    Rather than remove the dome light switches in the door jam, I installed a switch that interrupts the ground to those switches. This way they're still functional when the doors are installed.

    This is a great video, but I would like to warn anyone attempting to do this that if you go the route Admiral Offroad did by taking the hinges off to drill them out, you're going to be going through hell and back to line those doors back up so they look good, and seal good.
    Glen Morris at No Door XJ recommends you keep them on and use a long 3/8th drill bit to drill the holes out. I can testify that doing it this way will be a lot less hassle as I learned from my mistake. Ended up taking the hinges off because I had too short of a bit and had to get the doors back on the next morning for work because of the rain.
    TL;DR - Don't take the hinges off, use a long 3/8th drill bit to drill out the holes.
    Keep on Jeeping.

      U ever have issues with the door drooping or anything over time?

    • @Mirrorism
      @Mirrorism 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scooter0241 It's been about a year and a half since I modified my hinges for the door pins. I can't say that I've had any issues with drooping, besides what was already there. Doors line up good even after all the abuse. There will be play, but that's because you've got removable pins verses fixed ones.

    • @Swifty_702
      @Swifty_702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t even drill out the hinges or jam. Just cut the pin and find a pin at Home Depot or Lowe’s a 16th smaller. Cut down on project time and alignment issues.

    I finished a job changing the door hinge pins and bushings about 3 months ago. Since most of us don't have a plasma cutter, there's only one real plausible way to get the pin out that's pressed in; and you're going to need a dremel with the steel cutting wheel. It's the only thing small enough to fit in there (barely), you're gonna make an angled cut and you'll be able to bang em out after you split it. The job was a huge pain in the ass, especially if you don't have a garage you can put the jeep in overnight if you can't finish the job in one day.

    • @InfidelArmz556
      @InfidelArmz556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can also start with a small drill bit and drill a small hoke in the pin, then step up bit sizes to the pins split in half. Then carry on as usual and knock em out.

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Holt Olson It's not too bad. Setting the doors back up is easier with 2 people (one to hold the door and one to put the pins in place) but it can be done alone. I leave my plastic side panels unscrewed so i can get to the wiring plugs quicker. It takes about 10 minutes total to remove or reattach

    • @AdmiralOffRoad

      I haven't had any sagging in the years since installing these. I also have unibody stiffeners so I haven't noticed any additional flex in the body with the doors off. With the unibody stiffeners, I can open the doors with no problem with the jeep fully flexed

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +georgewastaken 2 options. Option 1: Get adopted by a dad with a plasma cutter. Option 2: cut the hinges with a cutoff wheel on a dremel tool. I started doing that on the passenger side, but it took a while.

    • @georgewastaken
      @georgewastaken 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man I really wish I could have seen how you did it with a dremel, the area is way too tight to fit anything. How big was the cutting wheel you used? Pic or clip if possible? I'm just trying to fix my hinges man.

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +georgewastaken You could try taking the door off the jeep first and then cutting them to get more room to work. Just make sure to mark how everything lines up first. I ran into the same problem with the dremel which is why i went with the plasma cutter. The directions that come with the pins say to use a dremel with a cutoff wheel, so I'd try to get the biggest wheel possible. If you still cant get to it, you could try using a drill with metal cutting bits. Start small and work up to bigger bits until you cut the pin in half by drilling a big enough hole in it. If you're super careful, you could try a small sawzall as well. let me know if any of these work.

      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pbahle I don't know off the top of my head. I'll find out and get back to you. If you are going to be removing the hatch, I would suggest adding a roll cage. The hatch adds quite a bit to the structural integrity of the unibody jeeps, adding a cage will help make up for that.

    Hey I have a 2000 Xj and I was doing this to mine but I didn't buy the pins I just got a 3/8 bolt to slide in it. So I went and drilled a 3/8 hole through my hinge and went to test it on the jeep and the bolt wouldn't go through the bushing but if I took the bushing out the hole was to big and the bolt would wobble around How did you get the pin through the bushing

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't use the bushing. There will be a little play between the pin and the hole which allows it to slide in and out easily. If you feel like there is too much play, you might have to go to the next size up bolt and drill a slightly bigger hole

      +Admiral Off-Road would it hurt anything with the play in it over time? Do you go off-road with your doors off?

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Garrard if there is play in it, your doors will sag a little bit when they are opened. They should still close fine, but you might have to close them a little harder than before. You can also adjust the hinges to compensate for the door sag. I do off-road without doors. I have unibody stiffeners on the jeep and there are no creaking sounds or evidence of body flex.

      No, this is for '97 and newer Cherokees. There are other videos for that type of hinge where you do not need to buy the extra pin. Check out "BleepinJeep" channel.

    The doors shouldn't be removed ...they are actually part of the body and provide strength to the body . This is also illegal in most states . I know you are going to say what about the Wrangler...it was designed to not have doors , that is why it has a wide lower door sill , roll bar , and full frame .

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had an issue in AZ and I have unibody stiffeners. I can flex the suspension and open and close the doors without issue

    • @toledojeeper2932
      @toledojeeper2932 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdmiralOffRoad ..that's not really what I mean..in a accident the doors help absorb energy and help in a rollover accident .the XJ will look like a crushed pop can after a accident without doors ...myself I would put in a rollbar and run a bar along the lower door sill if you plan on doing a lot of driving without doors .

    Just made my life a lot easier 👍🏻 ordering the pins soon. But as far as the wires go I was taking the panel off and un hooking the wires and tucking them under my floor mat every time I took the doors off. I didn't know there were connectors behind the plastic piece. I was litterly looking into getting doors from a earlier year just so I wouldn't have wires. But then I learned the hinges are different so it wouldn't work. Lol y'all go follow me on insta 98Jeep_chick 👍🏻
