Like so many kids, Dr. J is the athlete that inspired me to play basketball. Knew I would never ever be able to do what he did, but to run, and enjoy the game, and take joy in its beauty. Doc was the man!

Many ABA players were superior to NBA players: Julius, Moses, Bobby Jones, Artis Gilmore, Marvin '' Bad News'' Barnes, David Thompson, Rick Barry, Dan Issel, Connie Hawkins, Charlie Scott, Spencer Haywood, Swen Nater, Larry '' Mister K'' Kenon, Ron Boone, Louie Dampier, James Silas, Willie Wise, Mack Calvin, George Gervin, Zelmo Beaty, Roger Brown, Jimmy Jones, Mel Daniels, Super John Williamson, and Brian Taylor among others! That's all I can recollect at this time.

Definitely an ABA dunk. Saw a few of those when I watched a few Virginia Squires games when I lived in Newport News as a kid in the early 70's. It wasn’t like it is now with everyone dunking all the time. Back then one would see a few, and when you did, it was exciting. Of course the Dr. was the most exciting of all.

Doc wasn't the best player to ever play, but for me he was the most ENTERTAINING player I've ever watched, including Michael Jordan. It was like a séance waiting for Doc to perform some spectacular dunk over someone. That was his forte - dunking over people. He lived for that and perhaps was the best at that in history.

I grew up in San Fran so didn't get to see a lot of Dr. J on TV, but read about him in Sports Illustrated. He and 76ers came thru Golden State in 1983 and we went and watched the game. He scored like 35 points in only 15-20 minutes. He was insanely good and had 3 feet under his feet on jump shots. Nobody on the warriors could cover him. Had 5-6 dunks that looked like he was just floating. I'm shocked that he doesn't get way more publicity nowadays. His most productive years were wasted in the ABA. You should try watching some of his 1970s games - they're on youtube or people have private dvds for sale. I think he averaged 42 ppg in a couple ABA seasons. I have seen some absolute monster dunks that he had in ABA that are better than the Cowens and Michael Cooper dunks.

I remember that dunk vividly. There was another one where poor Dave Cowens waited under the basket- pumping himself to jump once...twice...and three times before Dr. J cruelly swooped in from on high and dunked over him. Remember that Julius has dunked over pretty much everybody, including people are taller than Cowens - Kareem, Walton, Artis Gilmore, etc. I wonder how he would've fared against Wilt (pretty sure Wilt would've blocked some of J's attempts; or maybe Shaq or Daryl Dawkins?). Did anyone EVER block Julius when he was in full flight? I've looked but never found the answer to that. If I could ask Doc one question, that would be it.

Yes, it happened by Dan Roundfield one night in the Omni in last minute of a tight game. Doc flew right down middle to slam and Roundfield utterly rejected him! On the ensuing Hawks play game winner Roundfield shot the game winner from @ 5' and Doc rejected it soundle to preserve a 1 or 2pt win.
A friend and I were big fans and watched on TBS I think. I've never seen the transaction replayed again. 😢

@@patrickhorne4348 I'd love to see the video on that if you have it! That's a question I had prepared for Doc if by some farfetched chance I ever ran into him. It would be interesting to see what he said.

He did it so many times, that people forget that Doc literally invented the modern offensive game. While being double and triple teamed his entire career.

Ah, yes, proof that there _was_ in fact a time in NBA history when defenders would actually *do their job.*
Yes, there actually _was_ an era when players still had the *spine* to defend the basket, and didn’t let a fear of embarrassment soften their game.
Let’s be clear about this: although Dave Cowens was a great player in his own right, it was almost a certainty that Doctor J was going to make him absolutely _eat_ that dunk-something Dave probably knew himself. Still, he put forth a concerted defensive effort, even knowing it would likely fail. He was man enough to compete fully for the sake of a *team win,* and unlike the comparatively soft, fake-tough-guys of today’s game, smart enough to know that it is more important than image.
Oh, wow, do I ever miss the days when this sport didn’t suck.

Just goes to show you its all about old vs new, and the contrast between what was, and what is, that gets everyone excited. That dunk would barely wake anyone up today let alone get them on their feet.

as an NBA fan that has Michael Jordan , bird, magic, ranking high above Dr j I have to say I recall Dr J in his twilight of his career being very fundamentally sound, he played defense , rebounded & played within his limits not forcing plays that he could no longer do. I guess I'm saying he was an all around player & gave great effort. The only time he shocked the hell out of me was by grabbing bird by the throat. Bird was shocked as well lol, other than that Dr j was a class act on the court.

  • @kellyjohnson9394

The most forgotten dunk and the one least seen except for local television, was the windmill dunk over Elvin Hayes against the Bullets while stationary in the lane. Doc was standing with the ball at least halfway between the free throw line and the front of the rim when this happened. It was against the Washington Bullets. I cannot find ANY tape of this game as at the time the Sixers away games were broadcast on channel 48 at the time. The extension and the violence of that dunk by even today’s standards was incomprehensible. It was during his first year as a Sixer. To this day, I haven’t seen another NBA player do what “The Doctor “ did in that game.
