What does a taunuki eat?
Diet: In the wild, these omnivores eat everything from invertebrates to vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, birds and rodents, as well as seeds, berries, fruit and carrion.
so he will eat bird villigars (Ex. Egbert)

So since Nook is an omnivore, he could basically have the same diet as us.
Do they also eat squirrels? I don’t know if those are counted as rodents. Omg the squirrel villagers, though!!! Oh no!
This is just my headcanon, but it makes me feel really warm and happy when I think about it. My theory is that, similar to how we get letters from our "Mom" in game, I like to imagine that it's our mom also sending us little gifts attached to the balloons out on the island. That's why it could be anything from bells, to miscellaneous items, clothing or even crafting supplies. It makes sense to me to think that she is concerned about how you're doing and secretly wants to help you out. The same way my real mother used to surprise me with new socks, or chocolates once in a while. It just makes me feel good to imagine it.
I think for the golden balloon specifically, well we all know Tom Nook can track your island progress via Nook Miles. It’s cataloged digitally. So maybe when you hit the 300 ballon mark he sends out a special gift for you.
As for selling fish, bugs and fossils. I assume he sold them to private collectors and fish markets. Basically uses your work to make more money.

I like to think that they just release all the bugs and fish back onto the island which is why there’s an unlimited supply of fish and bugs lol

I do have my own darker theory on where animals go when sold. More than likely their illegally sold to wildlife pet trade or the very least sold to pet stores as for fossils same idea different concept they could sell fossils to collectors for a much higher price than bought tom nook probably has some shady behind the scenes stuff and it wouldn’t surprise me if he legit just sells animals too the wildlife trade
Actually, at the end of the animal crossing movie, in the credits, celeste (sorry if I spelled that wrong) is pointing at a chalkboard, it has a space ship sending balloons to earth drawn on it (it would explain the Saturday alien broadcast on TVs at 3:33am in animal crossing), so yes, someone, and specifically aliens, are watching our every step

i believe it was confirmed at the end of the animal crossing movie (ik ik its a little stretchy) that aliens sent the ballons down. Why? idk. but i believe that's why that is, and also, i'd love to see a program where you can go to space, and colonize some parts. maybe interact with some villagers, and celeste can be more involved too :)

There is something that I don’t see people talking about is you can do something very illegal in animal crossing you can sell Timmy wild animals and that’s illegal since it’s not a breeder.
I gotz a topic to explain: why does Tom nook have a deserted island? Yea sure he has been in the series since the beginning but maybe he might have been saving that money to go to the moon and he’s doing the same thing in new horizons.
Next is: where do the NPC’s come from? Do they fly? Does Tom nook have them hostage? Do THEY live on the island?! WHO KNOWS? And there is another: other the heck are we?! We have a mom and we can’t send anything to her we can’t fly home cause Orville refuses to Isabelle won’t answer that question nether Timmy and Tommy the staff will not tell us where and WHERE ARE WEEEEEE! Ok another: where did the animals come from? Are they robots? Do come out of the bottom of a monster? Are they secretly plants that grew and mutated? Ok last one: why did Tom nook invite us here? I’d he tryna scam us outta money? Is he trying to abduct us cause he’s an alien (like Gulliver)? Is he a spy? Ok done sorry for the long comment!
My question is about the fact the ballons always goes from left to right. Even in sections of the westerly winds, things can go right to left, just less efficiently. But not the balloons.

I always had a head-cannon that Tom Nook sells the items he gets to the mainland, and the fruits, fish, and insects are either sold to food markets or the pet trade.
I actually have my own theory on what is upstairs in Nook's Cranny.
Way back when in the GameCube Animal Crossing, Tom Nook slept in the Nook's Cranny shop (see the evidence from the Japanese versions where you legit can get in after hours by banging on the door with your shovel). My guess is the upstairs is where Timmy and Tommy Nook sleep.

Nook Miles Rewards Program: allow me to introduce myself.
I think it would be pretty cool if in a future update Tom nook calls you and starts talking about a rocket, he tells you to go to the resident services and right in the middle is a huge rocket that says nook-X across the front, and all the villagers surrounding it. Tom nook takes over Isabelle’s morning news to announce that everyone is gonna be fucking going to space and the next day everyone gets in the rocket and we all fly to space and mars to make a new civilization

Actually, tom nook is quite kind.. He builds a whole house for you in one night, he lets you take forever to pay your debt, he gives you a nook-phone, since at first you have no bells he gives you the ability to use nook miles, lets you take forever for those, most likely adopted timmy and tommy, calls over his friend for your island and makes a whole museum, why does he get so much dirt?!

I think Tom just sells everything for a bit of a higher price. Fish is food, bugs may be bought by collectors, materials would probably still be used to craft something, etc.

my theory is that you in game dad is making all the balloon presents. in previous games, dad sent us a letter every once in a while, in new horizons,however, he doesn't. he has all that spare time to make these balloon gifts. maybe hes just giving us little gifts everyday to show his love and affection. it can't be tom nook, because hes literally always in resident services! and it can't be mom because she sends us letters....

With fish and bugs he probably sells them to Nate and Chip for 4x their sale value. When their sons Flick and CJ come to town they probably think they’re getting a bargain getting bugs and fish for only 1.5x the sale price.

Nook wouldn't be as wealthy as he is if he worked on the broken window fallacy of "buy item, place it outside to let it be refound, buy item again." That doesn't create wealth.
As for the supplies and items, he almost certainly refurbishes them and crafts with the supplies, almost certainly, as for the animals, there's a market for pets, we know critters are seen as pets, so he may run a pet store, although it is also possible he sells them to museums, laboratories, and other places such as zoos. Fossils also, just go to museums and labs and collectors. We aren't the only island in the world, lore wise, so he has other stores and other businesses out there. I do like the idea he donates some of the items he gets, he is a generous man, so the idea of him being the one behind the balloons would be awesome.
In the game cube version ballon presents could land in trees ,i always figured thats how we got the leafs in the trees

Theory I think nobody wonders about: Why are there SO MANY SEA BASSES (this will also explain how Orville is alive cause there is no food in the airport) When nobody is in the airport Orville sneaks into the ocean and eats every fish, but he think Sea Basses taste disgusting. Almost every fish is eaten except for the Sea Bass. He also likes pecking trees. That’s why your trees are gone. Not your friends who bring axes to your island.
