itself actually already accounts for this admixture

I also think it’s interesting that you chose to reply to me when I specifically said she’s mixed and identifies as such. Not every BA sees eye to eye on what black looks like. The idea of blackness in New York that gets a lot of Caribbean ppl is a lot different than places like South Carolinas that has a lot more Gullah people or Louisiana that gets more creoles. Some people see her as black because she looks similar to other people here who identify as black. I could easily sneak her into some family portraits and she wouldn’t noticeably stick out. I am from California we get a lot more mixed race people from all backgrounds than mainland Africans. In California she would quickly be clocked as mixed can’t say the same for if she was to go somewhere else.
However the wider issue is that in the u.s the media circuit will take anyone who looks remotely black and pass them off as fully black, we’ve seen this with Zendaya, Amandla Stenberg, Yara shihidi, Tracy Ellis Ross, etc you get the point. So even though she isn’t black the media criticism she will face here will sooner mirror that of a black person than any of her other identities. It doesn’t help that her aesthetic is very close to what is associated with blackness here as well.
And yall can’t even argue that yt ppl don’t see her as black these are the same ppl that try to tell us Halsey is black…
People should stop bashing races from other countries. We all know race is a construct, but we all conform to the use of it . I understand why the term is offensive for other countries, and how people make out as if Coloured people stick to labels which were given by oppressors to maintain a higher status than other minorities. The problem is, both a race and culture started to exist and now suddenly it shouldn’t. Funny enough how every other label was given, but yet it is still used freely. We should stop the hypocrisy. Mixed people are neither White, nor Black, nor any other respective category. Choosing to embrace these, is not something to be feared of. Why would I straighten my nappy, kinky hair and lighten my dark skin. I’m embracing my Blackness, but it doesn’t refer to the category or the culture…At least South African Black culture. People should stop forcing other categories on people.

Good afternoon: Tyla needs to be trained on how to do a interveiw. When I saw that I said "Her team literally made her look horrible "...how you do a interview not knowing how to be in one..?? Tyla was nervous, scared & worried. Like in a panic..!! She was so lost. Who even started Tyla denied her blackness thing. I love Tyla but I think this has to do w/marketing more than anything. And I honestly think this falls on her team. They should have prepared her for this because they are the ones who know the American market. If she is going to be marketed to audiences in the US then racial issues like this is a touchy topic considering the racial background of this country. Also colorism w/the black community is also another issue. So they should be the ones to help her maneuver these issues because 1 wrong move could leave a bad taste in the mouth of black Americans and her career will take a hit like Chloe Bailey’s career did. We can educate all day but her team should have known better than to bring the same terminology from SA to the US because those are 2 different markets. And if she wants to be global her team needs to take notes from artist like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj because they aren’t from the USA but they still manage to have & maintain a great standing w/the American ppl & they have never upset their audience in a racial way that would compromise their positions as global superstars. If she wants to be big in the US a compromise will have to be made there for she should have PR Training because that won’t be the 1st or last time difficult questions will pop up during interviews or any other interaction.
Compromise what? She isn't just being marketed to a US audience. She's being marketed as a COLOURED international artist from South Africa. The world does not revolve around Americans (speaking as an American). So she has to change how she identifies herself everywhere she performs? Makes no sense.
I wont say too much about it here, but like you said, her team is who you should look at when analyzing most things happening around her.
@@rheadreid Nicki is “Dougla” which is a trini term that means some one who is of African and Indian decent. Dougla is derogatory term like mulatto. Nicki doesn’t market her self as dougla even tho she is. Latto changed her name from Mulatto to latto because“mulatto” is a derogatory term and people were not rocking with that so she changed it. Tyla isn’t above any of those ppl especially the queen or rap. No matter if we like it or not “we the people” are the market and this is why global companies like McDonald’s change their marketing based on the graphic & location they are marketing to. They market differently in the USA vs China. Because the same thing that works here doesn’t work there. This is business she can be colored in SA and in her personal life but now that she is a brand she will have to move like one which is why she has a PR team AKA a marketing team. Regular people don’t have marketing teams but business do. And as black history enthusiast,an American who is also a descend of the Xhosa tribe in South Africa I understand both sides but business is business.

I had been following Tyla since before she started releasing music and I was definitely defensive towards the industry plant accusations when she crossed over to the U.S
I agree with your notion that she wasn’t an industry plant in SA and I have no knowledge of that music market but I can say that the u.s market picks and chooses who it wants to be successful
I do think it’s a bit interesting that the only mixed race person in the category won the Grammy over artists that have been making music longer than her. And it definitely fits in with how the u.s pushes mixed ppl as the face of Afro-centric representation. This isn’t a dig at Tyla but more just about how the u.s market hasn’t changed its stripes just rinsed and repeats with new people
Also Grammys have always been bought and paid for and pretty much have become an invalid measuring system to most ppl in the u.s so it’s really interesting to see how SA will use Tyla having one when they talk about other African artists. It’s similar to how kpop stans talk about the Grammys ngl.
As an American it’s really interesting to me how much non-Americans will talk about u.s centrism but then willl use things like the Grammys to validate artists

BA will never have to ride for someone as hard as yall ride for Tyla due the hypervisibility of u.s media. (We can talk about how the u.s media reach is a form of soft power, and doesn’t import on the same level it exports on another day)
It’s much easier to break into international markets if you start off in the u.s market that there are plenty of celebrities who end up jumping ship from Hollywood to other countries because they have a larger more profitable audience outside of the US just due to ppl attaching themselves to our exported media
Even Tyla herself has talked about how she grew up surrounded by u.s media and had to learn to appreciate her own background she also frequently talks about being inspired by Aaliyah, Brandy and there’s videos of her singing Whitney Houston songs.
But back to the point unless it’s a smaller artist black Americans don’t have to defend our artists as hard because other people will. That’s not to say we don’t engage in fan wars because we do but you’d be surprised how many supporters of artists like Beyoncé, Nicki, Taylor swift, Selena Gomez, Rhianna, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande etc. actually aren’t American

I think the industry plant allegations are disingenuous and don't take into consideration the the different elements that are working for Tyla's success.
Amapiano is so big that there a whole piano festival overseas but we don't have one here at home. Tyla is doing pop piano which I think is digestible to wider range of audience, hence her global blow up.
Tiktok has by far, surpassed traditional media as a PR and Marketing tool and that's where she blew up. Black Americans are just mad that Tyla didn't go through the "Negro Couuncil" i.e Jay Z, Diddy to beg for success. Rock Nations has fumbled Nasty C and Elaine's careers so badly.
Saying she's an industry plant because she doesn't have a SAMA is crazy cause success in the age of Tiktok is not linear. There is no starting and end point, I'll say she's worked harder than her team to be where she is. Period!!!

Not everybody likes Charlamange but he known for his direct questions when it comes to interviewing his guests which can off as rude at times. For this specific interview with Tyla, Tyla came off as too good for the interview. Specially when that podcast is very popular. I can see it both ways. Tyla has answered what her background is multiple times and people keep asking her same questions over and over again.

What you said about African Americans wanting Tyla to throw away her African heritage and her reflection of self to fit in with us is WRONG. If I were to go to Johannesburg, I would want a native to teach me the lingo and what I should and not say there. That is called respect for other people's cultures. Here in America, black people do not refer to themselves as colored. There are plenty of diasporas in the U.S. who look just like Tyla. Those people identify themselves as black. If you want to come to somebody's country and want to entertain them or appeal to them, you have to understand their way of thinking. This is even biblical as it also would apply to business. There is no black person here in America who would tell someone to get rid of her culture just to suit us.
Black Americans are the biggest hypocrites on the planet. They get triggered by the word "coloured" yet go around calling each other the n - word. If the word coloured is so offensive, why was no one boycotting the movie "for coloured girls?" Why is no one boycotting the NAACP? Let's be clear about one thing: this is not about the word "coloured." Actually they don't really have a problem with the word "coloured." They hate Tyla not because of the fact that she REFERS TO HERSELF as coloured. They hate her because she is beautiful and talented but mostly because she is showing that it is actually possible to be a world class entertainer and pop star without using anything that is American. She is an African artist doing African music. As much as they like to accuse everyone of cosplaying or copying them, she is showing that it is possible to be African and not have to speak or act or dance like them and still be successful and popular, if not more than them. Coloured does not mean light skinned.There are both light and dark skinned coloured people in South Africa. It's a distinct ethnicity and officially classified as a different race here.

Upon further research we discovered that it’s a term used to create a caste/hierarchy to oppress full Africans. Also it was her fans and South Africans that made Black Americans say she isn’t black. But she is. People mention Doja & Drake. But because they are half white. They have a lot of weird self hate and anti-black things they’ve done in their careers. People were confused cause all the other African artists, light skin mixed or not just say they are Black. You also have to remember Black people in the Americas received 500+ years of this oppression. So yes it is very weird and strange to have a caste system where you are called “colored” but it’s not yall fault. Apartheid ended in the 90’s. But that word and the caste system there is directly influenced by the oppression brought to the Americas. Tyla unfortunately is black lol she’d be black just like Nicki Minaj.
