I been a industrial maintenance tech for the last 10 years and wrench every day on industrial machinery doing setups on die press and brake press and work on harley davidsons in my free time and have and use a collection of quality tools but I will say that tekton sockets next to my snap-on sockets are extremely comparable and durable and there warranty policy seems outstanding for the price range what I did is incorporate tekton sockets with my snap-on rachets and it works for me !!! (If it ain't broken don't fix it)
The Icon inside ridge is to hold a nut and is closer to the opening. Both sockets have the same depth. The Icon stamps the size opposite of the Tekton because you store the socket upside down on a stand, not the clip on kind that you have. The opening of the Tekton has a steeper ridge opening compared to the Icon. The better the socket the less the ridge. The Icon's win in this comparison.
Yes, you can hold the bolt closer to the opening on the Icon, however as you loosen the bolt it will push your ratchet out along with the bolt. With the Tekton, the bolt would just continue to recede inside of the stocket and not push your wrench out. I think this is a design feature on Tektons part to help with working in tight spaces.
There is no issue with the icon broach. Thats how all the big names do it. It helps stop the nut from going all the way back in the socket. Both brands are solid.
Each has their advantages and disadvantages. As a professional mechanic I prefer the broaching of the icon but tekton is also a good brand. Only reason I prefer the icon style which is designed just like Snap-on, Mac and cornwell USA made sockets is the broaching. Gives better control when starting bolts and nuts in hard to reach places but it tight areas you’d need tekton or something similar. That’s why I have several different styles of sockets. Each have their own purpose!!
How about buy a $20 digital caliper and actually measure the fit of the socket vs just how pretty they are? That is what makes a socket better the actual fit to a bolt or nut. As for shallowness of a deep socket that is actually preferred as only the shank goes through the deepness of the socket there aren't any deep nuts or bolt heads. By the way the cheap Icons are very close in fit to a Snap On which today are Industry standard for fitment.
This broaching argument is so stupid. I've done this professionally for almost two decades. I don't see why anyone but a homeowner would find a shallow broach to be a selling point. Start the nut by hand or use a shallow socket on an extension to start it (rarely needed), problem solved. You lose functionality with a shallow broach. In my 20 years I've never wished for a shallow broach so a nut wouldn't "get stuck" in the socket. Get a pick and pull it out. To the contrary, it's routinely an issue of a fastener bottoming out in a socket and backing your tool up against something. Much less chance of that when nut can ride down the socket. Bottom line, full broach (like an old craftsman) can do every (useful) thing a shallow broach can do. A shallow broach can not do everything a deep broach can do.
I thought I was the only one thinking this. I find shallow broaching annoying. I never bought into the whole starting a fastener with the socket argument. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to use a deep broach in that manner if the need arose.
Long set? I bought the 1/2" drive deep 12 point *29* piece set. 10-38 no skips. Fills the socket drawer fast with those monster sized ones. Very happy with them. $90 on amazon with $40 off deal, so about $3.11 per socket. They're beautiful sockets, I couldn't be happier with them. If you forget right-tighty lefty loosey or run into a reverse thread fastener, you may break the smaller ones, but the bigger ones you'll snap your 1/2" drive anvil long before even thinking of busting those sockets. The quality of socket machining and tolerances is wonderful, and both the chroming and stamping are beautiful, just wish they'd protect them from each other better when shipping instead of all in one plastic bag. There are a few dings, but nothing horrible. If I'd have paid $5.00 a socket I'd be pleased as punch with these things.
@@BringItMuscleCars They are tekton brand. I have a 1/2" 6 point impact set that goes from 10 to 36 and only skips 31. I got the 12 point to be more precise and nimble to get to anything those bigger sockets can't get to due to their bulk so yeah I specifically wanted 12 point to also cover encountering 12 point fasteners. I found searching for a 12 point deep 1/2 metric set by a made in USA company used for an affordable price to be too much of a Unicorn, so I investigated Taiwanese made options. I thought it would be easy to verify these as made by KABO or INFAR, but both of those companies' catalog ends at 32mm, as does Blue Point. The only sockets I could find like them were Napa Carlyle, all other brands taper the drive end a lot more, these Tektons are left thick on the drive end like "Axle Nut" sockets. That and the price made me decide to give up on finding a used Proto set or similar. Now that I have them here I couldn't be happier with the decision. I'll never need to warranty any of these sockets, they're monstrous, and they have all the modern features like fluted drive end fluted broach, polished chrome (and no owners' marks) unlike used sets that were made when snap-on's patents of those features was still in force. Next to my Daytona "Snap-on clone from the same factory" jack, these are the nicest things I've gotten from overseas. I'd be happy having paid $135 for the set directly from Tekton. (they're sold out only amazon has them now).
Thanks for the detailed look at the tools. First, the ICON has a similar broaching to Snap-On, shallow to allow you to place the nut in the socket and feed it on to the stud. This annoyed me for a long time as different brands would broach differently. I no longer an too concerned as I have a pass through socket set. My second comment was in regard to the warranty. You stated that the ICON would be easier to use, but I disagree. You need to go to a HF and provide a proof of purchase (often just looked up in their system), but if there is no HF near you, it is far easier to just contact Tekton and have a replacement mailed to you and at your door in 2 days. I would also go with Tekton is this comparison, no question.
Agree 100%, my local harbor freight gives people shit about the phone number and warranty info while it’s much easier to email tekton, send a pic and wait 4 Days. My harbor freight often won’t have icon replacements either. I’d much rather go tekton after dealing with the harbor freight bs
Tekton is alot nicer imo. The inconsistency of icon is pretty nuts. Ive seen multiple sets that right out of the box were full of defects like your 12mm.
I hope that icon gets it figured out soon because it’s going to hurt the brand. Tekton definitely seems to be doing things right. They keep adding to their line too
I have a lot of icon stuff they do a great job. I have very few tekton tools but have warrantied my 3/8 rachet with Tekton. If I remember right I put the claim in on there website on a Friday night. They actually responded on that Saturday and had me a new one by the following Thursday. After this experience I've looked into a lot more of Tektons tools. I actually stumbled across your video due to I'm looking into Tektons 1/2 impact set vs icons
You might want to redo this video you had the two confused you were calling the icon tekton and visa Vera figure id let you know. I’m thinking about grabbing some icon
I have been using Tekton for about 3 years now. They are rock solid. Got turned on to them be a friend of mine that is a professional mechanic. They are tool trunk quality without the tool truck price. I can’t speak to the Icon, but I have had bad experiences with Harbor Freight tool in the past. It’s cool that they are upping their game in quality, but but given a choice between Tekton and icon, I would take Tekton every time.
After looking how shallow the Icons are you were still hesitant to pick Tekton. You said "I'd probably buy the Tekton". What's the point in buying deep well sockets when Icon is only as deep as a shallow socket?
Broach depth is different than socket depth. A shallow broach on a deep socket is actually the superior design because it lets you start a nut with the socket. A deep broach will cause the nut to fall down into the socket so you will have to start it by hand.

You can not buy individual icon so if you loose one it cannot be replaced !
taking a photo and uploading it to the Tekton website is much easier than going to a store for warranty.

I got some 1/4 icon stuff and they fit even tighter than my snap on flank drive sockets but not as tight as the flank drive plus

What brand where they? That’s a great deal. Did you get them because they were so cheap or did you want 12 point? Most people prefer the 6 point.
