Obivously they can't afford to mass produce the weapons like we're currently doing right now, due to the combines. So it makes sense how the weapons looks handicrafted. And I personally like it.
personally the weapon gives me a feeling like it used to be a manufactured break-action semi-auto shotty, but for some reason, had the entire rear end sawed off.
Slide was added, and the lower seems to be fabricated as well, but barrel, breech and mag tube looks like it was there from the start.
In the end shotgun looks like some weird alien assault rifle.
It kind of looks like a jerry-made SPAS-12 when you put the double fire heatshield on it.
Maybe it was a stolen combine prototype that would've been the ancestor of the Combine SPAS-12 that Gordon uses?
It sort of reminds me of a Saiga 12 .

I fully expected it. valve created the half life series to showcase technological advancement. with all of the experimentation in vr valve has been doing it was the obvious next step

The weapons designs are absolutely top notch in this game.
Makes it really feel like this is a rebellion making there own weapons to fight against the combine. And that’s what I love about valves story telling it makes you feel immersed

@@gooer2887 Literally half of the rebellions (and Gordon's) arsenal was guns hidden from the combine, or made out of junk or alien meat. They seem perfectly Half-Life themed.
I love how these weapons, and even Combine Technology feels so expertly put together, but so ramshackle at the same time. It's like everything is Macgayvered together to be as simple and efficient as is possible, but using unorthodox and complicated parts. Like taking a gear shifter and using it as a coffee grinder, or taking a solar panel and using it as a plate. It's like nobody really knows what their working with, but knows exactly what it does.

This maybe a combine SPAS 12 but re-vamped for Rebel usage, this was 5 years after the 7 hour war, which means the Rebel were an undercover insurgency, and that would make senses to how the double shot has the SPAS 12 cover
@@James-oj6ru It's 5 years until the events of half-life 2. Alyx was an infant in the events of half life 1, so it has probably been atleast 18 years, since she's 19 in half life Alyx.

Yggdrasil Burnes The timelines keep getting retconned. When HL2 was released all interviews, promotional material, the Prima Strategy Guide, and the behind the scenes book Raising the Bar stated that 10 years passed between HL1 and HL2. Then when the Orange Box came out the websites now stated _nearly 20 years_ which could mean anywhere from 15 to 19 years.
So if Alyx is 19 in HLA then she’s 24 by HL2. Which means if we are going by the current nearly 20 years time gap she was 5 to 9 years old during the Black Mesa Incident. If we were going by the original 10 year time gap she would be 14 years old during the Black Mesa Incident.
Gordon Freeman is stated to be 27 years old in the opening text of Half-Life 1. The G-Man put him in suspended animation or sent him to the future which means he never aged.

I really love that, since a 2-handed shotgun like the regular HL2 shotgun would prove disorienting in VR (due to not having anything actually physical for the second hand to hold onto), their solution was this delightful little shotgun-pistol. It's a wonderfully straight-forward solution.

I think it's more because a 2 handed weapon doesn't really work with the gameplay of alyx, because you're other hand is usually doing something, like throwing grenades or using syringes
They could've went with a sawed off shotgun but that simply isn't very original and went for a hand-crafted looks which I really adore
they could had kept the SPAS-12, the hook in the stock allows you to fire it one handed, and it also has a semi auto mode, so i'm really not sure why they replaced it

@@josealejandromontilla1106 I was wondering about that. I got a ton of pistol ammo since I used that the most. I was afraid if it didn't have that mechanic I'd run out of shells
@@josealejandromontilla1106 Lol. I'm maybe a third of the way through the game, and have barely touched the shotgun specifically because of how incredibly rare the ammo seems to be. Great mechanic for the kind of player who blasts away without care or reserve, but a bit of a double edged sword for the resource management minded players. xD
It sad that you can't have melee ,punching and kicking in this game if you have full body tracking.I wish valve would update it so that people can use whatever the fuck they want to kill an enemy,like you can just grab a metal rod and poke some headcrabs to death,or even just grab a brick and smash it to a combine's head.
Filthy Alan Animate Valve probably had difficulties doing that but perhaps they can add a small update adding that feature or someone can make a mod for it

@@thegamingvillager2392 With the surge of popularity of vr, they will surely be more given attention and maybe become even mainstream so meaning vr headsets will become more and more cheaper and I sure do hope that headsets like oculus quest becomes more viable for these kind of games so that everyone gets to play it.... So the next half life game is probably still going to be vr but hopefully vr is way more cheaper after that.
I agree, which is why I still prefer Boneworks from a tech perspective. Apparently they attempted to give Alyx a crowbar for melee combat, but they said they didn't like the melee combat because of the lack of proper haptic feedback so decided to scrap any melee fighting.

Love the Combine pulse rifle in HL2. The bouncing orb secondary that disintegrates anybody in the way is spectacular.
Combine has one of my personal favourite sci fi techs. The minimalistic design with a flawless working mechanism is awesome in it´s own right. The autoloader is a perfect example of that.
Man I wish they would let you unfold that underfolding wire stock lol.
You'd think they'd use a virtual stock system for it, would make a lot more sense for a shotgun

They found that pistol style works best in VR. Weapons that need to sit on the shoulder are clunky and break immersion.

@@Ichibuns Again with the excuses, stop it guys. H3VR has like the best guns, stocked and dual handed, foldable and adjustable, with every button functional, with all sorts of freedom for attachments, guns work just fine in VR, shame Valve doesn't realise that yet.
It's such a unique looking weapon, though I've been thinking about how it would realistically work
[Gun nerd babbling ahead]
So far I'm set thinking it uses a gas delayed blowback system like on a Steyr GB pistol or a Gustloff VG-1-5 rifle, it would make sense on why it has a slide in the first place, but I've been trying to make sense of the geometry of the magazine tube and breech assembly, maybe I'm missing something but it seems like the mag tube has a cartridge lifter integrated to it just under the last rear-most shell, still trying to figure it out.
When you rack the slide back you can see an up angled shell entering the chamber. My guess is there's a hidden lifter, like that on a conventional simi-auto/pump shotgun.
IRL, you could create a reciprocating action independent of the slide to move the whole upper receiver over the lifter when not firing. It would make the action, recoil operated similar to a Beretta 92F or Barrett M82/M107.
Just a guess though. Someone needs to make this thing.

i absolutely LOVE the design of the shotgun. its like, a sawn off pump action but you kept the front half of the barrel instead of the, y'know, actual shotgun, and just kinda threw together a working shotty out of the barrel and some spare parts.
That autoloader kinda reminds me of the Alof single-shot shotgun conversion, looks really neat
really love how you do some "animations" that usually on regular games, a nice touch of style

@@FalbereChan You can't load them sadly since it's only with the right hand when your weapon is un-equiped, it's just a little thing for scavenging.

@@tamasperci4168 just a heads up, left handed mode is the same thing as right handed mode but its swapped to your left hand instead, so instead of your left hand showing your health and ammo and resin, its your right hand instead
I saw the pistol video last night and I went to go find a video with the fully upgraded shotgun, nothing appeared but then you uploaded this one and I was like oh that's awesome mind as well watch this now.
Something to note: basically every weapon in Alyx is either a pistol or SMG of some kind.
Even the shotgun is designed to be as small and compact as possible and even has a similar operating system to a typical pistol.
And this makes perfect sense when you realize that in VR, you can't shoulder a rifle or hold onto a physical handguard to keep your ingame weapon steady, making long range accuracy impossible.
I've seen just so many people load the shotgun once i don't even know what to think.

From what i´ve seen the grenade is round. The yellow thing is actually just a casing that pops off when you press the primer.

Wasn't sure if you mentioned it in the video, but if you have the laser sight and grenade launcher then the laser site will change to a blue arc when you activate the grenade launcher. Super handy!
Fully upgraded, that thing is an absolute beast of a shotgun that should be in every shooter game

@@stampylongcock3919 I 100% agree, the entire point of Half-Life : Alyx is to show the possibilities of what can be done with VR while still making an enjoyable game. (As Kliksphilip said, Half-Life : Alyx is VR's Half-Life 1. Showing what can be done with the technology while still making an enjoyable game, but I'm even more excited for VR's equivalent of Half-Life 2) But porting Half-Life : Alyx to desktop PC would be missing the entire point of the game.

Got to say it’s far more interesting to watch the hologram screen adding the ads on to the weapon that the spinning upgrade animation.
They broke the shotgun laser sight with a recent update apparently. No longer projects a laser sight onto scenery, just draws the cone of laser light being emitted. Waste of 10 resin when I got the upgrade today (been playing very slowly through Alyx because it's too scary).

Many levels in the game deep and I just learned you can load more than 2 shells in the shotgun.. ugh.. lol. Thanks to these I now know I can load more shotgun shells and also how the handgun dual clip thing works (reason I was looking for these videos in the first place). Thank you so much!

I love this weapon so much. It's definitely the best one I've used in VR
I think Half Life: Alyx will be the only AAA vr game for a long while. This can only happen since Valve is swimming in money, and only concerned in making innovation regardless of profit (since they always have profit from Steam).
Facebook/Oculus also is swimming in money. Lone Echo, Lone Echo 2 are pretty close. They funded Asgard's Wrath and Stormland. Outside of that we have TWD: Saints and Sinners. It doesn't look as good as Alyx but it holds its own. This has been a good year for VR.

I just went online to look for a 2nd VR headset... my original Rift that I paid $350 for (18 months ago) is now going for 1100 new... You can order a Valve index for a thousand and have it (hopefully) in 2 months.

the shotgun in this game is such a sexy weapon, it really is a good looking gun, i love having it with the grenade launcher and laser sight

Grenade launcher is definitely the best investment in the game. It costs 40 resin, but it then enables you to use the Shotgun as another pocket for grenades, allowing you to carry 3 total.

I love the fact that fully upgraded the gun looks kinda like son of Spas 12. They didn't strafe far from Half Life DNA.

i just noticed it has the muzzle of a SPAS-12, a tribute to the other half life games!
One thing I love about this game's weapon design is that gun mechanisms look like gun mechanisms. Guns are filled with pieces that look nonsensical on their own, but when you see them fit together and how they function, their shape makes sense. Too many games these days (looking at you Mass Effect. Thanks for ruining scifi aesthetics for the last two decades) think gun design is " block and block fit together" so it's refreshing to see the designers in Alyx actually make the weapons make sense.

Auto loader is nice but honestly the most fun thing about the shotgun is loading it and cocking the barrel back.
This game taught me to always reload with 1 in the chamber, to keep from fumbling when panicked :P
Excellent video, just got the shotgun and thought it only took 3 shells and not 7, that was until I watched this vid. The pistol mod video was also really good. Decided to spend the resin on the shotgun lasersight and doubleshot. I take it I will get grenades later in the game, not worth buying the shotgun grenade launcher yet.
Out of all the three I think I'll mainly use this one because 1. Shotgun 2. Versatile

The laser sight is sort of weird in that it gets more useful if you're holding the gun wrong. If you're playing full immersion style and holding it like you're expecting some kickback, like you'd hold a real gun, it's not very useful because it's just gonna be in front of you the entire time. Unlike the other guns it doesn't help with pinpoint accuracy on far targets or anything. But if you're waving the gun around like a madman, and shooting in ways that would break your wrist in real life... well it's very useful! You can immediately see if the gun is actually pointing at what you THINK it's pointing at, and don't need to do silly things like AIMING before you pull the trigger.
It's interesting, I feel the laser sight is kinda pointless but knowing it has synergy with the grenade launcher actually gives it a really good use, might be interesting to do different runs with a build like that in mind?

Honestly, when I first got the shotgun, I had no idea there was a magazine capacity, so I treated it like a double barrel.
The sound of the lazer sight sounded stupid, I didnt realize it showed weapon spread like that. Wow
