Hey guys, how's it going? Chris Connor here and welcome to another episode of filmmaker reacts for my channel. Seat back, relax and lets study the filmmaking techniques as well as talk about what visual effects can be pulled of within after effects! This week we are reacting and taking a look at FF XIV shadowbringers cinematic trailer!

It was one of the sickest burns I've ever seen in a video game, TBH. If she had done it in private it would be savage, but to do it in front of all the tribes leaders, so everyone can hear it happen, was utterly ruthless. To do it in front of his mortal enemy, Sadu, was pure devastion. The way she mocked him after was just sublime.
One of my favorite things about this trailer is that the WoL changes through his classes in the order of the previous cinematics
Even the 1.0 represented class. Also the reason for the 3rd eye on that enemy is because he's Garlean and they all have 3rd eyes.
@@mikigirl18 if you look into the 1.0 opening cinimatic, you can see who how much of it was used in shadow bringers.
each of the stand ins get used, and the roe at the bar in 1.0 is used in the crystarium.

I mean it takes so many tropes and just flips them. You think light is good? HAH! You think Angels are Lions (aslan) are good? HAH! You think Minfilia is dead? OHHH MAN! The only thing missing was finding Papalymo pigging out in Eulmore.
@@Eldritch_Panda31 The teaser trailer was released in 2018. Every teaser trailer before Endwalker was released in October the year before the release. The Full trailers where released in February-March of the launch year.
The banners represent the latest fight/war that happened right before Shadowbringers starts. The first bundle of flags is the Eorzean Alliance, and it represents all the factions on that side (which are the "good guys"), and then the gray flag by itself is the enemy, the Garleans.
The dude in the huge armor you face off against is the First Prince of the Garleans. He was the main opponent in Stormblood (the expansion right before Shadowbringers)
The gunblade guy is indeed in the game. He's an NPC that has been assisting you since the beginning of the game (as well as Mr. tarot cards and Ms. Ahri lookalike)
He wasn't using a gunblade at first, but he switched to that class for this Expansion, because said expansion added a playable class that is using a gunblade.
(And the rabbit girl is a Viera. And yes, same race as Fran from FF12

Yeah, you're right, it's the only MMO that focuses on the story and the journey to max level rather than trying to skip the leveling process like nearly every MMO does now. Play FFXIV if you want to enjoy a story of a single player game while being able to play with your friends.

Cause Shadowlands was a complete joke compared to Shadowbringers.
So funny that everyone's favorite zone in WoW's Expansion was basically ripped from FFXIV's Expansion too XD....
@@Nimoot i just mean in general, WoW definitely is one of them because of all the effort and hype that went in to the leveling revamp, you can hit max level from 10 by doing 2 or 3 zones, once again skipping the story. Many MMOs have been skipping the leveling process and only focus on end game like guild wars 2, tera, and of course WoW, that used to have some sort of journey to cap but have decided to just ignore it giving players enormous experience gains to completely ignore quests, dungeons and any involvement in the story of the game
@@Goneth Asmongold was freaking out that "You can buy levels???" .... When WoW has to hand-hold it's playerbase and GIVE them a free lvl boost to Immediately go into the expansion... Also so you can guilt your friends into getting the expansion "You can just level boost to me and catch up!" ...

@@Nimoot honestly though I think Asmon's feeling a bit trapped. He has been very vocal about Blizzard's shortcomings and I have a feeling he would have a great time with FFXIV. Yet he historically has lambasted FFXIV's "weebness" so much now that I don't think he will give FFXIV a fair chance, either because he's dead set against the idea of playing FFXIV itself or because he's afraid of losing his audience who are very against the idea. I mean heck I remember Asmon, in that same vid you are referring to, had to tell off his chat when they were getting really rowdy towards the FFXIV streamer he was reacting to.

It's what fame did to a human that wasn't ready to get that famous so quickly. He became corrupt, changed himself so negatively to the point where he's now just a puppet for his audience, and his eyebrows never stop moving ... It's creepy X_X.
This trailer gives me chills every single time. One of the best Cinematics out there.
Also, when that Eternal wind kicks in, NGL I get a teary eye.

The lyrics to this song still bring me chills even after 2 years. First hearing the music and seeing this trailer, I was like "wow this is pretty cool." But after playing through Shadowbringers, it hits just so much harder with the knowledge of the story.
I know it's been said so many times that it's almost a meme at this point, but FFXIV Shadowbringers is hands down one of the best FF stories in recent decades.
It's beautiful how the whole trailer foreshadows the story of the xpac, but even saying that it's not like you can really puzzle it together until you reach those moments, and then after it watching it and listening to the lyrics hits differently and makes so much sense.
I love how the trailer isn't all just symbolism and metaphors that doesn't mean much than present the xpac. Many are actual events and there's a specific part of the trailer I love cause, as you said, after playing the game and looking thinking more about it, there's an event in there we never see but is told to us that has huge impact for a specific character.
completely honestly. the two stories i love the most in ffxvi are Heavensward and Shadowbringers. shadowbringers really started off slow but god damn was it good. im really not sure which one i love the most
Best Final Fantasy story in a long time... And it was directed by a man who's first Final Fantasy game was this lol absolute legend

Hold off watching the Endwalker trailer, only the Teaser trailer is out at the moment, the full trailer will be out in May after the digital Fan festival

@@zandor508 he said in this video, he went to record a reaction and realized he'd already seen it. Of he uploaded a reaction now it wouldn't be genuine, which is why he did this one now.
Low key waiting for him to react to Endwalker now the official trailer is out.
There were three big things in this trailer that made all the players freak out.
1) "Master Matoya."
2) The Crystal Tower.
3) "Minphilia."
Keep these in mind as you play!
You forgot gun blade
Um... let's be honest, you can point to almost every scene in this trailer to find something fans freaked out about. Gunbreaker confirmation, dancer inclusion, the crystal tower, Viera, Minfilia, the scions, "warrior of darkness", who's this guy with the crystal hand, dafuq is this gremlin thing, fat miqo'te, this music, the Ghimlyt Dark... like, it's 7 minutes of sustained freak-outs.
Yeah, everything was friekin everyone out.

@@Helbereth Most all of the expansion cinematics work better as teasers for the current players than they do as trailers for new players unfamiliar with the story. While each one is cool in its own right, a lot of the impact is lost unless you're familiar with the story. In the Stormblood cinematic, it was the camera zooming out to the map and moving East, past Garlea to the north and finally revealing Othard. This was a big deal to players at the time. In the Shadowbringers cinematic, we have the Y'shtola hood reveal, the lingering camera on Minfilia, and the slow motion Viera shot, these are all highly impactful shots for players in the know, but otherwise unremarkable to anyone else. And while it's cool to watch Chris's reactions to all the various cinematics, the actual impact of these reveals is sadly missing.
He had the perfect reaction that we all had when we saw it first time, *points at screen* "G-gundblade!"
The gun blade character who you liked so much is named “Thancred” you saw a younger version of him in Flames of Truth, he was one of the people kneeling praying to help the old man fight Bahamut!

The musical transition in the crystal tower shot is my favourite bit
As a person that beat Final Fantasy III, I was stoked to hear the Crystal Tower theme too. That was also why I loved the Crystal Tower raid back in 2.0. It hadn't gotten monotonous yet and I could recognize each area from the game.
Eternal wind is my favorite song honestly. I love the transition to it.

Something pretty interesting about the song that's playing in the background is that it's essentially a breakdown of the story of Shadowbringers. If you haven't played Shadowbringers yet, it just sounds like a typical Final Fantasy song with lyrics that might not make sense. But once you've played through the campaign, you realize those lyrics are a summary of the game's events.
Also, heads-up, there is a trailer for Endwalker, but it's NOT the full version yet. The full version of the Endwalker trailer probably won't be out until May. The one we have now is a teaser that only reveals part of the new stuff coming to the game. If you want to react to the Endwalker trailer, I would wait until we get the full version later this year.

The creature that's like a gremlin is in fact a gremlin, they have a ability where they insult you and it gives you a debuff called "Misery" that can be removed if a party member uses a /comfort emote on you
That is oddly quite cute that people can dispel it with /comfort

As a huge fan of Shadowbringers, I would like to bring a couple of things to your attention that I think will completely change your view and amplify your appreciation of this trailer:
The overall theme of Shadowbringers covers the abstract belief of there being a "good" and an "evil" side. Shadowbringers challenges that time-honored tradition, and instead shows us two opposing sides, rather than a hero and a villain. One such quote in the game itself sums it up perfectly:
"We were blind to the truth once, so I tell you this, as one fool to another: Light, Dark it doesn't matter. What matters is how you choose to use them. We made our choice and you see what came of it so please... forge a different path, seize a better fate."
The importance of this is actually in the setting of this world: You are working to save a world from a Flood of Light. The balance of the world was tipped, and Light drowned out darkness. These saintly beings, known as Sin Eaters, turn people into grotesque purified nightmares, and the world itself is on the brink of annihilation, because of a mistake made in trying too hard to dispel Darkness. That is why the setting is in a bright, almost washed-out landscape -because this world does not have nighttime. The significance of the sky itself splitting at the end is due to the fact that this world has been trapped in that cloud of heavy oppressive daytime for over 100 years. Entire generations have lived and died without ever knowing what night is.
These both lend to the significance of the Warrior of Light contradicting traditional belief. Restoring Darkness, a power typically associated with evil, to a world drowning in Light, a power typically associated with good. And this entire mindset is conveyed throughout the entirety of Shadowbringers.
I've been a long time World of Warcraft player but when the dumpster fire that was BFA was current and then I saw this Shadowbringers trailer, that got me interested in playing 14. And I've been playing for a couple years now.
As someone who also made an analysis of this trailer, it's a pleasure to see the true professionals like Chris to show their knowledge, it was very inspiring and instructive to watch this video. Brillant as usual 👍
Your initial reaction to this trailer accurately reflects the community's reaction when they first saw it.
The next expansion cinematic teaser has come out, which you could react to, or wait for the full trailer (probably early may), and react with the rest of the community!
P.S. Fran is from FFXII and is the bunny you were thinking of. The bunny species (Viera) are one of the new playable races that was introduced in this expansion.
The Shadowbringers Cinematic is just 10/10. Extremely nice!

The bunny girl from FFXII is Fran. She's also in FFXIV. In fact, the level 70 alliance raids are all about Ivalice with many returning characters from FFXII
Also the dancer in the trailer is a Viera as well (well technically the First Shard version of a Viera but they're essentially the same as the Source (aka the setting prior to shadowbringers) apart from the name) though I'm not sure if that skin tone is available for Rava Viera (the race Fran belongs to).
Best story ever told in MMORPG history. Even voted as the best Final Fantasy by the fans. Some even goes as far as claiming it's one of the best RPG in general. The story makes you laugh, worry, cry, hype, and everything else in between. Personally for me, I've thought the story was written by the Gods. It is that good.
iv been playing video games since 1985....chrono trigger and final fantsy 3(6) were my fav but this.............it is the best rpg in history best told story i haver never seen, hands down it shits on every game i have played and i have played tons of games

The best trailer and expansion by far!
Spoilers for FF14 Shadowbringers, but not much because I don't want to explain too much.
The dude in the tower is the one who is speaking for the trailer, because he is trying to reach the Warrior of Light to prevent a tragedy from happening. The goal of ShB is basically to bring back the darkness, to return balance to his world - hence why you are becoming the Warrior of Darkness in this expansion (rather than the Warrior of Light).
The class for this expansion is the Dark Knight - cause. Darkness. You know. The writer for the Dark Knight job quests also was on the team for this expansion, so it's actually one of the best expansions to date, highly loved by everyone. I've heard very few complaints, aside from minor problems.
The biggest shame for the trailer is that you don't see the main villain for Shadowbringers, who is a big favourite for a lot of fans too. He's a very charismatic villain :')

@Ryteous From what I understand, what we see at the start of the trailer is what would have happened had the Crystal Exarch not interferred and summoned the WoL. We would have beaten Zenos and his defeat (again) would lead directly into the Garleans unleashing the Black Rose and by extension brought about the 8th Umbral Calamity. It is a brief look into the divergence point for the timeline that we are trying to prevent.
@@TheTriforceDragon You mean elidibus, during that time zenos's corpse was being used by elidibus, he didnt get his body back until like end of shadowbringers or near it.
@@yumamaga6803 I know, but the Garleans are not aware of this fact. From their perspective Zenos would have made a miracoulous recovery, only to be defeated again.
@@TheTriforceDragon Either way, I still find it freaking hilarious how zenos, while in a normal imperial soldiers body, made elidibus yeet the hell out of there even though he had zenos's body. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that.
Now they have a new trailer Endwalker, but I'd wait till the full release of the trailer. SE likes to tease and release partial trailers only showing the full trailer when the expansion is close to dropping.
They would have released the full trailer instead of the teaser trailer in a perfect world (and Endwalker would be released in June-July).
But because COVID screwed up their production schedules, they're so far behind (roughly 3-4 months) that they haven't caught the story quests up enough for the full Endwalker trailer to get released (without massive spoilers)

@@bezarregaming jeah because of the different Fanfests for JP,NA and EU. Usually on every Fanfest you get a different Teaser with everytime a little bit of new Stuff to explore. And on the Last Fanfest (usually the EU one) you get the full Trailer. Its really cool to satisfy everyone on the entire World and everyone get some new Information. Its way cooler than just showing the Full Trailer on every Fanfest.
That reaction when you hear "Warrior of Darkness" is exactly what the entire community felt. The whole shadowbringers really shatter the stereotype of light = good, dark = bad.
Kinda funny how for someone who didnt play the game, you really got most of the points right just by watching. "What is she? Infuse by the light or something", you literally caught on real fast
Also the bunny race is a canon race within the lore, vieras were first introduce in the "Ivalice" series, which is basically a neighboring continent in FFXIV and also the place that FF12 took place in, so it's not surprise to see them wandering around now.
I hope he does the Endwalker trailer soon.

Best FFXIV trailer to date! And the music that sounds in the scenes with the Viera and the Crystal Tower is a new version of "Eternal Wind" from FFIII, very beautiful!
Chris, I'm so happy you acknowledged when we said it *is* story focused. Dude, you really should give this game a shot. This trailer stands on it's own and is really cool, but it means SO. MUCH. MORE. when you come at it after getting a character through the lv.70 story.
Chris, you should check out Alex Moukala Music and his videos reacting to the music in these trailers. The FFXIV composer Sokken recently spoke with him on a video interview after he and Husky did their version of the next expansion's boss music based on the teaser trailer and Sokken noted how insightful Alex's analysis is and that he actually catches a lot of subtle things Sokken was intending to convey like the slight key change at the end of this conveying hope at the end.
All the characters are the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization you're a part of and they have been growing alongside you and part of your story since the first expansion, A Realm Reborn. They've become larger and larger importance alongside you rather than sort of side characters to guide you along. The one with the gunblade is Thancred. He's gone from a rogue to a gunbreaker.
Also, the bunny girl, the viera, Fran is the one from XII. She is also IN FFXIV! Not just one of her species, but her exact outfit and the name is Fran. It's not the same Fran from XII, but it's the same name/look and it's during the "Ivalice" raids, which is the world of Final Fantasy Tactics & XII, but in FFXIV it's a country.
And as others have said, wait til May for the full Endwalker trailer. They release half as the teaser and we get the full trailer later at Fan Fest (which is digital in May this year).

Next should be EndWalker but once it's complete right now it's just a teaser, so wait for it, probably in May we will see the full cinematic.
True, I think it's best to see it when the full cinematics is out, bcs they only show like half of what we are going to see - prolly some stuffs hidden behind the next patch contents which might spoiler players who are still waiting for the next patch to conclude the expansion. But anyways, I'm looking forward to more of this!
If you want some giggles, look up the live action commercial for this same expansion that has Tom Holland and Hannibal Bruess in it.
If you ever play the Shadowbringers expansion, I'd like for you to know that you can use Thancred (Gunblade guy) as your tank in dungeons. Or you can play the class yourself!
When the hooded guy with crystal hand says "Calamity even greater than 7th umbral calamity", the 7th umbral calamity is the formal name of when dragon Bahamut wrought great amounts of destruction in Flames of Truth cinematic.
I love how he instantly starts fawning over yshtola. She is best girl after all.
The look on your face when Thancred did his full-fist reload is the same reaction I had. I laughed because I understood.
Fun Fact: The Dark Knight (the class the WoL becomes at the end to defeat the angel) is based on a combo of Guts from Berserk and the main character from Dark Souls! When the author/creator for Berserk passed a couple months back, everyone who had the class were lining the streets in the major cities in their Dark Knight gear and standing by their campfires to pay him tribute since his work was a heavy influence for the class!!

I played Shadowbringers this past summer and it lives in my head rent-free. It was also when I really connected with the Scions and saw them as my close comrades and friends. And Emet-Selch, wow, what a character! I loved Endwalker A LOT, but Shadowbringers is my Roman Empire. I think about it all the time.

I absolutely LOVE this game (been playing since 1.0); even if I take breaks in between, I always gravitate back to it. The cinematics always get me hyped up especially with the addition of Soken's musical composition. (Endwalker, anyone?) I still remember watching reactions to this as it was coming out. So many emotions since a lot of it gave some reassurance after what happened with story until that point. Oof, still getting goosebumps! X3
I am to excited for this. Edited because im still excited after watching and that ending still gives me chills to this day.
Fun fact: In this Add On the darkness isn't something bad. It's quite the opposite because the story brings you into another world flooded with light.
So the whole "light = good, dark = bad" ist swapped :)
an amazing thing about this trailer is it all happens between levels 70 and 71. there it barely scratches what Shadowbringers actually has in store.
and yeah FFXIV pays homage to all the Final Fantasy's of the past, even the bunnygirl "viera" race from 12, the Taru form 11, the Crystal tower from 3, music remixes from various titles, questlines that directly refer to other games while still being part of 14's actual world in a way that makes perfect sense. it is very well done.

Endwalker full trailer is now live, I would love to see hear your thought on it. It definitely has me hyped for Endwalker.
Man it's crazy seeing how much is in here not just for fans of the game, but fans of final fantasy as a whole, to the point that he had a decent amount of context for the trailer despite never having played 14. The banners aren't exactly symbolizing all of the previous fights, it's the two armies that are fighting in the trailer, the alliance of eorzea, with all the in game factions on the left, and garlemalde, the invading army on the right. Something really cool about the trailer is that the area at the very beginning is actually a dungeon in game; the Ghimlyt Dark, which is the front line of the war.
Fun Fact: It's called the Ghimlyt Dark because there's so much smoke and ash in the sky that it blocks out the sun, it's always just as dark as depicted in the trailer.
Wow, It never occurred to me but he's totally right, WoL straight up pulled an Excalibur Morgan at the end of the trailer didn't he?

The subtle point is that the music says "You are the light" as it zooms on her. And obviously context of the story is kinda needed here a bit.
Even after all this time this trailer still gives chills. The narrative it tells is flawless

Also the switching of the gear is a nice nod towards the job system that allows you to freely change you class whenever you want (you can basicaly level up all classes with one charackter)

I was waiting for this video for like months, since I like a lot your reactions and play a lot FF14 and I just happened to walked in randomly 7s after this was posted
Edit now that I've watched it , some explanations. Warning, the following contains massives spoilers of FF14 expansions.
The beginning of the cinematic is actually from the end of last expansion, Stormblood, which basically was a war between all the kingdoms where you've been before with the Garlean Empire. The guy with an half-broken mask is Zenos, the main antagonist of the Stormblood expansion.
Also, the thing you asked "what is that" at 14m is probably a Garlean flying ship, you can see a similar one in The Flames Of Truth
Through Stormblood, your teammates actually fall into coma one after another because their souls are taken to another world by someone without you really knowing why.
You learn afterward that someone over there, the Crystal Exarch (the dude with a crystal hand in the cinematic) tried to transport you to his world because it's about to be destroyed and need a hero to save it.
We learn in Heavensward that this world was about to be destroyed and one of ours teammates, Minfilia, sacrifice herself (in a way that's difficult to explain) to stop their world from being destroyed.
And now, this guy try to summon you but fails and summons your comrades by mistakes.
Those comrades are the one we see in the cinematic. There's Urianger, with the cards, Y'shtola, the catgirl in black with a mage staff, Thancred with the gunblade, and two others not shown in this cinematic, Alphinaud and Alisaie (you can see them in the Endwalker cinematic if you ever watch it).
Also, the little girl with blond hair and shiny blue eyes is called "Minfilia" in the cinematic, so as players, we're supposed to be confused because Minfilia was an adult and is supposed to be somewhat dead (the hype train was real at this moment, if you check out the fanfest reactions, everyone just kinda starts screaming when they mentionned Minfilia the first time)
So you go to this another world, called "The First" (cause there is 13 worlds in FF14) which is on the verge to collapse. We learn that every element (water, fire, light, dark, ...) need to be in balance and if one element overflow, it can destroy the world. We already knew the 13th world was destroyed by darkness and became "the Void" and breed countless monster, but we just assumed it was "normal" because darkness is usually kinda evil, but it can happens with every elements, which is surprising.
Even more surprising, the First is on the verge of being destroyed by the element of .... Light, which has created countless "light monsters" just like the angel the hero fought in the cinematic, but most of them are not as beautiful as this one and look like hell demons but white. Also, most of them act as zombies, attack humans and transforms them into light monsters as well.
So to compensate the overflow of Light, the people there seeks an hero that, in constrast of the Warrior of Light in our world, is the Warrior of Darkness to fight back the light.
That's basically the context of this cinematic ! There is a lot, A LOT of others things to say about this expansion, but i'm restricting myself to what's shown here.
Now, some facts about this cinematic and the FF14 cinematics in general, they are usually divided in 3-parts, and revealed at the Final Fantasy fanfest, most of the time in october, january and may. The cinematic at that time was just the beginning and the fight of the warrior of light with the angel. When the second part was released, they added the forest in fire part, and the apparition of Thancred with the gunblade to tease the gunblade as the new weapon for the Gunbreaker, a new class of the expansion.
And last version is the one you saw, with the real and definitive OST (which is also the "final boss" theme of the expansion btw) and added the parts with the 2 new cities, and the dancer class (the bunny girl).
So if you ever check out the Endwalker cinematic, wait for a bit as the one we have now is just the first version, not the complete one

What's impressive of this trailer is that it changes meaning depending on how much you know of the story. Within background knowledge you can of course enjoy it. Cinematographically speaking it's amazing. But if you know a little of the characters you get hyped for seeing them. Particularly Minfilia. But if you are caught up on the story up to that point then you know what happened to them and wonder how things got to that point. But then the whole story reveals itself once you have finished the story and you can truly appreciate all the nods and details that are in this.
I will wait until the endwalker comes , i hope he is fired up .

The transition from after the samurai showdown to when he's wandering is because he got yanked to another world and his memory has got a bit scrambled. And all the other characters you see were also yanked into this other world before him so it's showing a bit of what they were doing there before the warrior of light arrived. Essentially this whole trailer is teasers and out of context action that you will learn about in the game eventually. The trailer is also used to confirm things people are hoping for like they're being gunblades now and the dancer class. Which is a very cool way to announce new features by showing them in the trailer instead of some corporate drone standing on a stage going _'and we're introducing gun breaker',_ like how Blizzard does it. 😆

The Elf with the cards is Urianger Augurelt, an Archon of the Circle of Knowing from the northern land of Sharlayan. Urianger often speaks in poetry and riddles. He is well-versed in the prophecy pointing to the Seventh Umbral Era, and recites a verse at nearly every encounter. Though his appearance and mannerisms are intimidating, he is a virtuous character. Although he often tries to hide it behind a serious facade, he is close to fellow Scion Moenbryda, having known her since childhood. Though secretive, Urianger is loyal to his fellow Scions and his teacher, Louisoix Leveilleur. Louisoix was the old man in the first cinematic that teleports everyone away, and then fights Bahamut.
