Does Muzzle Brake Size Matter?

- When choosing a muzzle brake you do not want to get one with a smaller diameter than your bullet. But does a larger diameter brake like one for a .308 affect a bullet like a .223? In this video, we run some tests to find out how different brake sizes affect your recoil, and accuracy.

▬ About MDT ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
MDT was born out of a single purpose: to provide better value and better accuracy for precision rifles. The first MDT chassis was developed from the ground up based on the needs of shooters.
Our engineers verified every function and feature based on the input from competitive shooters. The end result was a game-changing product called the TAC21 that continues to perform at the range, in the field and in competitions around the world.
Today, MDT chassis, magazines and accessories are still developed the same way.
We collaborate, question and verify our concepts with precision shooters from around the globe to ensure that every MDT product is designed with the same single purpose: to provide our customers with the absolute best product possible.
Epic!!! I was worried having a 308 brake on 6.5 would make it perform differently.. That vid put that worry to bed. Love these mdt vids ❤
Perfect! We are glad the video helped and we will keep them coming
I love these videos, you guys are killing all the myths in long range shooting
Thank you, we appreciate the feedback.
Thank you for this. I couldn't find any actual real-world testing on this topic. I needed to know of i could run a 30 cal ASR brake on my 223 rifle, as everything in 223 was sold out.
What I like best about these videos is that you have the most genuine comments from real people, honest feedback and discussion!
1st - thank you for making this a sub 5 min video - this could have EASILY been drawn out to a boring 20 min video - well done to the video editor! 2nd - shooting a 223 with a 308 brake seems to have some advantages....not huge ones but they are there. recoil reduction is there, group tightening is there.
Thank you and we are glad to hear you enjoyed the video.
Scientic experiment and analysis. Great job!
Thank you
I would bet it’s rather based on the weight of the Muzzle device - it’s changing Harmonics on the Barrel. Just like a Tuner / ECTuner for instance.
LOVE this kind of analysis. Makes the scientist in my heart do a little dance.
Perfect, glad you enjoyed it and we will make sure to keep them coming
I had a silly idea that you guys might actually be interested to test. Hypothesis - a threaded tube like a suppressor but with no end cap, no baffles, just a tube (and thus no legal requirements) will not only send sound forward, reducing it for you but increasing it downrange, but if you start long and trim it back gradually, you can tune your barrel with it. Find what works and permanent attach and now you've got a no stamp gun with whatever barrel length you need. It sounds silly for centerfire, and it is. But for long range rimfire, something like this might just be incredible.
Reduced user sound experience, more accurate shooting, and no stamp? Someone should at least try it.
It's something to look into for sure, but there are already brake blast shields out there that effectively do that as well and usually that is the main goal channeling the blast away from the shooter. You can also check out forward compensators as well.
@@MDTTAC well I got in this position from a baffle strike that ejected the contents. Turns out the thing still shoots great and with subs I'd still call it hearing safe. Sends all the sound forward. Figured you lot might be able to replicate my result, heh.
@@zackl3094Witt machine has this. It’s called the SME
@@whothat4684 pretty cool. Not quite the same as a thread on can with the guts blown out but same basic idea.
I put my MDT 6.5 Creedmoor brake on my .223 awhile back using an adapter (I now sell online) and have seen no apparent difference. On a .223 recoil is negligible. Might be interesting seeing if it's measurable on something like a 6.5 CM or .308 using a .338 or 50 BMG brake. I'm sure there is a limit before the group and recoil return to what it was without a brake.
Another interesting episode.
Excellent video
Great vid!
Thank you
thanks so much!
This was a good video, but the thumbnail was misleading. Your video showed a small bullet going through a large brake, but your thumbnail was a large bullet going through a small brake with the text in the thumbnail saying the same!
I have a 308 brake that I threw on a rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. It's good to know that there isn't a huge difference in performance.
@michaelhill6451 I was thinking about doing the same thing but what are the actual benefits of putting a larger diameter brake on a smaller bore rifle? Or should I just stick to getting a 6.5mm brake instead.
@@Nick_M200 The only advantage is that you can use it on a wider variety of firearms. I have rifles in both 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor and got a 30 cal brake to use on both.
@@michaelhill6451 👍 🇦🇺cheers
Awesome video! Will the same apply to a suppressor tho? My guess is yes but not sure if the internals differ?
Would probably apply the same however, we have not tested it to be 100% sure
@@MDTTAC would be interesting to see🙏
I have a 5/8-24 tread with a 7mm rem mag. What brake would I purchase in this?
Was there a discernable difference in perceived blast standing off to the side of the rifle between 223 and 338?
No there was not
Nice testing rig but why no remote trigger activator?
It's something we are looking at right now
Yeah baby… yeah!!!
It actually is better because then you have pieces of shrapnel flying everywhere hich includes in the enemies direction so win-win
I'm building a crazy bullpup recce working directly with Colton of Reap Weaponries and Foxtrot Mike, and I need a different brake, because the FM stock is going to dust my LPVO heavily.
Have a recommendation for a .223 brake that is nil gas in the 11-1pm position, but also takes into consideration that I'm doing the bullpup thing, so I can't have too much horizontal and back?
Not a bad idea, if you fill out our product request form, that will go directly to our team to look into
What’s this fancy Garmin holder??
It is an Area 419 ARCA mount for the Garmin
What action is that on the 223 that you’re using?
Looks like an EM Precision Pulse (made by Curtis Customs).
Any chance to get the MDT Elite Muzzle Brake in a 1/2-20?
Probably not
It depends if the sniper is male or female.😊
I got 556
what if u make a reverse muzzle brake instead of compensating the recoil we make it have more for science
Like have the ports going the other way?
@@MDTTAC yup basically doing the opposite of what a muzzle should be doing
@@idk9478 We did this last year as an April Fools video haha, check it out! It's called NEW PRODUCT! MDT Tunable Ultimate Recoil Device
Please tell backfire tv to put me in their 600yd hunting challenge.
If I wanted to look at subtitles I would turn them on. Do not give into the TikTok trends, it’s distracting.
